Hello everyone!

Well, I had a scare of sorts last week. Started with a horrible appointment with a doctor in my group (my OB was on an emergency), where, although everything checked out fine, I was told: 1) I will probably have preterm labor and be hospitalized at 23-24 weeks, 2) I will never make it to more than 34 weeks, which "is okay, since we have an excellent NICU" 3) I was wanting too many tests and interventions, and "patients are not capable of interpreting the data" (by the way, I am an epidemiologist) and 4) to stop reading about pregnancy and just be happy, because "ignorant patients are happy patients" (name ONE IVF patient who can just relax and not question things!). My regular doctor is the exact opposite of this guy.

Anyway, I left a little upset, and about 2 hours later started feeling weird feelings like my cervix was tightening and releasing. Then I felt like I needed to urinate, but that did not relieve the feeling, and it seemed to be getting worse. I paged the doctor and was told to take a huge dose of magnesium and an antibiotic (Keflex) in case it was an infection, and come in the next day. I went in, everything checked out fine, and I have a long cervix (3.9 cm). However, the doc and I made the decision to put in a cerclage, as my mom had incompetent cervix, and I am pregnant with twins. I am going in on Tuesday for this. The antibiotics are making me extremely ill, which I was just getting over. All a little frustrating, but I would rather take any precaution, no matter how difficult, than even a tiny risk.

Anyway, sorry to ramble. It feels good to share, though. I hope you are all doing well. Think I'll go lie down now...

Hello everyone

Welcome to the 2nd trimester Susie. Hope you are refreshed and relaxed after your holidays. Amazing that you can already feel the baby at this stage, wow! Im jealous!!

Julie - What an awful Doctor. How dare he talk to you like that?!! As well as scaring you about preterm labour and been hospitalised for weeks, what does he think you are? Incapable of interpreting data??!! Ignorant patients are happy patients?? Yeah, until something goes wrong because they havent got a clue!! Im not surprised you were upset. Sounds like he needs a lesson in interpersonal skills!! Hope you feel better soon, when the antibiotics have done their job and you can finish taking them! Hope everything goes well with the cerclage and hope you dont have to see that Doctor again!
Take care

Hello everyone! Welcome to the 2nd trimester Susie, glad you have joined us. I can't believe you can already feel your baby. I thought that wouldn't happen until around 20 weeks. How exciting for you.

Julie:
I'm so sorry to hear about your terrible experience. I hope you are feeling better. What a horrible doctor. I would probably let my doctor know what he said and hope you never have to see him again. Besides can they really tell at this point that you will have to be hospitalized with pre-term labor?? Good luck tomorrow with the cerclage. Do they do it at the doctor's office or the hospital?

I go this Friday for my next OB appointment which will be 14 weeks. I can't believe I will be 14 weeks on Friday. When is everyone going to start finding out what they are having? I plan to find out at 18 weeks. I can't wait.

Kim and Mil- thank you for your outrage on my behalf! I am certainly feeling better about the whole thing, and chalk it up to youth and insecurity on the doc's part. Still, that is the last time I'm dealing with him. Little did he know that he sparked an international scandal.

Mil- I am also anxious to find out who is in there. I have heard different things about when gender determination can be done. Is it 18 weeks? If so, I am going to be standing at the clinic at 18 weeks, 5 minutes.

A cute thing- we got another ultrasound, and there was a perfect picture of the bottom of one of the twins' feet. I was looking at it at home, then glanced at my husband's foot- it was the EXACT same- he has long skinny feet (size 14) and the second toe is longer than the big toe. At least now I know there wasn't a mix-up in the lab!

Hope you are all feeling well and enjoying this part of the pregnancy.

Julie - Glad you're feeling better now and more relaxed, the last thing any of us girls need is worry! We've had enough of that already!
Mil - I can only feel bubs move so early coz its my 2nd baby and I have very few tummy muscles left, apparently the stronger your tummy muscles the later youll feel bubs move.
In the UK we can only find out the sex at 20 weeks and then only if its hospital policy to tell you! Last time I had to find out coz I so wanted a girl, coz I thought if I'm only gonna have one child then I want a girl, but this time I dont mind. I want a girl coz my daughter Abby wants a sister, and a boy coz DH doesnt want a house full of women! So basically this time I dont mind, and I have still got 5 frosties so you never know!
Has anyone chose names yet? We have Zak for a boy and Elli for a girl. We have to have short names as our surname is 19 letters long!
I havent bought anything yet, but I think my mum has virtually bought Mothercare! Its gonna be her 4th grandchild but shes still gaga!
Anyway have fun all

Julie:
Glad to hear you are feeling better. I bet it is really cool to see an ultrasound now. I see other people also worry there may have been a mix up in the lab. I joke about that all the time, but what if it really happened???? :?

I have not had an ultrasound since 10 weeks and probably wont' have another one until we find out. In the US you can find out, depending on your doctor, anytime after 17 weeks. They say it is best to wait until at least 18 weeks though. I go to the doctor on Friday and that is when I plan to tell my OB that I want it done at 18 weeks so it can get scheduled at the hospital.

Susie:
I was just talking to DH this am about you being able to feel the baby. This is our first so I'm guessing I won't be able to feel the baby for a while. But I am starting to show.

I had a rude co-workers yesterday tell me she couldn't believe I was already showing after only 3 1/2 months and that maybe I should check with my doctor to make sure I wasn't having twins.... Maybe I'm just sensitive, but I felt as thought it was very RUDE! That is really the first time I feel like someone said something rude so maybe it was just my mood yesterday??? :?

Since this will probably be our only child I don't really care but I would probably prefer a boy. I don’t' know why. Everyone thinks I am having a boy but I just feel like it is a girl. Again, don't know why. We have picked out names.... Boy - Blake Carter and Girl - Lauren, we haven't decided on a middle name yet but our choices are Elisabeth, Nicole or Alexis. It's really hard. We have always had our boy name but have always struggled with the girl name. We just decided this weekend it would be Lauren. It was Peyton and I changed my mind.
Have a nice day ladies!!!

Hi everyone

Isnt it exciting now to be able to discuss nice things like names and not worries all the time like in the 1st trimester. (Obviously still worry, but maybe not quite as much). I want to know what im having, but DH doesnt at the moment. He says why do we have to know when our nursery is going to be a neutral colour anyway? I want to know because im convinced it's a girl and although I wont be disappointed if it is a boy, im worried I wont bond the same because im expecting a girl. To be honest before the IVF treatment for some reason I would have prefered a boy, maybe because DH would, i dont know.
Ill tell you the reason im convinced its a girl.....about a month before I started IVF treatment I was talking to a friend who had recently been speaking to a mutual friend of ours. Now I hadnt spoken to this friend for a while. She asked how I was (She didnt know about the IVF). When our friend told her about me starting IVF, she went quiet and then said her clairvoyant (Who she sees fairly regularly and is apparently fairly accurate) said that someone she knew would be having IVF and would have a girl......spooky or what? I havent been able to get it out of my mind since, so thats why. DH is also convinced its a girl anyway.
So we will see if this comes true or not!!
Take care everyone

So girls, I guess I am officially in the 2nd trimester. I cannot tell you how relieved I am feeling to get through the initial 12 weeks. Still worries, but I am going to relax a bit more now. Feeling good at the moment. I do have some questions.

Is anyone feeling itchy in the stomach area?

Also, is anyone still feeling a slight pull on the inside as if things are still stretching out?

This is my first so I think things are adjusting themselves a bit. In addition, my hips are starting to widen. Oh, the wonders of pregnancy have begun. . .

Mil- now I am outraged! That woman was rude. That is the weird thing with IVF pregnancies- it is like the stimulation took us past several weeks of not showing into pregnancy world, isn't it? I'm sure you look great- have fun with the bump!

Sher8:
Welcome to the 2nd trimester. :D So glad you joined us! I do have an itchy stomach sometimes, especially if I wear clothes all day that are around my stomach. I haven't really had any stretching feelings. I have plenty of other feelings though. My biggest thing now is the headaches. :x I was getting them really bad and then last week I didn't have hardly any. Then yesterday, I had one from the time I woke up till I went to bed. It was awful! Welcome again.

Julie:
Yes that woman was rude. :x I thought maybe I was just being over sensitive. It got even better, the next day I was with a group of people and the same woman happen to be there and a friend of mine said Oh your bump is so cute and the RUDE woman turned around and said Yeah, can you believe she is ONLY 3 months. I corrected her and said I was 3 1/2 months but it made me so mad. :? My boss said I shouldn't let it bother me because she is from another culture and probably doesn't know any different.

I went to the doctor on Friday and got to hear the baby's heartbeat. :D :D It was really funny, the doctor warned me that it might be hard to find the heartbeat and she would tell me when it was the babies and not my heartbeat. She put the Doppler on my stomach and there it was. She didn't even have to move it. My OB jokingly said it must be a girl, since the heartbeat was so easy to find. I also have to go see a Cardiologist since my heart has been racing. I also scheduled my anatomy scan on August 19th to see the sex of the baby. I CAN'T WAIT!!!!

Hi everyone

Well im getting organised. Booking my antenatal classes in advance (Both NCT and NHS). My 20 wk scan is on the 2nd September. (Seems ages away, but I surpose we are nearly in August!) Ive also decided I need to start doing some sort of exercise, otherwise with my appetite I will end up the size of a house! Im thinking of trying Aqua aerobics when I can get round to it. The midwife has said if I want the triple test I need to have it this week, although she advises against it because I definatly dont want an amnio. The thought of losing the baby now is so scary, I dont think I could consider it. The midwife said because 1 in 250 and more is considered high risk (Which as she said, even 1 in 100 sounds pretty good odds!) I will only worry if they come back in the high risk category. Ive decided not to take it and what will be will be. Do you girls not in the UK have the same tests?

Sher - Welcome to the 2nd Trimester! I certainly get odd (sharp) pains sometimes as well as still occasional AF type pains. Im presuming these are due to stretching of some sort.

Mil - It is so nice to have a bump isnt it? I worry if its big enough or not! Isnt it amazing how rude some people can be? They surely dont realise sometimes what they are saying. I certainly hope this is the case most of the time and they surely cant mean to be so rude!!
Fantastic you got to hear your baby's heartbeat. Must make it all the more real! DH might be coming round to my way of thinking so we can find out the baby's sex at the scan!

Susie - Thinking of you and hope the specialist can give you some answers on wednesday.

Take care everyone

DH and I decided not to find out the sex of the baby. I wanted it to be a surprise I guess.

Mil - I have a bump and I am only 13 weeks. I am proud of my little bump that we worked so hard to get! If you think of it that way, you can have the last laugh.

I have been using Palmer's cocoa butter to avoid stretch marks and doing prenatal yoga with my video tape. Maybe I read too much.

Baby names. . .well for a girl it is Sienna, Ava or Rachel and a boy possibly Alexander or Tyler.

Hope everyone is doing well. I have an OB appt. this Thursday. I hope to hear the heartbeat at this visit.

Well I guess you all know how my nuchal went!
To be honest I wish I'd never had it. My blood say no downs or anything, but the fluid says maybe a heart problem or something. If I hadn't had the nuchal I'd never know, I'm just hoping as its only 0.3mm out that shes made a mistake as she scanned for ages before she finally got a picture coz bubs just wouldnt keep still.
I to am getting a large bump but am trying at the mo to hide it. I'm off work at the mo but hopefully back on Thursday if all goes well tomorrow.
Hope youre all OK

Hi Susie

I have been reading an NCT book about pregnancy over the years, which had other women's stories in it. One woman had a Nuchal scan and they said it was above average for the thickness and that there might be a problem. It also took a while for them to get a correct picture. Some weeks later she had an amniocentisis and the technician also scanned and took other measurements and said everything looked fine. She went on to have a healthy baby. I so hope that everything is ok and you can enjoy your pregnancy. If the baby was moving around so much, it surely is likely they couldnt get an accurate measurement anyway.
Take care

Hi Ladies

Post by Christine B »

It's nice to hear how far everyone is progressing. I am a little more than 21 weeks pregnant with my first. Definitely showing with no weight gain yet. Had Level 2 Ultrasound and AFP test and everything looks good. I've had 3 miscarriages multiple failed IUI's and 1 IVF so this is definitely a blessing. Anyone living in the US can rent a Fetal Doppler at Heatbeats at Home.com for @ $25.00 a month. Just a reassurance to hear the heartbeat but not to track it which might make you nervous. Good Luck to all.
