This is my first post over here and it feels great!!!
I have a question about c-sections, I didn't want to post it on the Pregnant after treatment board because other people will be having sections and I don't want to worry them unecesary.
I had my son Joshua on 10th July by c-section and my scar is still not healed properly, one side is taking longer than usual and the rest is very moist and smelly. I was prescribed steroid and antibiotic cream by my GP but the midwife said not to use it because it will lock grease and moisture into the wound and delay healing even longer. As anybody else experienced a similar problem afterwards?
Apart from this and the associated pain I love being a parent. Joshua is so great and his birth was the defining moment of my life, nothing will ever top it. I look at him and still can't believe he is here. John (hubby) said 'look at Joshua' last night and it took a good few seconds of thinking 'Who's Joshua' before I realised he is my boy. John said he has forgotten a few times too and what a great feeling it is to realise he's a daddy.
Thank you for your help
Jackie

Chances are this is nothing to worry about, but I had a bit of a bad experience after my section and it might or might not be of interest.
I had a bit of pain and swelling after my section and when I mentioned it to the midwife she dismissed it. However after 10 days the wound opened and there was a terrible discharge - loads of it - and it didn't clear up for about 6 weeks. I took numerous antibiotics and had to stop breastfeeding as a result.
I feel quite angry that the midwife had the opportunity to get it treated before it got out of hand and she just dismissed it. So my advice would be to see the GP again and specifically ask whether it could be an infection. If it is then the earlier it is treated the easier it will be to clear up. And if it is nothing to worry about, then your mind will be at rest. That's what the GP is there for.
Hopefully it is nothing to worry about, but it is better to be safe than sorry.
Hi Jackie, congrats re. Joshua. The wonder of it all never stops!
I think the scars take far, far longer to heal than a couple of weeks. Mine was vivid red and tender for months. After 12 weeks or so, I went to the gym and had pain during all ab work. I went back to the hosp, they found nothing wrong but they said I was being too optimistic and could expect discomfort for at least another 3m!! I was also told that the pain is often on one side, the first incision side as that's slightly deeper.
'Take it easy' is usually the best advice, I know you want to do everything immediately, but you can't. A c-section is major surgery. Don't forget they advise having help for 6 weeks, not lifting, not driving etc. The problem is I suspect, we and everyone else just gets on with it.
hth, it does take time to recover. Enjoy Joshua!

Congratulations on the arrival of your little boy, he sounds divine!
As a fellow c-section gal, I can certainly relate to delayed healing, discomfort and general unpleasantness related to the scar. My obs said that it would take at least 3-6 months (wide time frame I know!) for the scar to "settle down completely". She also said that it was quite common for one end to take longer to heal than the other. I certainly had some stabbing pains, particularly when I was getting in and out of bed (difficult for night feeds!!) or up from low chairs. My advice, like Debra (wise woman that she is!), is to take it as easy as you can. A c-section is major abdominal surgery, not to mention all of the demands of looking after a tiny newborn baby.
Take good care and let us know how you're getting on

Same advice as others give your self time if you can. My scar took a good few weeks to heal one side was open and nasty looking for some time, which I found worrying but has healed now straight line except slightly thicker bit at one end. I had antibiotics and was advised to bathe it in tee tree oil watered down, also keep the air on it when you can though how they expect you to do that I'll never know!!! Also try to wear pants that don't sit on scar. Cate
Thank you Dee, Debra, Belinda and Cata for replying to my question -you all give good advice!!!
Was seen by midwife on Wednesday, unfortunately she came with a student who butted in all the time and made me feel extremely inadequate. I am seen by my normal midwife on Monday (day 22) and will discuss everything with her then.
Joshua is screaming the house down because John is changing his nappy and before feeding him. He can hear the bottle warmer and it sets him off everytime. We finally crawled out of bed at 11 am this morning, I've been put on sleeping tablets so we decided to make the most of it. Joshua is brilliant at night, I take medication at 11.30pm and we feed him then (he likes to have another bottle about 30 minutes later and take less than 20ml, but it is enough to send him off to sleep). He will then sleep through until 5.30am today it was 8am. I think we have been so lucky because he is only 20 days old.
I am having to do a seperate wash almost everyday for all his presents of new clothes -he has so many. I think we have bought something ourselves for him every day since he was born -I think that will have to stop soon though.
We are trying to get a decent photo of him for his passport, you can print one yourself if you take the photo using a digital camera. Asda said they can print them at passport size so we are attempting to take his photo but he always screams or puts his hands in front of him.
We are off now to feed the ducks. We planned this when I was pregnant, we would go up there each night and feed the ducks it gave us some time-out and got me out of the house. We decided that no matter what stress we have each day when the baby arrived we would feed the ducks to calm down and relax as a family.
John has been off work for 3 weeks now so just one week left. I know I have been very lucky having him around for so long. We are going to miss him so much. John said he is going to set up a webcam so he can see Joshua anytime of day.
Thanks again for the advice
Jackie

I had simlilar problems with my scar. After a lot of messing about I finally ended up with 4 courses of simultaneous antibiotics which got rid of the infection - this was 12 weeks post delivery I might add!
One thing which the hospital did tell me was that if there IS an infection you need to have swabs taken from the wound as otherwise it is very difficult to treat it with the RIGHT antibiotic - a note to bear in mind.
Another thing that did help to ease discomfort and aid healing was to wash the wound under the shower with cidal soap (you can get this at a pharmacy) and then dry the wound with a hairdryer on a cool setting.
Don't know how you are now but I hope that these tips will help!
