white noise

Post by Toni »

Hi girls

I have just given borth to twins, and we are having a bit of trouble getting into a decent sleeping pattern. i have heard that 'white noise/sound machines' can help to soothe a baby. does anybody have any ideas about this and where i could possible get one from in this country? at the moment all i seem to be able to find in US companies!

thanks loads

a very sleep deprived,

Toni x

Hi Toni, congratulations!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I read a lot about white noise too, didn't ever do it but wanted to share how we got into a routine without it.

When DD was 8 weeks old, I started Gina Ford's 'Contented Little Baby' routine although you can try from earlier. Have you rread it already? I loved her advice and pretty much the day we started, it worked. She does cover twin issues too. She is super strict (stupidly so) and treats readers like village idiots BUT IT WORKS! The standard counter-Gina argument is that the baby's routine takes over your life but truth is, if they're sleeping and eating to order, then life suddenly becomes a whole heap easier. I never minded having to make apts. to fit in as I knew when she'd be asleep.

This is only my opinion but if you introduce a means of helping them sleep, whether it's white noise, singing, rocking, nursing, etc. then you're stuck with that dictating how and when they sleep. It means no babysitters, no help and no flexibility. The only thing I did was buy an Ikea lullaby rabbit which I could take with me + bought several identical soft toys (machine washable - vital, most are surface wash only) so that we always had one with us.

hth and congratulations on the birth of your babies!

Hi Toni,

Congratulations on the birth of your twins.

Our little boy is 3 months old now and we really had trouble getting him off to sleep in the early weeks. We still do sometimes. It's funny how they just don't seem to know how to get to sleep.

We tried loads of methods but the thing that worked best for us was the noise from the extractor fan above the hob. We put it on full blast, hold him nearby so he can hear it and it works every time.

Also, if you tune the radio into nothing - just fuzzy noise - this might work. Good luck.

Toni!

Congratulations on your twins! I really like the Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child book by Dr. Weisbluth. It worked wonderfully with my first child and is doing the same with our 3 1/2 mos old.

0-8 weeks old he really just says to go with the flow as they are too young to establish major patterns. About when Jessica hit 12-14 weeks she displays signs of tiredness, such as pulling her ears, scratching her face, or yawning right around the 2 hour mark...she goes to sleep and naps beautifully as long as I don't let her get overtired and cranky. It's just like the book says.

I do like white noise, as I have 2 dogs who bark and a 5 yr old who is noisy. I have a humidifier in the baby's room and a Sharper Image white noise machine which I set on "Summer Night", it sounds like crickets chirping. It think it has 20 different settings, 1 of which is like a TV station that is getting no signal.

I loaned the book to my friend with twin boys...she also had a 22 mos old when they were born, and she said it saved her life. hmmmmm

Best of Luck, it gets easier and easier with each week. I'm sure you're exhausted.

Toni,

I forgot to mention that we've also got a Fisher Price "Aquarium" toy. It plays various different water sounds - like a bubbling stream or waves. This sometimes works to get our boy off to sleep. I certainly found it very relaxing myself but I guess you don't really need much help to get yourself off to sleep at the moment. You could probably sleep standing up with a circus going on around you.

As Paige says, it does get easier - we promise!

Toni, just seen Barny's post about the aquarium toy. The people I know with this, loved it. They set it to bubble noise and off they went!

Toni,

Congratulations on your twins! My twin boys are 5 month old now. Ever since we brought them home from the hospital, we've used white noise. It was actually pretty loud in the beginning, since it is harder for them to hear it when they are newborns. We use it for naps too. The other night I put them to bed and forgot to turn it on, and boy did they let me know it!

We use an FM radio, set between stations, so it is only static. It is nice because we have one in almost every room and it costs nothing. We also know that almost any relative we visit or hotel we stay in will have this exact same sound available!

Yes, we sometimes worry that they will still need it to fall asleep when they are 20 years old, but I plan to phase it out sometime before then. Maybe after I catch up on my sleep!
