Complete Beginner!, help!

Post by neroli »

Hi there!
Myself and my partner have been trying for a year to have a baby but unfortunately, nothing came of it. After realising that I am the only person left in my group of friends that isn't either pregnant or isn't having a baby as we speak, I decided that drastic measures had to be taken. After nagging my partner for the whole year to go and see his doctor about his equipment(!!) he finally went after I said I'd leave him and that's when we found out that sex drive has nothing to do with sperm drive!!! The fact that he has two kids from his previous partner seems to make no difference!! Okay, he's older than I am but he's a man and they are supposed to last well beyond the sell by date unlike us women folk! I was devastated but relieved at the same time as I thought there was something wrong with me. As soon as we knew what the problem was, we got it sorted (only in the pretend world). Unfortunately after having some minor op to tie some lose veins that were heating the poor guy up, nothing changed, in fact, his condition got worst for a while!! Now, we have started on the ICSI thing but got bad news this morning when my doctor told me that my dosage is too high and that maybe we'll have to stop for this month and the next and next to give my poor ovs a rest. I can't for the life of me understand how he could have gotten the dosage wrong after having checked my hormone levels the previous month. I'm 33 and he had me on 225 of the ICSI injections!! Tomorrow I have to take only 75 which seems to be a big decrease. Anyway, I won't bore you all to death but I don't know anyone else here in HK that is doing the same treatment as me as everyone seems too embarassed to join a club to talk about all the bags that go with IVF and ICSI. Just to let you all know, in HK, ICSI is dead expensive but also, it's a standard fertility procedure (in other words, they don't stop at just IVF, nearly all couples whether they need to or not go all the way to ICSI because I've been told that the success rate it higher)!! Is this true???
Neroli

Hi Neroli,

I've already answered your other posting started by Mags about 'coasting' which explains why you've been told to reduce the FSH injections to 75iu , and water drinking.

I believe that ICSI and IVF success rates tend to be comparable. IVF has the risk of the eggs not fertilising. ICSI has risks of damage to the eggs during the ICSI procedure and also increased risks of miscarriage as the abnormal sperm genetics may be used unknowingly (bypassing the fact that nature would not allow fertilisation in normal cases - this doesn't sound applicable in you case though)

It sounds like you've not been monitered closely enough whilst you've been on the FSH drugs. Most UK clinics take blood at least every other day after a couple of days on them (I've started both cycles on 450iu and this has decreased steadily) How long have you been injecting for? I'm guessing they'd want to see you fairly often now they've realised there is a problem - its not always easy for them to predict 1st time who will over-react to the drugs and who won't.

Hope this helps to put your mind at rest.

Fiona xx
