Wellbutrin during pregnancy

Post by betty »

Does anyone have any info/experience/opinion about taking Wellbutrin while pregnant? I received a prescription while I was trying to get pregnant (sometime between my 3rd failed IUI and before my 1st +ive IVF). It helped a LOT. Much of my very low mood was definitely due to my battle with infertility but I believed then--and now--that it wasn't the only factor.

Both the fertility doctor and the psychiatrist who prescribed the medication felt comfortable with me taking it while trying to conceive but at my last psych. visit she asked me if I wanted to continue now that I'm pregnant. (Yikes, isn't it a little late to ask?) She said I'd have to weigh the risks--argh, what risks? So far I can't find anything all that conclusive but there's very little data and the drug's only been around for 10 years.

I wasn't suicidal but did have trouble getting through the day without crying.

Thoughts?

My sister-in-law was on welbutrin (or something similar) through her last pregnancy. The only problem she ran into was after the baby as born she did not have her meds with the at the hospital (emergency c-section). She and the baby went into withdrawls (as the baby was used to recieving the meds in her womb.

At about two days old, the baby(my neice) experienced some seizures and was sent to the children's hospital to figure it out. When it was all said and done, they could only link the seizures to my sister's anti-stress/anti-depressant medication. She has since returned to taking her medication regularly and both mom and baby are fine.

I am obviously not a doctor but my sister was emotionally great through her pregnancy while on her meds. It was too much of a risk for her not to take it because she also has two other children to care for at home. Her mental health important too.

Good luck with your decision!

Dear Betty,

I had once on Wellbutrin for some time to tread my depression which was caused by the same reason of yours. But depending on drug is not a long term option, and it cannot help to pregnant. After I decided to start IVF, I asked my psychiatrist whether should stop the drug. He said yes. Wellbutrin is no good for pregnancy, but he prescribed me other medicines, Zoloft and Lexapro. They are safe. I took the medicine for a very short period, then stoped. I didn't want any drug in my system, I wanted a drug free, all natural body to conceive a new life. So I stopped all medication one month before the cycle started. I'm so happy now with a triplets pregnancy, and I feel less depressed, even though I still cry sometimes, but I have a lot of hope of my future.

I know you should listen to your doctor on medication, but I think if it's not nessecary, or if you can overcome the depression, you should stop taking drugs. As long as you have plans to be accomplished, you should feel fulfilled.

Good luck, and feel better. :)

Thanks for weighing in, so far I'm still taking it. I didn't mention having a three year old to take care of full time which is part of the decision. The drug has helped me be a better mom so I think I'll stay with it for now.
