Flying durning first tri.

Post by princess »

Have any of you flown during your first tri? I will be 2 days away from being 8 weeks and am supposed to fly to My inlaws. It's only about an hour in a half but I am scared!!!!!!!!!
The obgyn says it's ok but!! well I don't want to do anything to harm the baby.
Thanks
Love
Joy

Hey Joy,

As you can see from my ticker, I don't actually belong over here, but was just taking a peek at what was going on!!

I flew twice during the first and second trimesters and my obs was also fine with this. She said I needed to drink well during the flight and do those ankle whirly type exercises for circulation (slightly higher risk of DVT when flying during pregnancy, though this doesn't tend to be a risk during short flighs of less than three hours).

Congrats on your pregnancy, that's fab news!!

Hi Princess,
I feel the same as you. Im due to fly over to Ireland next weekend and was worried that at 6 wks it might harm the baby. Asked my Dr and she said it's fine to fly. Just drink plenty of water and relax. There's no evidence to suggest that flying can cause any harm - will let you know how I get on!

Hi I dont know about the flying, but make sure you tell security that you are pregnant and have a doctors note with you so that you dont have to go thru the xray machines. I never knew about this, but it was the first thing my GP told me when I got pg, but as I havent flown it didnt apply to me anyway.
Hope you have a great time

Hi Joy

I got my BFP with my twins just a week and a half before I was due to fly to Switzerland on holiday and my clinic said that it would be fine. I was fine on the flight out and back (although I didn't much enjoy sitting in a cigarette filled departure lounge on the way home). I don't think that there is any evidence that flights have any effect on early pregnancy and I wouldn't worry if I was you.

Hi Joy,
I got the same advice as B. I flew to Hawaii (8 hour flight) at the end of my first trimester/beginning of my second. My doc said to make sure to stay hydrated and either walk up and down the isle every so often or do ankle twirls. Being pregnant you're at a higher risk of developing a blood clot. These exercises prevent fluid from pooling in your lower extremities. This advice was for long trips. With a short hop you should be fine doing nothing. Just make sure you stay hydrated.
