Baseline scan

Post by bucko1976 »

I am after a bit of advice or past experience.

I have recently been for my basline scan and it showed up that I have only 3 folicles. I didn't think this was a problem, but my consultant seems to think that because of this I may not respond to the treatment.

I was wondering what other people's baseline scans showed. Did anyone have very little folicles but were not told it would cause problems, or maybe had few folicles at the baseline scan but went on to produce many more.

I am after this help and advice because my consultant wants me to decide whether or not to continue with the cycle. I would hate to think that I gave up when it has been proven that others in a similar situation have been sucessful enough to get to egg collection.

Please help!!!

Jaqui, it's a bit strange that the consultant isn't willing to offer an opinion based on professional experience. Did s/he have any advice for you?

I've had a baseline scan only showing a few at full size and others smaller but by EC they've all been big enough to collect from. I never respond with more than 10 follies (but at 41 wouldn't expect many more) but my clinic are happy as my follie/egg/fertilisation/+ve rate has been good to date.

Is this exactly the same as your previous cycle? what happened then?

Good luck
Debra.

I'm sorry Jacqui - Strange as this may sound after 3 cycles, I don't know how may follies I had at baseline scan. All I know is that everything was fine. I thought the baseline scan was just to show how thin the uterus lining was, not how many follies there were... .(so it just shows ..)

As Debra says, you'd think that your doc could advise on whether in their opinion you shoud go ahead or not .. I presume you've asked for their opinion ? If they're still sayng either way I'd probably go with it. That's because I'm damn stubborn, and particulary that way out tonight. Lots of PMA (positive mental attitude) helps you know.

Let us know what happens next.

Hi Jaqui

I was also a bit confused with what you meant by baseline scan. From what I understand of the IVF treatment I had, after downregging they do a scan to check your uterus lining is thin, to show your system is effectively 'shutdown'.They can then take control of your cycle by starting the stimulating injections. Its at this point after a few days you should be producing follicles. My first scan after starting stimulating injections showed no response at all. (Cant remember exactly how many days after starting stimming, but at least 4 or 5 days I think). They then more than doubled my dose of stimming drugs (I was on Gonal F). I did start to respond, but slowly at first and there were only 8 follicles a week before EC. 3 days before EC I had responded more and had a few more follicles, but they didnt know if some would be big enough. They collected 12 eggs on EC day. I dont know if this helps, but from my experience things can change by EC day.
Good luck!

Thanks everone for the advice and help. I have decided to contact my consultant to ask him to explain things becuase like a lot of you I thought you produce the folicles once stimming.

It wasn't my usual consultant that told me the news - mine was still on holiday. Mine is supposed to be back tomorrow, so I shall make an appointment to see him and get his opinion.

If however, I don't get the answers I am looking for, or if for some strange reason they do things differently to everywhere else I am considering stopping the treatment and finding another clinic.

Will let you know how I get on

Thanks again
