Stopping progesterone - please help!

Post by CC »

Hi everyone - just wondered if there are any risks in stopping the progesterone pessaries? I forgot to ask my clinic if there were any chances that my body wouldn't pick up the job or any symptoms I should watch out for. My clinic told me to stop when I reached 10 weeks (which I have) but I don't know if they meant beginning or end of week and it seems early - don't many of you continue until week 12? If I take them too long are there risks in that too? Oh questions, questions, questions and its Saturday so I can't ring clinic till Mon but I think I had my last pessary last night (i.e. the nurse had said 2 weeks from my week 8 scan) - I do have some more but don't know whether to use them over the weekend or not!
Can anyone help / share their progesterone experiences?
I would be very grateful,
Cherylxx

Hi Cheryl,
I stopped pessaries at 10w 3 days...Noside effects, but the spotting stopped.
Week 12 onwards for 3 weeks I was on progesterone injections- given once a week.
Since then nothing- and no problems- it seems the body picks up progesterone production on its own..
Hope this helps.
Take care.
Hugs,
smita

Hi Cheryl

My clinic never said a specific time, I think they meant for me to continue up until approx 12 weeks, but I was told to reduce the dosage for approx the last 2 weeks. I ended up on them until 13 weeks, but this was only because they had ended up giving me a higher strength by mistake and when I rang and asked them, they said to use less. I just decided myself to finish off what I had! If you are worried about stopping, then just keep going over the weekend and ring your clinic on Monday, it wont do any harm. I know some clinics stop giving progesterone quite early on, so you are probably ok if you stop now anyway! Do whatever you feel happiest with. I didnt feel any different after stopping them.
Take care

Thanks Kim and Smita - I'll probably take them over weekend to be on safe side and then ring Monday to be sure - thanks for reassurances re. possibly overdosing on thme which I'm not worried about now. Smita - how come you had to have injections when reaching week 12?
Kim - congrats on latest scan and discovering little girl - you must be thrilled.
See you both on 2nd tri soon (I hope)

I was on Progesterone injections for 10 weeks I think that the 10 week mark is the CRM's system, your body takes over the production around that time.

We took Joshua to see the CRM staff yesterday, our consultant greeted us and fetched the nurses, Mary the theatre nurse and the embreyologist and Dr who did our 2nd attempt. Everyone was so pleased for us and loved holding Joshua. YOu really should go there when your little one arrives, it is such a great experience and it really meant a lot to us seeing how pleased everyone was.

The maternity hospital is great with private tv's, internet access and telephone for each patient. I had a c-section so can't tell you about the labour ward but everything was so clean etc Enjoy the rest of your pregnancy, its a bit scary being signed off from the clinic after so long but remember they are not going to give you any advice which would hurt you or the baby.

Take care

Jackie

Cheryl,
I forgot to mention that like Kim, I was also weaned off the pessaries and the injections once a week are given at my clinic to all women pregnant thru ivf(for 4 weeks) as part of the normal protocol- so cant help you there!

Like you I was worried when the time to stop the pessaries and the tablets came. My clinic recomends that you take the pessaries for 77days after a positive result. And I was on progynova tablets as well for 77days, I stopped these last week but I am fine I havent noticed anything that causes me to worry. I think every clinic's protocol is different.

You did well for continuing with them thru the weekend until you can talk to your clinic, This is not the time to take any chances.GOODLUCK.

Thank you so much for help, support and advice - I really appreciate it. Jackie - thanks for info specific to CRM - that was great and info about new hospital - can't wait to visit CRM with a little bundle - I will definiteyl do that if all goes to plan. Jacs - so sorry you didn't get option - it obviously has done you no harm though as your pregnancy is fine and it mihght be that your medication didn't suppress progesterone production as much as some does. Everything will be fine though so don't worry.
