Overseas IVF Clinic's?

Post by JitterBugz »

Has anyone here gone to an IVF clinic overseas? I was doing some research on line for RE's and IVF clinics and overseas clinics keep popping up. The cost factor is VERY different and they seem to offer the same services (obviously except for the traveling part). As for the IVF clinic's here in the states I have noticed some of the Dr's were trained overseas, so I would think the competence of the Dr's would be the same. So if anyone has done this, what was the experience like and where did you go? Sorry if my questions seem abrupt or offend anyone. I am just trying to see what is best for me and my family. Any advice or info you can provide would be great.

TIA

Hi Heather and welcome!

I had my first IVF ICSI done abroad, and although the reslut was negativ, I was very happy with the clinic and the treatment.
But we moved soon after and I could not try again there. Anyway, as it was a private clinic, it was way too expansive for me to try again (altogether $3000)
The only difficulty was to communicate: My doctor was speaking a very good english so that was not the problem, but overthere, the mentality is very different: unless I was asking some questions, nobody would tell me what to expect. And when I was asking questions, most of the time the answer was : don't worry-no problem!
So I think it is a bit more stressful to do it abroad than in your country.
As well, they had no support group.

My Doctor was turkish (but the IVF was not done in Turkey)
I am going to do a second IVF ICSI in my country, France (the NHS re-imburse 100% of the cost of the treatment/operations after acceptation of the paperworks for French people) and I feel a lot less stressed than the first time!

But if you decide to go abroad, make sure to visit the clinic first and ask as many questions as you can!

Wish you luck

Souris,
Thank you, for replying to my message.

Hello, $3000 seems like a deal to me. Here in the USA the average cost for IVF can run $8000 to $12000 each cycle. Also here in the states very few insurances cover IVF or any other fertility treatment, and our insurance covers's nothing. If we had our IVF done here in the states we could only afford one try at IVF and that is it, so I am really leaning toward going outside the US.

Again Thanks so much for your reply. I wish you all the luck on your next try!

Jitter, we also consider looking into clinics outside the US since it's so expensive. A few weeks ago, 60 minutes had an episode on surgery overseas and it was quite interesting. Try looking into Thailand, India, etc. 60 was specifically talking about Thailand and it was very affordable.
Good luck!

I have looked into getting treatment in India only. The Doctor I plan on going with worked/trained in California for six years before going back to India, he also trained in London.

I am going to look up the 60 minute show you are talking about. I hope I can order a copy of that program. I need all the info I can get.

Thanks a ton for the help! Good luck with treatment!

If it's the same show I saw recently, the didn't feature fertility tmt as such but did mention it in the intro as one of the tmts people are going abroad for. They concentrated on heart and hip tmts, lwith ots about the high quality of care/equip/hosp etc.
