Dos and Don'ts

Post by seepi »

HI all,

I've got a very early BFP and now I am wondering if I can relax any of the rules from 2ww?

- like drinking coffee
- having a bath?
- the odd glass of wine is ok?

Also I'm concerned about airport x-ray machines. Has anyone heard anythign about ther safety of these?

Congrats.
Decaff coffee is ok.
Baths have to be warm NOT HOT, because you don't want to raise your temp too high.
I have always heard a glass of wine once in a while is ok.
Take care
Joy

Hi Seepi

Congratulations on your BFP!! :D
This is now where you start to worry about what you can and cant do and different books/people tell you differently! As far as coffee goes, because it is the caffeine consumption you have to be careful with, you are also advised to limit intake of tea, chocolate and some soft drinks. (There is less caffeine in these than coffee though). From what Ive read, as long as you arent drinking several cups a day, you should be ok. Ive limited myself to one cup of coffee a day and then been careful not to overdo tea or chocolate.
Hot baths - its just the temperature you have to becareful with, as Joy says. Just take care not to overheat.
Alcohol - This is the one I have been more concerned about. I didnt drink at all until 16 weeks and then have had the odd glass of wine since. (I have heard so many different things). My midwife has said it is ok as long as I had no more than 1-2 units once or twice a week. (Which is what a lot of books say). However, I have heard a lot recently of how they dont know how much alcohol can affect the unborn child and to be completely safe, you should avoid altogether!
I dont know about airport xray machines, im afraid.
All I have said is just what I have picked up on/read in books. I would say read up on things, but dont worry too much. A lot of the time, we are advised just to be cautious because no-one really knows how much effect things have. Id say go with your instincts.

Take care

Just wanted to say about airport x-ray machines that there is no known side-effect.

I have just been for a holiday and checked with my Midwife first and she said that there is absolutely nothing to worry about - they are perfectly safe.

Take care and good luck

Seepi, I'd say err on the side of caution as long as it doesn't leave you feeling angry and deprived!

I didn't drink a drop throughout my pregnancy (and I LOVE my wine) but only because I didn't want to vs. being told not to.

Re. the airport scanners. I asked not to go through them and the staff have always agreed but frisked me x 2!

I agree with Kim's comment about different advice and so I went with the most conservative opinion. Again, only because it made me feel better.

Congratulations on your BFP you must be so pleased!! just try and enjoy the best you can. I didn't have any baths I just showered, and I also didn't drink any wine or anything well behaved, and just to avoid certain foods.
All the best.

Hello Seepi
I'd agree with the things the others have said. I never stopped having baths, but did make sure the water wasn't too hot. I limit my coffee intake - drink de-caff most of the time instead. As for alcohol, I give myself a treat of a small glass of wine on a saturday evening. My midwife said that this wasn't a problem - but getting drunk would be!!! I know that there is a lot of publicity about now in terms of alcohol so you just need to go with what you're comfortable with.
Best of luck with things
