progesterone

Post by ttc3yrs »

Hi There,

I'd like to ask you girls a question. Is anyone still taking Progesterone shots? I was asked by my doctor continue the progesterone until my first scan.

I just read the label on my drug, it says "Progesterone or progesterone-like drugs have been used to prevent miscarriage in the first few months of pregnancy, but no adequate evidence is available to show that they are effective for this purpose. Furthermore, most cases of early miscarriage are due to causes which could not be helped by these drugs. "

"There is an increased risk of minor birth defects in children whose mothers take this drug during the first 4 months of pregnancy. Several reports suggest an association between monthers who take these drugs in the first trimester of pregnancy and genital abnormalities in male and female babies. Avoid using the drug during the first trimester of pregnancy...... "

I'm a little bit worried about this. I've been on the progesterone shots for about 3 weeks. Does anybody have the same concern? I'll talk to my doctor on monday. If anybody here has any information about this, please let me know. Thanks.

Have a great weekend,
May

May

I had to continue with the progesterone suppositories for several weeks following the pregnancy test.

I know that it varies from hospital to hospital.

I've been on the progesterine shots since the day after my retrevial.
After my first scan (6 weeks) I went from daily, to every other day.
The 17th is my next scan and doctor says that as of a week from monday - no more shots for me.

Hmmm.... I hadn't heard anything about the birth defects.

Brandy, congratulations on your scan. It definitely is the coolest thing ever! I wish what your doctor said about miscarrying has dropped from 25% to 10% is applicable to all of us!!

Ange, congratulations on seeing 2 bundles of joy!!!

May, good luck for your scan on Oct 24. Your HCG numbers are great. You feel more confident as the numbers go up each time!

KC, congratulations on your scan!!! It must've been amzing to see that heartbeat in you!

Seepi, congratulations on your BFP! The scans are usually after 2 weeks after your BFP (but that may vary from place to place).
May, It’s been almost 5.5 weeks now (since egg retrieval) and I'm still on progesterone suppositories. My doctor has asked me to stay on it till 12 weeks. It seems it helps in prevention from miscarriage. In fact my sister-in-law miscarried the first time becos of the hormone deficiency. The next round she was on the suppositories and delivered a baby girl.

Susan, I'm now addicted to the website you posted on this thread!!

Take care all and loads of good luck to all.

Dora and all others...what my doc says does apply to all :D So, I hope it helps with pma. After 4 weeks (fetal age), especially if they can detect a heartbeat, the risk of miscarrying drops from 25% to 10%. And she said with each passing week the risk becomes less and less. It definitely makes me feel a little better :D :D

Regarding the progesterone...I have been on progesterone shots since the day of my retrieval, and my doctor wants me to stay on it until the 8th or 10th week gestationally. So, hopefully not much longer. I never heard about the birth defects...after all your body is supposed to produce it naturally in order to sustain the pregnancy :?:

Thank you girls for the information. It seems that progesterone has become the standard treatment for all the ivf patients to prevent the miscarriage. I think for the patient who is lack of progesterone by her own, it's a necessary treatment. But for the patients who doesn't have the progesterone problem, I'm not sure it's a good idea to give extra since their body can produce enough progesterone. I'll talk to my Doctor on Monday. Perhaps I'm just being paranoid. I just doesn't want to do anything might hurt the baby. I'll let you know what my Doctor says.

Take care,
May

Good morning ladies... hope all of you are doing good!

Was wondering if any of you are experiencing cramping at all before/during/after the first scan?? I've been told since the uterus is expanding, it is normal to have them, but just wanted to find out if anyone is actually experiencing it. I've noticed that if I stand for a long time or do any sort of a little extra work, the pains start and I have to lie down (which helps) or I just take a Tylenol (seems that is safe to have during pregnancy!). I have my second scan Oct. 11, hopefully all is well (am absolutely paranoid)!

Love,
Dora

Hi dora

I had cramps all day Fri and Sat. They feel v similar to AF pains but not just as bad. I took myself off to bed yest with a hot water bottle and felt a whole lot better after. I'm driving myself and DH mad! We don't have our scan til 7 weeks so we've still a week and a half to wait. I did another pregnancy test today because I was so worried about the cramps. I've read 3 diff books and they all say cramping without bleeding is ok. I've read other people on the board say they experienced the same thing. Hope this puts ur mind at rest.

Hi, dora :) Yes, I experience cramps as well. They sort of come and go. I won't feel anything for days and then I will feel them regularly for a while. As mentioned in another post, my doctor says it is normal and is usually from your uterus expanding and growing. Hope this helps you feel better...I still don't like feeling it even thought it is supposed to be okay

may and seepi, just wanted to say congrats and welcome from me as well!!
goodluck to jessica who scans today, its so nerve-wrecking but exciting all in one!
dora, ive experienced a lot of AF type pains during the 2ww, after it but especially before the scan - i honestly thought it was all over, thankfully its all meant to be normal but its so darn worrying!! the AF type cramps have stopped/slowed down but the other day my left side was hurting, like ovary pain (similar to something like cyst pain in the ovary) thankfully thats gone as well, my sister suggested i may have slept wrong but i tell ya, i dont think i'll ever totally relax until i hold our baby in our arms and know that everything is ok!!
again, goodluck to all!
luv, d :D

:D :D

Hi everyone! First, congratulations to Ange and KC. I am so happy for you both.

As for me, DH and I just returned from our clinic where we saw first one beautiful heartbeat, then... a second! We are in such shock...TWINS! Wow. We are of course thrilled, excited, and scared all at the same time. We just keep looking at each other and laughing.

Anyway, now we wait for the next scan which will be on 10/21 to see how the are progressing.

Sorry...forgot to ask my question in my post. Does anyone know whether the miscarriage percentages (dropping from 25% to 10% when the heartbeat is seen) also applies to twins?

Thanks!
