Has anyone ever had to have both tubes removed due to old case of PID. I was told by my doctor that my tubes had to be removed completely and my doctor coudlnt' do it becasue I had adhesions and the scars were too dense. So I am having a specialist to remove my tubes.
I just saw you're message and thought I'd send you a reply. I was admitted to hospital with PID about 6 or 7 years ago.
I have polycystic ovaries and combined with the pid, it knackered both of my tubes, and last year I had an operation to remove both of them. I was only 24 when I found out that I would have to have them both taken out, and had to wait 9 months on a waiting list for my op.
When I had my op they found that I had some scarring and adhesions because of the pid, but they hopefully have sorted that out for now.
It took me a long time to come to terms with having to have my tubes removed, but I feel that it was the right choice for me and my partner. I've known for years that because of my PCOS that I would probably need help in terms of IVF in order to conceive - and by having the op it became a definate. I did a lot of research and found out that by having both of the tubes removed, that it would increase the chances of IVF working, so I tried to look at it in a positive way (very hard I can tell you!!!).
I have just completed my first cycle of IVF, and am half way through my 2 week wait. I test next week and am so hoping for a result!!!
I don't know if I have helped you in any way, but I do feel that it has made my chances of having a successful cycle were helped by me having the op.
Thank you so much! I went to IVF one time and everythign was perfect and got a BFN so before I do my second cycle I wanted to make sure that I didnt' get the same result. Sure enough they did a test which they shoudl have done the first time and said I have bilateral Hydros and they recommended removing both tubes. Good luck on your test result. I pray this will be my answer in order to have my baby.
Thank you!
I am in the same situation. I have bilateral hydros, left if much worse than the right, you can actually see it on ultrasound. My dr. suggested taking both of them out before IVF. I had the surgery scheduled 2 different times and both times it was cancelled for 1 reason or another (arrived at the hospital and everything), so after that I said let's just skip it and hope for the best. For some reason I was not meant to have that surgery then. I am in my 1st IVF cycle and hoping that the hydros do not interfere. We will see what happens this round and go from there.
Let me know how you do with the surgery and your next IVF attempt.

I don't know if you were told this, but I forgot to mention that I had the bilateral hydro's, and found out that it was the fluid in the tubes that can be toxic to the embryo's - resulting in possible bfn's, so that it why I decided that it would be better for me to go ahead with the removals.
my doc did a specail test some kind of a ultra sound to take a good look at my tubes.
i didnt have to have mine taken out but my tubes wernt any good.
we werent blessed with our babies to raise here but we our blessed with our grandaughter

Hi ladies. I've just had my left tube removed as it appeared to be a hydrosalpinx during my last treatment. After having a BFN at the beginning of May the consultant said that he didn't really want to go ahead again without removing it. I was really upset but reluctantly agreed. It took 3 hours to remove it laprascopically together with adhesions from previous surgery and the op was performed by my IVF doc/gynae. We did, however, telephone another clinic who said that they knew this course of action was sometimes taken but they would not do it, they would simply control the situation with antibiotics. I think its another one of those things where there's no definite answer.
Good luck.

I had a appointment with my doctor and he said that they normally when you have old infections, that they your tubes are badly damaged and you get scar tissue around your organs and on your liver. He said it does not affect anything, he said he just cuts around the scar tissue and then remove the tubes. Sometimes they have to open you up if it's too bad, he said but it's a very small percentage that actually has to be be opened up. I would rather remove my tubes then do it again, knowing the fluid is there and decrease my chances. Good Luck. My surgery is November 10 so I'm praying all goes well
Hi CJB
I also had a hydro in my left tube and for that 2 BFN IVF cycles (july and September 2005) also had 2 previous miscarriages and of course an ectopic 4 years ago which caused the hydro.
I had surgery last friday, nad now I feel so much better whithout it 'cause I'm sure that was it...Now,I decided to try naturally for a few months and see what happens.I know with only one good tube remaining, my chances are going to be every other month, but i'll try 'cause there are papers which suggest the natural way can still be positive over a few months in women with one tube that works!!!!
What are your plans?, if I may ask...

Good luck with your surgery. My tubes are also causing a problem, we have had 6 attempts of ivf (1 early m/c). I have severe endometriosis so due to adhesions my tube is stuck to my bowel along with everything else. They tried to do mine as a laparoscopy but I need to be 'opened up' as you put it, so they are still trying to decide if they will go ahead and do the surgery, I'll find out in a few weeks.
I'd go for it and if my doctor comes back after consulting the bowel specialist I'll definately be having mine removed/clipped (whatever they can manage). The fluid from the tube can kill the embryos, prevent implantation and may be related to miscarraiges or so they told me anyway.
Good luck

I was diagnosed with PID in 1989. To cut a long story short I was rushed into hospital aged 18 with a huge abcess in my pelvis. I had my left tube removed completely along with part of my right ( why they didn't remove the whole lot I don't know ). Anyway since then i've had ongoing problems with ovarian cysts etc and after my last op to drain a cyst my gynecolologist saig that he really wouldn't want to risk surgery on me again only in an emergency due to scar tissue and adhesions. Apparantly he almost perforated my bowel during my last op.
I had IVF in Leeds five years ago which was negative. The consultant there said that he would advise me to have the remaining part of my tube removed because of the possibility of fluid leaking but no one is willing to do it because of the risk. We tried IVF privately recently and had a BFN once again at a different clinic. We asked the Dr there if it could be because of my remeining tube and he said that he didn't know, that it was just one of those things. I really dodn't know what to do as the thought of surgery again really scares me but if I knew that it would give me a BFP then I would consider it. The thing is no one seems to really know. Hope this helps.
Ever the optimist, I'll be secretly hoping for a natural conception. Unfortunatley DH's sperm count is practically zero so it would be a miracle if it works!! Its therefore ICSI for us - should be starting next February. I do feel more positive about it. Have already started eating healthy, doing some exercise, really limiting alcohol and so is DH.
Wishing you loads of luck over the next few months and hope you get your wish. Same goes to all you other ladies with tubal problems! I'm pleased I'm not alone.
I do worry about my remaining tube though and wonder whether it would have been better to get rid of both at the same time. I guess the adhesions have to go somewhere and, having had loads removed in October 04, there were many more this August. Not sure if my remaining tube will get infected??

CJB,
Why would the other tube get infected? Please try to stay POSITIVE and leave the Stress to the Dr!!!!!!!!!
After reading a lot about L-arginine, after my 1st. BFN cycle (egg issues 'cause of significant fragmentation) for my 2nd cycle my DH and I decided to start taking before starting with our 2nd cycle. We took 1 gr/day and he also took my prenatal vitamins. Well, let me tell you that our 2nd cycle was sogood concerning the egg quality, that even our Dr was surpised!!!! they made to Blasts!!!!! and an excellent grade.
I'm sure it was the L-arginine 'cause that was the really significant change in our diet ( I also stop the cafein)
Please, if you could just look for it in the internet and read all it's properties, I think you'll be surprised and start considering it, for sure!!!! Also there's a bunch of papers about it in pubmed.com (if you look for L-arginine,male infertility or sperm count or motility),
Do me a favor and read about it 'casue it might help you.
After the surgery I've started taking it again 'cause I'm convinced it really worked. My DH never stoped taking it since he started.
Hope you find this interesting,
stay in touch ,
