Egg retrieval for IVF and implantation?
Hi... I am having my egg retrieval on thursday and my implantation on Sunday... can anyone tell me how it REALLY feels? is it painful? were you totally knocked out during the retrieval... were you sore afterwards? how long were you on bedrest if at all? what was your protocol for these two things? Sorry, I am just anxious and scared

It's a big thing you're going through here and it's completely normal to be anxious and scared but try not panic. It's generally a bigger deal emotionally than physically. I've only been through it once, this summer, but this was my experience:
- egg collection: I was under heavy sedation, which is not a full on general anaesthetic, but I was out for the whole thing and don't remember anything about it. You come round more quickly than from a general anaesthetic.
- after egg collection: I felt absolutely fine immediately afterwards but unfortunately I was sick in the car on the way home. That was just a reaction to the sedation and also it was a hot day, we were stuck in a jam. I was ok after that. I think some people can be sick after anaesthesia and some aren't, I was just a bit unlucky.
- next few days: the worst thing (and I think this is fairly common) is bloating. They pump your abdomen full of gas to see your ovaries properly, so you can be left rather swollen up. This sometimes causes some gas pain and difficulty standing up straight. Also your ovaries get rather full because all those empty cavaties fill up with fluid, so they can be a bit sore, but mine were only sore if I poked them. So I didn't do that! The clinic gave me painkillers but I didn't even take one, so really the pain is not a big deal. I spent the afternoon after EC in bed, but was up and about after that, though taking it easy and not always standing up straight!
- embryo transfer: this is quite similar to a smear test (a pap test to you, I think). Getting the speculum in place was by far the most uncomfortable bit, after that it was easy. They'd fed the fine tube through my cervix before I had any idea that it had happened and I didn't feel a thing. I found it quite emotional and held DH's hand and looked at him and thought we were making babies.
- after ET: there was still a bit of the post-EC bloating going on, but it was diminishing. There didn't seem to be any specific after effects of ET, though I think some people get a bit of spotting.
There are mixed views on what you should do after ET. One school of thought is that you should have 3 days strict bed rest, which I sort of managed. It was more 3 days lying around on the sofa with my feet up watching telly. Other people just get on with their lives as normal. You have to do what feels right for you.
The other thing I did was try to find things to relax me when I got anxious. I found a very good shiatsu practioner who was prepared to come to the house and that really calmed me down. A bit of gentle yoga also helped.
Good luck with it. Your fears are perfectly normal, we've all been there and we've all come out the side to tell the tale. You'll be ok.

for me egg collection was a bit painful as i had sedation but could feel them popping each follicle, although it was not horrendous and i would definately do it again. having said that the majority of people feel absolutely nothing, so hopefully you are one of these. I felt a little sore afterwards and rested for the day, but nothing major.

They put me under - but it wasn't full general anethesia. When I woke up - I was really cramping (they retrieved 11 eggs) and that lingered for several hours. I found that the Tylenol 3 made me feel worse, so I just tried to sleep for the rest of the day.
I tried to return to work the following day and promptly left after 1 hour. I was dizzy and weak. Don't try to push it.
It may be a "quick" procedure, but it's still alot on your body. Those follicles fill back up with fluid and they are super tender. Take it easy on yourself for a week!

I have to be really honest with you and tell you I thought egg collection was horrendous! I was given analgesia/sedative but don't think it was enough. The nurse offered me gas and air as well but I was just past myself with pain and wanted it to be over with. In saying all this, I knew that it had to be done so I ended up just getting thru it. It took about 20 minutes and I was sore and tender for about a week after. Plain paracetamol helped. Sorry to tell it like it is but I wish I'd been prepared for it before I went through it. We are lucky to get pregnant first time but I know if I had to I'd still go through it again. Just focus on the reason you are there. It helps.

as Bonbon (sorry to say that)... my EC was very painful. I was under general anaesthetic so I did not feel one thing during the Op, but I soon as I opened my eyes I felt the pain. It was very difficult to walk, so I did not do much but lying down until Egg transfer. But no bloating for me!
I think ET would have been pain free if i was not still in pain from EC. But the nurse had to press my sore belly for the doc to see where he was going!! But the transplant itself was nothing, like a smear test.
Anyway, it was not that bad as I am trying a 2 time in January! I cant wait and if i could do it tody I would!
But dont be scared, i think for most of the girls ET and EC was pain less.
And it is all worth it!

As Caroline has said, don't panic - but do be aware that everyone reacts differently. It also depends on how many follicles are opened. On each occassion it's taken me a full 7 days following EC before I've been able to stand up fully straight, and have had bad bloating (around 24 follies).

Like you I was absolutley terrified. I got painkillers and sedation but all i remember is the doctor asking me to shuffle down the bed then waking up asking my husband if he managed to do his part. apparantly though i was awake throughout
I was up and about within 2 hours. Had something to eat then went home. I had no pain or bloating. The only side effect was a tiny bit spotting the day of the transfer.
Again when i went back for the transfer i was terrified. It was slightly uncomfortable (just like a smear). Mine took a little longer than normal as my cervix is in a strange place.
But to be honest it was no where near as bad as expected.
Hopefully yours wont be either.

Found this thread useful as I have had my EC today. It was no where near as bad as I thought after reading some of messages on this thread. Just had sedative that made me a bit wobbly and pain relief suppository. When they were getting eggs etc it was a sort of pushing down pain but not bad at all. I went a bit pale and clammy at one point but I was absolutely fine. Been asleep at home for a few hours and now I feel fine no pain, just a bit of spotting. I should add that I didn't have many follicles so it only took about 10/15 minutes. I guess it's a bit tougher if there are more.

Good afternoon Ladies
I had My EC on Monday 24/10/05. EC was the part I worried about most with IVF I was Sedated I don’t remember much when they collected the eggs, I had 21 Follies I got 19 Eggs out 14 fertilised.
After few hours I feel a lot of pain such as my tummy bloating, vomiting, feeling unwell, I am still feeling bet pain.
Unfortunately they will not embryo transfer because I have problem Uterus Lining to thicken was not good respond they said we need 7.5mm and I have got 3.5. They told me if they transfer it will not good chance I will become pregnant.
14 embies waiting for me it was so hard to not have those Babies put Back in, I was disappointed.
I have got a Follow appointment on 3 November to investigate what is wrong my uterus?, after they found the problem they will decided when they will do transferee.
Would appreciate any advice with this first cycle as I find it hard to stay positive this Uterus Lining Thicken was not good)

When I had EC I was under sedation, it seemed to knock me right out, apparently I was talking the whole way through it though!! I kept asking if my eggs were ok, in the end they sedated me more (I think it was to keep me quiet
) I didnt find it painful at the time but I was sick about an hour afterwards. The next day was very painful but that was because I had severe OHSS so I never got to go for ET.
Good luck, im sure it will be nowhere near as bad as your think
