First IVF try!

Post by Julie E »

Hi, I am new to this site. I am scheduled to have transfer on Saturday, October 29th. My retrieval day was Monday, October 24th and they took 16 good ones. On Tuesday the Doctor called and said that I had 12 make it through the first stage, I was very excited. He called again Thursday morning and said he was a little concerned. I guess out of the 12 only 1 is really good and 3 are ok, the rest are very fragmented and considered poor. I don't know what to think about this. Should I be worried that this isn't going to work, is it possible that I could end up with all bad ones by Saturday? We were hoping to have extras so we could freeze them and have more children in a year or so but now I don't know if we will be able to do that either. I don't know if we will be able to afford another cycle if they have to do another retrieval.

Also, does anyone know how long it will take after the transfer to find out if it worked or not?

Anyone that would have a little insite to this would be great.

Hi Julie-
Congratulations on making it this far!!

I am almost 11 weeks pregnant from my first IVF.

They retrieved 20 eggs, 12 fertilized, but when the 5 day transfer came - only 2 were good. 6 remained for one more day, but it was determined that none were good enough to be frozen.

They put 2 back in, and when I had my first scan it showed that I was pregnant with one baby.

We're thrilled, but I was very disappointed that none could be frozen.

After the transfer, I think it's a 2 week 2 day wait for the first blood test (there's a thread called 2ww with everyone who is waiting for their first test).

Good luck with everything, remember it only takes one great fertilized egg!!

Take Care,
Susan

Hi Julie -
Welcome to the general forum!
With regards to your question regarding time after transfer, most clinics wait 14 days after transfer before the pregnancy test. On here it's called the 2 week wait (2ww). Some clinics have a slightly different protocal (it sounds like your doing blastocysting as there is 5 days between collection and transfer? If so, I think they sometimes test earlier than 14 days - not 100% sure as I didn't have blasto? Maybe one of the other women on here could clarify?)
You're in the right place to ask questions and generally let your feelings out!!

Hi there

Just wanted to say that my hospital test 10 days after a blastocyst (5-day) ET and 14 days after a 2 or 3 day ET.

It is worth remembering that testing earlier than this can give false results so do try not to be tempted by the HPTs.

Good luck with the ET and fingers crossed that everything goes well for you.

Hi Julie welcome to the site.
On my first ICSI I got 11 eggs, but only one was OK for transfer. Shes now 4 years old and called Abigail!
We could only afford 1 attempt so were thrilled that it worked, but our situation changed and last year found the money for another go, so had one more go I'm pg with number 2 and have 5 in the freezer! I made much better quality of eggs this time as the doctors learnt more about me from my first cycle, so dont lose heart it does only take 1 embryo, and the first try is often a 'practice' go for the doctors too!
Good luck

Hi Julie

Welcome to the Site and the best of luck to you with your cycle. The quality of the embryos doesn't seem to follow in determining the result. We've often seen poor embryos replaced, which go on and implant.

Good luck !!

Hi Julie

Congrats to you on coming this far, and for joing this site, you will find this general site very usefull as most of us have gone through the same experience.
From my experience you have to wait 14 days till you can do a test, some clinics allow you to test earlier than others. May I give you some advise, I do not recommend doing an HPT, really does not help during the 2ww.
Why don't you joing the Nov 2ww buddies thread you can chat away to everyone and support each other during your 2ww.

I wish you all the luck in the world and throwing loads of baby dust your way.
