Post by angelhair »

hello am 42 and seeing a re for abnormal cycles. I had a question about temps they were 96 then 97.5 then 95.5 then 97 then back to 96.3. does the dip yesterday mean that af is coming . it has been about 3 to 4 days past suspected ovulation. had globs od stringy cm on tuesday wed cm was barely there(which he said was normal after o has occured) and was looking for a pattern in the cm which would indicate o(which he found) however opk were negative so am confused. i do not know if this matters but i only got about 4 hours sleep the night before i took my last temp thank for the help! dee

Hi Dee

The temperature dips just before ovulation, then rises quite sharply and remains pretty much constant until the last few days before AF (when it does drop again). It's the Progesterone that causes the rise immediately after ovulation (at least 0.2 degrees C - 0.4 degrees F).

Zita West, Midwife suggests that taking the temperature is not the best way of tracking ovulation. She say "A much better way is to become familiar with your own cervical secretions. As ovulatoin approaches, you will have a sensation of wetness and the vagina will feel slippery and wet, with copious amounts of thin, watery, transparent mucus, resembling raw egg white. On finger testing, the mucus will stretch for several centimetres before breaking. This is fertile mucus in which sperm can live usually for up to 72 hours, but sometimes for much longer. They can now move freely through the cervix. Under a micrscope, you would see the long channels along which the sperm swim. Only normal sperm can fit into these channels. Women often worry about sperm leakng out after intercourse, but if fertile mucus is present, sperm will swim through it. The peak day for fertile mucus (directly prior to ovulation) is the last day, when mucus exhibilts its most fertile characteristics. After this, you will quickly feel dry or stickly again. Thicker mucus, caused by a rise in Progesterone, forms a plug at the cervix which serves as an impenetrable barrier."

Hope this helps and good luck !
