Metformin

Post by Anastasia »

I've been on Metformin for insulin resistance associated with PCOS since March 2005. Just had my first IVF cycle (after 9 failed IUIs) and had a positive pregnancy test result today. While it is all very early still, I am thrilled.

My doctor has taken me off of metformin as of today. I recall hearing all sorts of stories of folks who go off during pregnancy and end up miscarrying. My doctor does not feel comfortable keeping me on right now.

Anyone have any advice or their own experiences? I am going to do my best to eat in such a way to produce the results of metformin without being on it-but would love to hear others' stories.

Hi Anastacia,

I too am on metformin. This is my 2nd cycle and my doctor said he wanted to put me on because i had some small signs of PCOS and felt this would help. well it did I'm 6 weeks pregnant now and very excited I still am taking the metformin and baby aspirin until i go in for my first scan which is Friday then they will tell me when to stop along with the rest of my meds. So far everything is going ok but until i see the first scan I won't be more relaxed and then after the first trimester the worrying never ends does it? Have you had your first scan yet if not when is it? I can't wait to find out if it's twins my doctor says it may be based on my high blood levels so early but we'll see. Well take care and I know it's hard not to worry but try to take it easy and relax it will all be ok :D

Hi Girls,

I was asked to take Metformin as well due to slight signs of PCOS. Am 11 weeks and 6 days pregnant now and tomorrow (at completing 12 weeks), my OB/GYN asked me to stop all the medications I was on during my IVF cycle (metformin, progesterone and baby asprin).

At 8 weeks I was asked by my fertility specialist to see my regular OB/GYN and they also gave me a referral letter stating that it was upto the OB/GYN to decide if I needed to continue with the metformin, progesterone and baby asprin ... and my OB/GYN asked me to contine all the medication till the 12th week.

I'm equally keen on finding out if its okay to stop all these medications cos I've heard stories about miscarrying after you stop taking the progesterone, but am not sure about the metformin. Anastasia, you mentioned you'd try to eat in such a way to produce the results of metformin without being on it, not what types of food can help with giving you the same results as that of metformin?

Take care.

Dora,

My understanding is that people with PCOS often have as an underlying issue, insulin resistance, and that metforming is described as an insulin lowering medication. If your insulin problem is fixed it can help get you back on track to ovulate and improve egg quality potentially. While many doctors use metformin to assist with conception, there is a wide variety of practice on continuing metformin during pregnancy. I believe the debate is basically that it has been shown in studies to reduce the event of first trimester miscarriage in women with PCOS who have insulin resistance, but the side effects or long term effects on the baby are not yet known. My doctor, at the sign of the first positive pregnancy test, took me off. Now I am hoping to control my insulin naturally to avoid miscarriage! The only way I have heard to do that is through diet and exercise. This book lays out the diet http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/searc ... 18-3324827

Wanted to hear what others have heard been advised.
