Clomid

Post by NickiMark »

Hi Girls, It's me, this time with a Q. It's not often I ask Q's is it??

Anyway, I might have to take Clomid on my next IUI cycle jsut wated to know more about it....

How is it taken? Injectable? Pills?
When do u start taking it in a IUI cycle? What day? For how long?
Whats in it? What Hormone is it?
How does it work?
Whats it's for, other than stimulating follicle growth?
Can it over stimulate?
Is it safe? Any side effects?

Thanks x x

Nicki,
Clomid is a hormone pill-no idea what constitutes clomiphene citrate though.. basically to stimulate us to produce eggs.
I've been prescribed it from day 2-6 of my cycle and also from day 3-7- basically a 5 day regime and have produced 2 big follies and on one occasion 3 follies.
It is supposed to be very safe when given under monitored condtions.
Personally I didnt react well to it so they switched me to another drug.I started producing cysts when they upped the dosage on my third cycle with clomid.

hope this helps.

Nicki,

No one every tells you this, but drink tons of water with clomid. It does something to dry out your cervical mucous, which doesn't help with getting pg.

Also, there are some emotional side effects. I definitely prefer the puregon to the clomid.

My accupuncturist also told me clomid can thin the uterine wall, so just make sure they are monitoring you closely.

Good luck sweetie.

Hi Nicki,

I took Clomid only once and it was on the 3-7 days. I don't remember any side effects. It is in pill form. I went for scan and I had 3 big follies and did the shot. Went in for my IUI and now have a 15 month old son.

I would use it in a heart beat!!! It worked for me. My only worry was more than one baby when I used it and got a BFP.

Good luck,

Hi again Nicki

I am on clomid, on my 7th try with it and then will give up! I take it day 2-6 as well. It made me a bit moody but nothing major. I have hot flushes but thats okay. also a bit of nausea.
I didn't know about drinking more water so will try that now!

I think it works on your pituitary gland, telling it to make you ovulate or something like that. It has worked with me in making me ovulate but I'm not pregnant yet. However, have heard many success stories with it.

Its pretty safe I think, its very commonly used. However, there has been some research that has shown an increased risk of ovarian cancer if taken for too long. Some docs recommend no more than six months, some go for a year.

As it hasn't worked for me in getting me pregnant, after this month I am giving up for a few months and trying naturally.......no drugs except chinese herbs and acupuncture. My doctor wants me to continue for another 4 or more months but I have decided to ignore his advice due to the risks and the fact it hasn't worked so far.

I think it can overstimulate if on a high dose but they should be monitoring you with follicle tracking anyway and start you on a lower dose. I am on 50mg, the lowest dose and theres not much risk with that.

Clomid

Post by Babysoft »

Nicki,

I am currently taking clomid now and before I switched doctors, I had aobut 3 cycles of clomid. I never heard about drinking more water until now, so I'm happy I read the threat. As far as side effect :? I haven't had any, but if I had to be honest, even if my head increased 3 times its normal size and my skin turned orange, I'm so preoccupied with getting preggers, I probably wouldn't notice/care  I have heard about an increased risk of cancer if taken too long and another thing I've been told is make sure you take both pills at the same time everday..it will help with the follie growth. It has worked for me as far as stimulating my follies, as I said on the other thread, I had 2 follies at 26 which seem to be enormous to me! I didn't get preggers, but I believe that may have been because of closed cervix or something. And as far as cervical mucas..I don't think that really applies in your case (or mine) because the insemination is passed the cervix anyway, so we already bypass cervical mucas. And maybe I'm wrong, but I remember my doctor telling me cervical mucas was another thing sperm had to pay through...which makes the process of natural conception even more difficult. So I really don't understand how not having could possibly hurt :?:

I took Clomid for 6 months (obviously didn't work!) I have to admit no-one told me to drink loads of water and the side effects were horrible for me. Migraines, hot flushes, very bad skin, tempermental (more than normal). In fact if I'm totally honest it nearly put me off ivf - at one point I said to DH that if I was like that on clomid how would I be on the ivf drugs. The ivf drugs are fine - no problems, hot flushes and a few spots but thats about it.
Think long and hard about it - I hope my note hasn't put you off though.
Good luck for whatever you decide.

Hi there,

Clomid is to get our eggs stimulated, its been a while since I have taken it so can't remember. I was prescribed it for 6 months and had to buy ovulation kits etc... but unfortunately it didn't work for me, I do have a baby boy who is 21 months now from our 1st attempt at ICSI.
