No yolk sac

Post by Anastasia »

I swear the hits keep coming with this pregnancy. I am now officially prepared for a m/c. Basically, went in for my first u/s today at 5 weeks and 4 days and while there was a gestational sac (phew was worried about ectopic) there was no yolk sac. Doctor said with my history of an HCG level not doubling and now this, she was "guarded" to give me any hope and that I need to come back in in 2 weeks to confirm. Looks like it may be a blighted ovum (got that from my own research). ARGH!!

Any chance anyone has a similar story?

I am sorry to hear about your latest news. I am not sure what a blighted ovum is? Is there any chance that it will be ok?

Good luck and hoping that it turns out for the best.

Hugs,

So sorry Anastasia.... can't help you there as I never got this far (m/c at 5 weeks). Just wanted to offer my support and tell you I am thinking about you.
Good news that it is not ectopic though. Hang in there....gosh another 2ww seems cruel!

Lots of hugs and PMA :D

Anastasia,
I hope this roller-coaster you're on , ends on a positive note.
I cant help with info- all I know is,that the yolk sac is what gives the baby his nutrition till the placenta takes over..
Sending you big hugs,

Anastasia,

I am so sorry to hear your news, I know how you feel and it is devastating. I went through a similar experience with my pregnancy but I am happy to say my story turned out positive. I don't want to get your hopes up....my doctor was a complete moron and didn't have any experience in my opinion and if it wasn't for another much more competent doctor, I would have sadly lost my healthy baby due to a D&C. I'll try to make this short.

I went in like you at around 5 to 5 1/2 weeks for first OB appointment (keep in mind this is not the clinic we had treatment done at-we moved out of state) but they gave me an ultrasound to confirm pregnancy and see how many babies. Dr. told me, she saw sac but no baby growing. Told me to prepare for m/c but wanted to check my HCG levels just to make sure. To her surprise my levels doubled, so went back in two weeks to see what the deal was. Again the Dr. said nothing had grown and gave us options...either m/c naturally, induce m/c with meds or have a D&C done. We opted for the D&C (many factors where involved to make this decision), but luckily this Dr. was going out of town and referred us to another Dr.

Thank god, this new Dr. wanted to see for himself and double check everything and when he scanned he confirmed the blighted ovum but said there looked to be three other possible sacs. One of them looked to be the same as the first but couldn't tell about the others cause they where so small. He took HCG again which showed to be really high and now informed us of a possible 'molar pregnancy'!! Very confusing time, let me tell you.

Anyway after many tests and a more intense ultrasound at roughly 9 weeks pregnant, they found one live baby with a strong heartbeat! I am now going into my second trimester and things are looking up. But like I said, I don't want to get your hopes up, I don't know your whole story but I just wanted to let you know that I did have a similar experience and there is a possibility that maybe baby is too small to see, that was my case. I really hope everything works out for you but in any case stay strong and take care of yourself. And a second opinion is a blessing....it saved my baby's life!

Hi Anastasia,

I had an scan at 6 weeks due to pain, They could see a gestational sac but no yolk sac or heart beat. The doctor was not even concerned, saying it was probably too early and the next scan I had was at 12 weeks.

I never had HCG measured though so I can't help you there.
Keep up the PMA and I wish you all the luck in the world for the next scan.

I had a blighted ovum discovered at 7.5 wk scan, gestational age of 5.5. Unfortunately they were right. I opted to go naturally, that way if they were wrong, the baby still stood a chance. At 8.5 wks I miscarried my baby. My HCG levels had been more than doubling until the last week, and there was a signifigant drop.

Anastasia-
So sorry to hear your news. Hugs.
I went through the exact same thing last week. My 5 week ultrasound showed a gestational & yolk sac. My 6 and a half week ultrasound only found the gestational sac. I went back two days later to confirm. Doc said the baby should have been easy to see at this point and there was no chance it was small or hiding. It was a blighted ovum. I had a D&E.
I hope things work out better for you. It is absolutely devastating. I try to remember the positives....
In case you need them, please remember that
first, you did get pregnant. I don't know your history, but this was a first for me in over 2 years of TTC. Second, with a blighted ovum my doc assured me that it had nothing to do with me, my health problems (endo) or my infertility. A blighted ovum miscarriage is the most common form and happens to "regular" women all the time. He also said that my placenta and gestational sac were functioning correctly, but that the embryo wasn't healthy. There is every reason to think that I can carry a baby the full 40 weeks. I was told HCG would not be an indicator because with a blighted ovum your body still functions as if it is pregnant. This is why I personally chose to do the D&E, I could not take the pregnancy symptoms without the baby.
I hope your results are better, but remember if the worst happens you are not alone and can always get support on here from women who have been through the exact same things.

Thanks for all your stories. I am going to go see my doctor on Thursday (I had made an apptmt weeks ago so figure might as well keep it). After much internet research and the other doctor's on the team opinion, I am not hopefull, but if I hear/learn anything on Thursday, I will let you know.
