UK: How many embryos replaced?

Post by Mel_P »

Hi Guys,
New to site, so not sure of best place to post this question for a response, but I had an open question for people. I am from Sheffield in UK but living in NZ now for last 5 years. Having my first cycle of IVF here now, (wait lists are long here too ... despite fact no people live here!)

Anyhoo, in New Zealand, they brought in "SET" or single embryo transfer as a new rule whilst I was waiting. The b*ggers@! Which means in woman under 34 they will only replace ONE embryo at a time. Am praying it never gets to another cycle, but what is happening back in the UK??? How many embryos is it the norm to replace at embryo transfer?? Whilst this will vary I know, am curious for any info.

in the UK is you're under 40 then you're alllowed a maximum of 2 embryos to be transferred and if you're over 40 its a maximum of 3. Hope this helps - keep your chin up :D

Jen

Just to update - they are now trying to change it in England to conform with other countries and they are proposing just 1 embryo in women under 38 and 2 in women over 38.

This is only a proposal at the moment and there are many people actively campaigning against any further changes.

Fingers crossed you'll be getting good news in a few days - :D

Hi Mel,

I replied to our consultation document here about the reduction to one embryo - it was the only area I was really bothered about! I hope they don't reduce it! I'm not going to be able to get going until April.

Out of interest, what is the sucess rate at the clinics in NZ, just wondering if there is a reduced rate due to just one embryo?

Best of luck with this 2 ww!

Hey Mel,
In Australia it seems to be up to the discretion of the doctor, some put in one, others two, and some will even put in three..
There is an Aussie / kiwi thread, you'd be most welcome to post there as well for some "local" support!!
Take care

Hi Mel

I didn't realise you are in NZ - I thought I was the only one over here!

Yes it is a bummer that with Government Funded IVF you only get one embie transferred. What I didn't realise until our last cycle was that if your first attempt doesn't work and you have frozen embies, then on your next attempt they will transfer two embryos if two thaw ok. Also if you have frozen embies then the treatment for transfer of those is still classed as your part of your first free cycle. So the more frozen embryos you get the better. Once you have tried with those and if they are unsuccessful then you can go onto your second free treatment. Does that make sense?

I notice you are on your 2ww so you are going to get a BFP anyway soon so you won't need to worry PMA

Good luck!!

Share the booty!!

Post by Mel_P »

Thanks peeps,
Good to know. (Not that I need to right! PMA PMA PMA PMA!!!)

Its kinda frustrating tho that the reasoning behind it (ie risk of multiple pregnancy) is my idea all my prayers being anwsered once and for all and then some.

On the NZ stats, I think clinics here are quoting (average) success rates of 40% (SET) against 47% (DET), but given they havent been doing SET for that long, there must be some fangled way that they are doing the math, maybe its stats on a full cycle which includes any FET if the fresh one didnt work. I've been trying to ignore the detail on stats stuff, I get obsessesed and filled with panic (anyone else know that feelin ;p).

Funnily enough, after I posted this question, I picked up a magazine with a cover story about some woman who had 2 SETS OF QUADS!! From 2 attempts at IVF!!! That woman needs to share some of the booty!! (And give us the name of her clinic!)
