Fertile girls having IVF ??

Post by NickiMark »

If the most fertile person had IVF, would her success be BFP?

what I am trying to say is that sucess rates must depend on the person recieving IVF not the clinic or the Doctors?

Surely if a fertile girl had IVF,(not that she would, but just say she did) Surely she would be pregnant on first go?

I'm not sure Nicky but I would be inclined to think not because even with 'normally fertile' people they still only have a 20% chance of getting pregnant each month - they are still plagued with 'will it implant?' 'will it survive?' 'will there be heartbeat?' (even if they are not aware of it) - only 50% of fertilized embryos ever make it to implantation for the 'normally fertile' population according to the books I've read so I guess IVF just gives us similar chances to the rest of the population and if they did IVF they would still have same chance that we have. What makes you wonder?

On a personal note - are you thinking about IVF next or are you sticking with IUI for a bit longer? Sorry if I'm being nosey, just wondered what the advice was from your clinic,

Hope it all works out for you soon,

Hi Nicki!

I think I know where you're heading with this. Hope this helps.

Right, I had an appointment on Friday. The consultant told me I have a very good chance of getting a BFP with icsi altho obviously he said no gaurantees as I am young, fit, healthy and my blood tests and ultrasound scan show that I am healthy reproductively. Therefore a BFP I think will come down to a few thing. 1) the reason for the infertility ie male factor/sperm (altho in your case, if using donor then that's even better cos that should help even more bein' healthy swimmers if ya know what I mean!) 2) the skill of the surgeon def. comes into it - I think its how well they can transfer the embies that decides success??! I think.

I was told icsi success rates in my unit are about 40%. I was also told it depends on the clientele. He said you can't compare eg. Harley Street with say an NHS clinic in a deprived area (his words, not mine!). Lifestyle has a part to play.

Does this help answer your question??

I have so much going on in my head!!

Dont know what to do, dh has no sperm, we have had 3 iui's now, what does that mean? does that mean I have a problem too, how do the doctors know really? all ive had done is blood tests to check hormones and hsg, waht if it doesn't embed, what if it doesn't fertilise, how do I know that? With IUI the sperm are just let loose to find there own way? I dont understand why my IUI isn't working?

Dh's mates wife has had 3 children, one born april 03 and then 2nd one in Nov 04, sadly it died at 1 day old, then 3rd child born Sept 05.

I mean she must be fertlie, so must he.... look at the dates, child no3 was born 10 mths after child No2, It's crazy!!!

All 3 children were accidents too, doesn't that make u crazy too!!!

Anyway, what i am thinking is, if she had ivf, would she be pregnant? Why cant I get pregnant with IUI and she can get preg 3 times by accident.

I am thinking of IVF, as surely it'll be certain, but like u say will the embies embed? No one knows huh?

But at least I'll know if they fertilise. as with this iui, it's like .....
Have they fertilised? Dont know?
Have the embedded? Dont know?
Which part is failing me?

What should I do IVF or IUI?

Hi Nicki

I am 23, no health problems, no fertility problems.
My Doctor was really confident.
I had 3 embies put back which is many for my age. The 3 embies were good quality, my womb was nice and thick... but I got a BFN...

I understand how must feel after 3 failed IUI, and I would ask myself the same questions... I think you should speak to your Dr, and ask him if you would have more chances with IVF ( the treatment is more invasive than for IUI but it might worth the try...)

hope it helps.i wish you all the best in the world, and really hope you will be blessed with a baby soon

Take care

Hi again Nicki, I'm sorry you're feeling so frustrated and it is annoying hearing of other people who seem to sneeze and they're pregnant! We don't know how many times it happens though (fertilization) and then doesn't implant - that might have already happened for you and you just don't know. The embryo only really has a chance of implanting if it's healthy - I was devastated when my first 4 didn't (first 2 ICSIs) but now I am glad that 'the process' worked as it was meant to. I firmly believe that those embryos weren't healthy enough and wouldn't have survived so in a way it's okay now that I lost them. However, it's easy to say now I'm at this stage - I can still feel the acute sense of panic I used to have as to whether it would ever happen and whether there was something really wrong with me. I think that IVF or ICSI does sound like a positive way forward for you (if you don't mind me saying) because you do get more info at each stage as to whether things are happening as they should. At least (as you say) you would find out for sure if fertilization was occuring and then if cells were dividing normally and if womb lining was thick enough etc etc. It might not guarantee results but it would hopefully provide you with some reassurance that there's nothing 'wrong' with you and that it's just a case of 'when the time's right' everything would happen. Just think there's many 'fertile' couples who spend 6-12 months trying to get pregnant each month so that's like us having 6-12 treatments. Please don't think that it's never goiing to happen - it will - your body's just waiting for that perfect little embryo that's goiing to fulfill all your expectations.

Good luck

Cherylxx

Nicki

As far as I know I’m normally fertile. I had some tests done (not all though) before they found out DH had bad sperm count (they had presumed it was me because of age - I’m 36 and DH is 32).
My ICSI was BFN.
Like the other ladies said, even with natural pregnancies with “normal” couples the percentage of embies that implant are quite low.

Hope you get some answers soon from your clinic. Good luck

The reason we're doing IVF is down to 'male factor'. I'm pretty ok they think. However, our doc said our options were IUI or IVF, but she said go straight for IVF as the chances of success were much higher. You're taking out as many elements of risk as possible as you know for sure that the egg fertilises, the only risk left is that the embie doesn't implant or develop.... worth thinking about. GOOD LUCK in whatever you decide.

Hi again Nicki doll,

I'm gonna possibly have the same Q as you if DH's SSR is -ve and we use donor ie. should we do IUI or IVF?? As already mentioned, I think IUI didn't work, possibly because it would be the same chances as anyone ttc'ing naturally ie. 20% chance which means it could take upward of 5 mths for a normally fertile couple therefore in our circumstances that would be like 5 tmts. I think IVF sounds like a good idea as you're embies and sperm will get as much help as poss. I've got an apt at IVF clinic in 9 days time and I'll be asking the very Q of IUI v IVF incase we have to use donor. I'll let you know what he says ok.

Keep smiling girlie, I'm with you!! 8)

Nicki

I'm just wondering if you shouldn't ask about a medicated cycle first and try with 2 or 3 follicles instead...

Its alot less invasive, and like the other gals were saying, "normal" couples take a few tries usually to get pg anyways.

Good luck.

nick i think you should do ivf!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

but you should talk with your ivf doc.
maybe they can come up with some ideas..

also maybe by doing ivf they could tell what is going on with the sperm and your eggs..
i know i wouldnt have been pregnant twice if it wasnt for ivf!!!!!!!!!

i didnt find it that bad.
i had a great doc and wonderful nureses.

you hang in there

Hiya, Interesting question, and one that scares the hell out of me. What does it mean for us girls that arent fertile then! That we have less chance of it working? Its all so horrible and scary to think about, but am on a bad day as am having my test date tomorrow, but already know its a negative! (HPT) So am panicking that it might never happen for me! ttc for 5-6 years and going crazy slowly with it :( tubal damage, so I guess a chance of toxins that mean implantation could never happen until i have tubes removed :( there I go planning on doom and devastation again!

From my limited reading on the subject, some of the things that have to happen for IVF to work are really chance basis. Each embryo has a 50% to 70% chance of containing genetic characteristics that will allow it to develop beyond 2-3 day 6-8 cell onto to blastycyst (5-6 day implantation stage).

One of the discussions I wanted to have with my doctor was if transferring on day 5 could improval success rates. Afterall it means an embyo that 100% has made it to that stage has been transferred rather than one with 50 - 70% chance of developing. It doesnt cover off whether the embryo implanting, but it does mean you know youve got past one hurdle already.

In NZ this is still something in development, and something they only offer to couples who produce lots of healthy embryos that they can choose from.

My experience of IVF has been positive (despite the result of course!). The drugs were easy, and a few invsive moments, but honestly at this point there isnt much of anything I wouldnt try if it would improve my chances!! Sorry to hear of the big sh*tty BFN. I wish you all the luck with whatever you decide :)
