Hi Nicola,

Just started doing this myself

The thermometers are pretty cheap - make sure you get the one marked BBT - they are more sensitive.

I chart manually and I've been charting online at Fertility Friend

Let me know if you want more info.

p.s. you need to chart after at least 3 hours sleep, same time each day, basically while you're still in bed, because other activities affect your temp.

I just bought mine from the drug store... but you could probably look online.

Usually you start charting from your day 1, but if you wanted to start now, then you have some basis for comparison when you start your next chart.

Nicki,

I did the whole charting my cycle thing for 6 months prior to finding out about DH's azoospermia. You could start today because you're pre ovulation but you'll get a better idea if you start on day one. I bought a thermometer from Boots. You need to take at the same time or near to, each day - best when you wake up - whilst lying down and you can't have less than 3 hours sleep prior to this or for example, you can't get out of bed to go to loo for at least 3 hrs before cos getting up raises the temp. After ovulation there should be a noticeable temp. shift, where your BBT will be higher. It will stay high until day 1 of your next cycle. Because the 2nd part of your cycle (luteal phase) stays approx the same length every time and is not affected by stress or external factors if you have 18 high temps it is almost certain you are pregnant ( normal luteal phase is between 12 - 16 days in length). I too charted on www.FertilityFriends.com . You are also best to chart you're cervical fluid to tell you when you are fertile (because once you're temp has risen you have already ovulated) altho that won't matter if you're purely doing it to chart the length of the luteal phase. An excellent book to get, which explains heaps and heaps is Taking Charge of Your Fertility by Toni Weschler. I read that cover to cover when DH and I began seriously ttc'ing.

Good luck honey! :D

Hi Nicki

I did this for my last IVF in inconjunction with acupuncture. My acupuncturist really wanted to know the info as well and said she could gain a lot of info from it. Have you tried acup. with your IUI?

Personally I found it really stressful. I am not the best in the mornings and I tend to half wake up and go to the loo with my eyes still closed and then curse myself as I have forgotten to take my temp. You need to take your temp lying down. Once you have sat up its too late. I use to ask DH to try and remind me but that was no good he is as hopeless as I am in the morning!!! My mum let me into a secret that when dad and her were trying for me (3rd child but biggish age gap between me and DB) dad would nudge her awake and then stick the thermometer in her mouth when she was virtually asleep! Maybe that would help you?

I found it certainly took over my life even more and it was an added item to be concerned about.

Good luck with it Nicki.

Nicki, I swear by charting my BBT. I started when I was trying to conceive naturally and then gave up for a while once male factor was discovered. I now do it again because for me it’s great to see evidence (from the raise in your temp) that I ovulate and my acupuncturist finds my charts very helpful to him.

Boots sells a special fertility diary and thermometer which explains everything. You need to start on Day 1 – ie the day your AF comes. Take your temp first thing in the morning – without getting out of bed. So the thermom needs to be close enough for you to reach. Ideally take your temp at the same time (things like illness, flying/jet lag etc can affect the charts). After you have ovulated you will see a rise in temp – I go from 36.1 up to around 36.6. On the day or 2 before AF comes, the temps come down slowly, and on the day AF arrives my temps crash back to 36. Won’t be like that for everyone (I have a very regular cycle) but I find it very useful, if only to tell me when I can expect AF.

It can’t really tell you exactly when you ovulated and exactly when AF will come – that really depends on you and your cycle. Some women, who have irregular cycles, will find tracking BBT absolutely no use to them whatsoever. It’s really more helpful to people like me, who have very regular cycles. I use it to check when I have ovulated and I can then add on 14 days to guess when AF will be due. On the day the temp drops I know that my AF will come that day, so I’m ‘prepared’. It also tells my acupuncturist a lot about my cycle, ie my luteal phase etc. For eg, he can tell if you have problems just by looking at the temps and the chart that results. If you have a regular cycle, charting over a few months will give you a good idea of what you ovulate so you can plan accordingly (if you are able to conceive naturally).

It might be worth a visit to an acupuncturist (one who deals in fertility) as charts can really tell them a lot about you.

You could start by googling but the acupuncturist needs to be one that specialises in fertility. Or ask at your clinic – sometimes they can recommend someone. Also ask here for people in your area or check another website – Fertility Friends. This has separate threads for most of the main UK clinics or hospitals and often someone being treated at your clinic can recommend. I found mine via the internet but checked with Fertility Friends and he came up with brilliant references (in London).
