Poor response

Post by debb »

Hi all,
Hope anyone can help me with a few questions. Ist cycle IVF was abandoned today as poor response to the Puregon. Was on 350 units for a week then it was increased to 450 for 3 days. No good, still no response. Blood poor too (though up to now has been OK). Just spoke to the clinic and will start again after af at a much higher dose and maybe different protocol. Anyone any experience of anything similar? Or is this the end for us? Can increased doses work?
Many thanks for reading this.
Debbie

Dear Debbie
I am so very sorry about the terrible blow you were dealt today. I have never experienced an abandoned cycle and can not begin to imagine how devastated you must feel. I'm afraid I can't help with the dosage of your Puregon either (sorry I am not being much help!)but I do know it takes differring doses and differing lengths of time to achieve an appropriate response in many women so please do not lose hope. I would take your cue from the clinic who sound keen to re-try another cycle. After I got over the huge disappointment of my first failed cycle I tried telling myself that the first cycle is really a learning curve - for you and your team - it's an opportunity to ACTUALLY see how YOUR body responds rather than dealing with facts, figures and endless "what if's".
So try to see that much has been learned already. I am on my third cycle of IVF and each time we use newer/different drugs and tweak the cyle here and there - in the hope you can "better" the last time! I know that's difficult, I understand your disappointment - sadly so do many others.
Good luck to you, I will be thinking of you.
Lorraine. xxx
Hi Debbie

Sorry this cycle has n't worked for you. You are bound to feel numb and shocked it just is n't fair.
I have n't had an abandoned cycle myself but I do know it can be quite common especially on your first go. The clinic will have learned alot from this attempt and hopefully next time will get the right protocol.
Alot of women have to use higher amounts of drugs and go on to have perfectly healthy pregnancies.
Try not to worry too much (I know that is impossible but still...) make the most of the next few weeks to get as healthy and rested as possible and hopefully it will be completely different next time around. Best of luck and let us know how it all goes. Gracexx

Hiya

The same happened to me 3 months ago. I started a long protocol and at my first scan they only spotted 1 or 2 follicles, so i called for blood result in the afternoon and the nurse explained that the doctor wanted to abandon, no response. After crying and crying, I kept telling myself, they are only abandoning for my own good, its in their interest too. They could have ripped me off and took me all the way, but hey no, the put the flags up and start again. I then changed to a short protocol (12days) and managed to produce 4 eggs on much higher dose, but only managed 1 embie. Got negative result last friday.

So I am now going back on Monday for a review to see what he suggests next time. Still worried though!

Good Luck, you are not alone, it happens to quite a few women. The doctor couldnt really explain why to me, Just that everyone is different.!

Hope you produce loads of eggies next time.
karenx

Hi debbie

Like Karen I just had my first failed IVF. I appeared to respond reasonably OK to the drugs - got 7 follicles altho' in the end only 5 grew to good size, but at egg collection they only found 1 egg. I was on 4 amps Menopur and short protocol. My nurse told me that for people with low ovarian reserve (have you had FSH tested?) there is a newer protocol which involves no sniffing at all - in other words they work with your natural cycle - and inject stims into stomach on 3 occassions every other day during follicular phase - nurse does this at the hospital. So, maybe you should ask about that...I am certainly going to if we do IVF again.

Hope this has helped a little and sorry that they cancelled your cycle but as the others have said, the first attempt is mostly a learning curve for all concerned.

Take care and good luck for the future
Helen
