Flying - any advice?

Post by Vickyp »

Hi all

I know we have had this topic before but I just wanted to check if anyone had any do's and don'ts about air travel. I'm only going to Rome so not far but thought I'd ask anyway. Love Vicky

The only thing I can pass on is what my Midwife and GP both said - make sure you walk about as much as possible and drink loads of water.

Hope this helps - enjoy Rome

Check with your insurance company that you're covered - some have different cut off dates for travelling when you're pregnant.

Also, take a list of 'forbidden foods' with you so that you can check up on things while abroad - remember Palma Ham isn't allowed.

And make sure your DH carries the bags - no heavy lifting for you!

Flying is OK but depends on how gone are you. I know ur worried bout the altitude but i think this wont hurt the fetus (I'm not a doctor) but we asked this same question to my Fertility Doc.

i went on a cruise when i was 19 weeks but joined the ship from a flight. i went from manchester to america and then back again when i was 22 weeks.
i normally sit by the window but i sat on the isle seat so i could get up and down more easy i made sure i went to the tolet often even if i didnt feel like going its not much fun having to stand and wait to go when ur busting.i also drank loads of water i can say i found it very uncomfortable as my back ached more than it normally does on a flight but we did go a long way
i also wore a slogan tshirt telling everyone i was a mummy to be and it made great conversation with the airstaff and they kept asking was i ok.
when we was on are way home we had to que to go into passport control and one of the staff asked me how many in my party so i said 2 and a half and he opened the ropes and let us thru to the front ...after talking to the other people after they said they qued for 4 hrs so that was a help ...try it no harm in asking they can only say yes or no
good luck and enjoy rome

Hi Vicky!
Enjoy your trip! I traveled to Hawaii at the beginning of my 2nd trimester (about a 6 hour flight from Colorado). My doctor gave it the okay. His recommendation was to either walk around a lot (helps avoid blood clots in the legs---something pregnant women are more prone to), or if it wasn't convenient to walk to do ankle rotations to keep the blood flowing. I ended up doing lots of ankle exercises since I was in a window seat. Also drink LOTS of water. This helps in two ways ... keeps you hydrated and gets you up and walking to the bathroom!

Most importantly enjoy every minute of your vacation! Relax and make the most of the time alone with your DH. Everything changes after the baby arrives =)

Hugs,
Kelly
