Hello to everyone,
I'm new to this site and wondering does anyone out there know where I can get my hands on a copy of Prof Robert Winston's IVF Revolution?
I have searched everywhere: Eason's, Waterstone's, Hogges-Figges, Amazon/ABC/Ebay.com, the library. Just about everywhere and everyone.
I want to read it before my first IVF appointment in November 2003.
Am told it is a good read. Has anyone read it and was it helpful or not.

PS: I live in Ireland, commute between Dublin and Belfast, in the space of four months I have lost a baby to ectopic pregnancy, been told my tubes are useless and my only chance of motherhood is IVF.

Many thanks in anticipation
KJ
Hi KJ,

Try Amazon on www.amazon.co.uk and search for it by name. They seem to have an amazing selection of IVF/Infertility books.

Hope your appointment goes well.

Love Allison
xx

Hi KJ

I had the same prob as you re trying to get hold of that book. Waterstones and WHS both told me that it was out of circulation, during which time it is being updated. I have been going in and asking for 18 months, absolutely desperate for it because its meant to be "the" book to have. Sorry, haven't got any suggestions, for finding it, other than to find out which publisher it is and perhaps writing to them to find out when it will be back in circulation. Surely they must realise that the book is an absolute bloody must-have for thousands of women! Bloody Mad, but we won't take it out on Professor Winston because we love him, eh - he's an absolute genius!!!

LOL and loads of luck to you in your quest for the book and even more so for a family.

Rachel
x
I HAVE GOT IT!!!!

It is literally sitting on the desk beside me now.

If you would like to borrow it email me your details and I will post it on to you, but if you are after a copy for youself keep searching or post a request on Amazon - I got mine on there 2nd hand, there must be loads of people who bought it, have had success with IVF and have it cluttering a bookshelf at home luckily never to be read again - it's worth a try!

If anyone has got any other books they suggest reading please could you post the titles etc?

Good luck KJ, thinking of you.

D x

Gila and all,

I will copy type (excuse any typo's!) the back page so you know what it is all about, but basically it goes through the whole process, common problems, techniques etc - here goes..........

What is IVF?
Who is suitable for treatment?
How much does it cost?
Where do you go for it?
What other infertility treaments are available?
What the the ethical implications of infertility treatment?

If you need to know the answer to any of these questions, then you need to read this book.

Written by an internationally respected gynae and expert on infertility, The IVF Revolution is a comprehensive, user-friendly guide for all those thinking about, or currently involved in, treatment for infertility.

All the techniques that are now available for assisted reproduction are examined - from IVF to donor insemination, together with their success rates and respective costs, so that you can assess your own chance of success.

In addition, the book provides an overview of recent scientific developments such as the DNA identification of sperm which can allow parents to pre-determine the sex of their baby; it also covers such ethical issues as the cases of Mandy Alwoood and Diane Blood whose hard-won legal battle gave her the right to conceive using the sperm of her dead husband.

Lord Robert Winston is Prof of Fertility at the University of London and Director fo the Infertility Unit at the Hammersmith Hospital. He presented the major television series The Human Body for the BBC, the award-winning series The Life in Their Hands and more recently, the BBC series The Secret Life of Twins. His infertility unit has been the subject of a recent primetime series, Making Babies.

Price £9.99 (paperback)
Went to print 2000.

Hope that helps!

D x

Hi KJ
As already said the book is excellent - it's called the "oracle" in our house!!!
You have had lots of info about it - you can order from any bookstore - I got mine from Waterstones - ISBN Number 0-09-181682-3 mine was issued 1999 - but there is likely to be more updated/new edition by now.
Happy reading!
Lorraine.

ps I have just heard on the TV that next week's Panorama (Sunday 10pm BBC) is doing a programme about IVF - "the baby business" - I have no idea if it is a positive look at the issue (probably not!!) - or if it will drum fear into everyone going through it so - I'm NOT ACTUALLY recomending it - just incase!!
