We have been trying for 4 years and found infertility due to low sperm count. We were told to go with IVF.
We tried our first attempt of IVF with ICSI couple of months ago. Didn’t work with 2 eggs. Had no idea why it didn’t work..
We are going to try transferring 3 eggs this time with ICSI and assisted hatching. Our doctor told us that they wont transfer more than 3 eggs. Is that common?
Today is the day for retrieval and going to be transferring on Monday, Jan 9 06.
We are hoping and praying..

2nd IVF with ICSI and assisted hatching on Monday!!
The goal is to transfer 3 high quality embryos each for women age under 35 or between 36-39. However, 3-4 embryos transfer for women who are older (40+). This is the standard practice for USA. It is common to transfer 3 embryos since you are still young (under 35). One of the reasons is to prevent multiple births and as well as to keep the risk down for both the mother and fetus.

I also had my 1st IVF and transfered 2 embryos and it did not work (not sure why ??). In UK we are allowed only 2 embryos at a time to avoid the risk of multiple births.
I am also hoping to go for my 2nd IVF attempt in Feb / Mar 2006. When I meet my consultant I am going to ask about assissted hatching. Please let me know how this works.
I know how you must feel now.. I went through the same thing and it is nerve wrecking. Please try and be positive and I wish you all the very best !! I hope the results are positive..

Our doctor told us that assisted hatching would help "thinning" the embryo shells, so that the embryo could go out of the shell and implant. Usually, they do it only for 40+ women, but they recommended since we can try something different this time and hope things would work out. It is not a big ticket item (cost US $300), so we agreed provided it doesn’t hurt the embryos in anyway..

my specialist won't even transfer 3. i think he might for women over 35 - but hasn't given me the option. i think i read that embryos transferred thru ivf can divide again like any one having identical twins + that this was more likely with icsi. my guess was that makes them limit what they put back.
i'm less sure about this but i also have the impression that if something goes wrong for one of the developing embryos - it can sometimes cause problems for the others that are in there. i think it might mess up the lot at times? these are only my impressions. do check it out with your specialist.
i haven't heard the term "assisted hatching". if you could tell me about it that'd be great.
