The men...

Post by JenC »

This is kind of personal and I apologize...but this is our first time with IVF and I asked my husband earlier if he thinks that he will have a hard time....producing a sample on the day of ET and he said that he really didn't know....I told them they will probably have videos and mags in the room...so, um, will they??

Hi JenC!
Funny this topic came up. My husband was not sure he would be able to produce anything on the "big" day with all the pressure and people waiting for him, (ER tentatively scheduled later this month). So, we decided to go to the lab a couple weeks ago to have a sample frozen. Now our lab is over an hour away due to heavy traffic so we had to do it there. This was in Highland Park, IL. There were magazines, not sure about videos. But I was there, so he didnt need the extras. It was very quiet though in that room. My husband was as tense as can be. I was desperately trying not to laugh everytime he shook his head saying he couldnt do it. The lab staff was right behind a panel...so I turned on the water faucet really loud. Then dimmed the lights to create a mood, trying to help us forget where we were. It helped and there were times when I was kind of loud. But I know the staff hear and see all kinds of things, so it was not new to them. I whispered in his ear to listen to my voice and we went from there. He was able to "perform" in less than a couple minutes. My suggestion is to work to help him forget where he is.....mental before physical.

 Hi JenC

My husband asked our woman doctor at the FIRST consultation if he would be given magazines or videos-----------i nearly died. She thought it was so funny, we all get along great now and she is always very relaxed with us.
Anyway after much worry, on his part, about how he would get on he was allowed to produce his sample at home as we live so close.
Most places seem to allow this if you live within an hours drive of the hospital, if not then it's off to the little room with only a mag, no videos or dvd's in our hospital.
Good luck

Love Jen x

When DH had to provide his sample, they provided magazines but no videos. I asked him if it was difficult but all he said was: "the nurses hands were cold".

Ha!!!!

Now they wouldn't would they?!!!!!!!!

By the time it came to "the big day", DP had already had to do this a couple of times for the NHS and then private tests so it wasn't too bad.

The first time, when he had to take a sample to the nhs hospital which is only 10 minutes away was the funniest. He said he managed to produce a sample Ok, and got to the hospital in plenty of time, but then found himself in a slow queue of men giving their sperm in! So, DP shouted loudly from the back of the queue "Oi! Get a move on! Mine are dying back here!"

Jen - I hope you got enough info to help DH. At the very least, you should have got a couple of laughs (I did!!!).

My DH seems to have no probs there, which is a concerns in itself! A few days of abstenance before hand usually helps (not too many days though, cos you want it 'fresh').

Good luck!

No magazines or videos at our clinic. But they have a nice enough room with calm and privicy. We are also allowed to take it from home, as we live less than 30min away.

Hi ,

My DH was also wondering whether he would be able to perform. As ours was transport IVF, his main focus was to get the eggs to the embryologist. The hospital room had magazines, which was good enough for him. He said that he was nervous before he went into the room and also a bit embarassed to ask the nurse.

Thank god everything was fine..I am sure all will be well for you DH too. It may be best to check with the hospital in advance though.

The nurse told us today that there was a room and both of us were too embarassed to ask if there would be anything.

Thanks guys!

Hehe - what a funny topic!

Well for me it was very nerve racking on this 'Special' day when it was my turn to come up with the goods :)

My wife was in a room of her own which had a toilet and on the day the nurse came in handed me TWO jars and asked me to produce the first errr what can I say :) :) first spurt in the 1st jar and the rest in the 2nd. I seriously went into panic mode and the colour of my face drained to a pure sickly white! I was like how can I aim it so quick into each one and what if miss the jars lol :) Looking back now it was quite comical!

Anyway the nurse handed me this folder which had magazines in it and said you can go in the toilet here in the room if you like and put a Do Not Disturb sign on our room door and walked out. All I will say is at this point my wife and I looked at each other and she gave me a really big grin! Lets just say with the missus around it turned out to be very easy ;)

The same scenario happened on the next 4 attempts and on our 5th IVF attempt I was actually marched to a room which was the size of a cupboard and thankfully it had some videos and magazines!

Next door from this room was also a kids play room for the ward and I am glad that the nurse did not get mixed up and lock in me that room or I would have been stuck in a room with Tweenie videos and Noddy books!

In conclusion tell him not to worry and despite the fact your nervous you overcome those on the day with ease. Each time up to egg collection we stopped intercourse 2 weeks prior to this and believe me that helped a great deal too!

Hope this helps and sorry I was a tad too graphic :)

Oh trust me, I don't mind "graphic". LOL

Well, my husband and I snuck into the "collection room" when no one was looking. They DID have movies and a few magazines. They had a big black leather couch and a tv, all I could think about was , "boy wouldn't it be cool to take that light the forensic scientists use to look for semen and put it in this room???
