Threatened Abortion -- Any Info/Encouragement Appreciated

Post by tsippora »

I had my first scan today (5 weeks 5 days). Though they detected a sac and a pole, the size was much smaller than expected (i.e. it looked 4-5 days earlier than it is). They told me to come back in 1 week for another scan, but things are not good. I had an HCG test also and will get the results tomorrow. They warned the test is not valuable at this stage since the range for "normal" scores is so large. If it comes back extremely low, however, they will know I've lost the baby. Otherwise I'll have to wait for a week (unless I guess I start bleeding). Have had no symptoms of pregnancy so far, unless you call slight cramping a symptom. My early HCG numbers were strong and doubled normally. Does anyone know anything about the odds here? The doctor said they weren't high, but refused to name a number.

HI!
Sorry you are having to go thru this..
5 weeks 5 days does seem to be a little early to have a first scan to me, though I guess your clinic knows best..
Keep the faith..
I dont know anything about odds, but do know that positive thinking does help, so keep talking to your embie
Good Luck for your hcg numbers..

I second Smitas words - best of luck, I really hope things work out for you. I really don't know about odds etc but scan sounds really early to me too. It must be agony but I guess there's no alternative to just waiting and see what's happening. Perhaps you could try and distract yourself for the next week - fill your time with lots of treats to try and take your mind away from the anxiety of the wait? Good luck, look after yourself,

keep hanging in there,
it is so hard and it is not fair at all.

but there is always hope.

and please dont look at it as a abortion. if there is no heart beat they will most likely ask if you want a d&c or wait and have a mc.

trying to cope

Post by tsippora »

Thanks for your kind words, ladies. I agree: "abortion" is such a horrible word but I used it because that's what they wrote down as my diagnosis.

My hcg came back fine for 5 weeks 5 days -- 10,600 -- but I called a good friend who is an infertility doc in another city and she was willing to give me a firm probability that things will end up ok: less than 5 percent. She said anything that goes this wrong so early is not going to be sustainable. I am trying to come to terms with this, but it is so hard after the initial joy. And holding out hope for that 5 percent just makes it worse. Any ideas on how to deal with this?

Even if there was a 1% chance, there is still hope. Try not to get too down or convinced it's the end - put your hands on your belly, close your eyes and talk to your little embryo - believe in him / her. It's a horrible thing to think but if things do go wrong then there will be a reason for it and you can think (whilst incredibly hard) that it's the best thing for your embryo. However - things haven't gone wrong as yet and you still have a chance - don't give that up by giving up. Everyday you are pregnant is a bonus - take yourself out to beautiful places, enjoy lovely food, wrap yourself up in deliciousness and try and keep as open a mind as possible. Statistics and logic are fine to a point but there is always that element of magic and surprise in life that logic can't account for - we hear of the impossible everyday and all the little miracles that people said 'would never happen'. You haven't been given impossible chances though -- you've been given some chance which is important to remember. I know you don't want to set yourself up for a huge fall but try not to go too far the other way - remember you are pregnant right now and whatever happens, no-one can take that away from you. Talk to that little embie - write to him or her and make the most of every day - it'll help I'm sure.

Much love - I will be praying for you,

Cherylxxx

Hi there, you poor thing

You might find it helpful to check out www.betabase.info on their links section they have some good sites on early pregnancy monitoring (one sire ith early ultrasound results etc) and also pregnancy loss - which also describes things that can go wrong, or can seem wrong and then turn ou´t OK.

my Mc last time was an apparently perfect embryo, and later traced to an immune issue, where my body rejected an "apparently perfect" pregnancy. If there i omething worng ith your sweetie, then mothre nature does have this tragic way of dealing with it. Let`s keep our finger crossed that your little on is just a bit slow getting off the starting blocks.

We are there for you, keep posting and let us kno how you are. You are not alone.

hugs

At last, some good news

Post by tsippora »

After the saddest, most stressful week I can remember, I finally went in for my scan and the doctor said the little guy/gal had completely caught up! I'm still terrified of being too happy but yet am really happy! Can't believe it, really: they had told me we needed to be ready to discuss the D&C options.....

Have been feeling slightly nauseous and unbelievably hungry...and embracing the symptoms even as I gain weight! Can't thank you girls enough for the support. Guess it's time to axe this thread and move over to the 1st trim thread!

Hi there

So glad to read that things are looking good - what a relief for you, it's just a shame you had to go through all of that in the beginning.

Take care of yourself and enjoy the rest of the pregnancy.
