IVF/ICSI

Post by MARTEEN »

i have just found this site this morning, i have been reading the topics and comments, i think it is fantastic.

My partner and I want children, this would be his second family and our option was IVF/ICSI as he had a vasectomy over 10 years ago, and then he had testicular cancer 5 years ago and the doctors would not do a vasectomy reversal.

I wish I had found this site last year when my first attempt of IVF/ICSI failed. I was a mess and it would have been a great help to be in touch with people who is going through the same as me and knowing what I was going through, I was not offered counselling but I do feel looking back I really needed it. What a help this site would have been!!! I felt I was on my own, my partner did not understand, it sounds harsh, but I did feel I had no support from him. Anyway, I feel I am now ready to try the IVF/ICSI again this month. I will be ringing the unit tomorrow, with day one of my period date, being 5th July. I am so scared, I hated every minute of the treatment, I felt I turned into a woman possessed, I had permenant PMT, it was horrible, just was not me. The injections I didn't like that, I was putting them in my leg last year, I would like to hear of anyone's comments about the stomach, not sure whether to try that, I am a real baby when it comes to needles. My treatment last time was not very successful, I have a FSH of 9/10 which I was told is very high for someone of my age, being 32, I only had 5 eggs and only 2 of them was any good. I am very nervous because I think this will be our last time, as financially we cannot afford it, I have gone down the route of egg donating, but they would not consider me because of my high FSH.

Please can somebody also explain what short protocol is??

Thank you for taking the time to read my message, I would love to hear from anyone who has any help and advise, or anything I should be taking/doing or not doing and is going through their treatment,

Take care and good luck to everybody, your in my prayers!!

[Edited by MARTEEN on 06-Jul-03 11:39]

HI Marteen - welcome!
Am on my first ICSI treatment (on week 2 of 2ww ), we too have male factor.
This site is a bit of a god send and a bit addicitve too! But theres always someone who can help. PArtners can be wonderful but I think the blokes dont always wana talk about it as much as we do

I have been injecting into my tummy and its totally fine - I mean NO pain at all. Was on Puregeon (no real side effects either, bit pre menstrual but nothing that wasnt like a normal month). Puregeon do a pen - which makes the injectiosn so easy - I would def ask for that if you have the option.

I know what you mean about the going slightly nuts bit....I thought I was ok, but in the last week I have definately NOT been myself.

I dont really know what short protocal either is I'm afraid so no good to you there.

Good luck with everything - keep us on touch.

Cazx

Hi Marteen, welcome to the site, you will soon be addicted to it! And it does help so much to talk to other people feeling the same as you. Although my husband tries to be sympathetic, he doesn't really understand what is going on in my head or why I can burst into tears for no reason at all.
I have a pen for the injections (menopur), like Caz says, which is a lot better than actually seeing a needle going in your leg. I don't know about the stomach, my clinic haven't suggested it, maybe mine is too fat (!)
Re short protocol - my first attempt last year was a long protocol and I started sniffing synarel day 21 of cycle and then injections as well from day 3 of next cycle so was really over 2 cycles. Second attempt was short protocol (with sniffing and injections) and the one I am doing this time (3rd time lucky? - hopefully) started with injections day 3 of period (2nd July) and hopefully egg collection 11th July so really very quick and a lot better I think because it just seems to get you there quicker.
Hope this helps, and good luck
love, Kat x
Me & DH both 41
ICSI #1 - abandoned
#2 - cancelled - DH accident
#3 - 1 transferred, bfn
#4 - 2 transferred, bfn
#5 - abandoned
#6 - no eggs at EC

Hi Kat

Thank you for your reply.

I'm still not sure or understand about Short Protocol?!

The last treatment I did last year was as you said in your message, I started sniffing on day 21, blood test and then the injections, there are obviously other ways and that is shorter span time, maybe I should mention this to Oxford when I speak to them tomorrow.

I wish you luck and please keep in touch and let me know how it goes.

I am already addicted I have been on here all day reading all the messages!

Take Care

Hi Marteen
I'm also new to this site (see my page new to ivf and this site).
We did injections Suprecur which is a needle and Puregon which was a pen like Caz said, they didnt really hurt I had them in my tummy, you've just got to pinch a inch-I have quite a few inches! My hubby injected me which I found to be the best, when I tried to do it I hesitated cos I could feel it, its different when hubby did it he just put it straight in!
Any way I'm now on the 2 ww,got 10 days to go!!
Hope this helps

Keep in touch
Love Gem xx
Hi Marteen,

I did short protocol on both my ICSI attempts. (both failed).
Im 33 next week and DH is 32. I think the difference between short and long cycles seems to depend on the type case involved. I have PCOS and DH male factor. On reading the history of all the postings I think the short cycle seems to be more friendly (if such a thing) it certainly dosent seem to be so long drawn out.. In total its just over a month which involves 2 weeks of injections then EC and ET within 3 days then the dreaded 2ww. I have only injected into the upper thighs which after a while becomes sore from the brusing, bit scared to try the tummy area. I use what they call an autoinjector, just load it up and press the button.

I start my next ICSI middle of August. Im also new to this site and found it fantastic, it;s certainly helped me to carry on again. Thanks girls !!

Good luck to you Marteen and try to stay positive.

TJ x
