Anyone doing a short protocol

Post by jen »

Hi

A bit of history first - 3 failed IUI's; 1 failed IVF; 3 failed ICSI's !!! Last cycle was in Jan/Feb - had lots of great cycle buddies!!!

We've moved clinics and are now at the ARGC - after a few more tests they have started us on a short protocol ICSI. All my other treatments started on Day 21 and it was a good 4 - 5 weeks for EC. This time it might just be 2 - 3 weeks for EC.

Is there anyone else out there doing a short protocol or has done it in the past, anyone pregnant after short protocol treatment. Not really sure why they have put us on this but I'm having loads of blood tests - feel a bit like a pin cushion now.

Best of luck to all of you.

Love Jen xx

Hi Jen
Remember me , I had bad news the same week as you on my 2nd ICSI, I too have changed clinics and they have also put me on a short Protocol , and are awaiting for me to have a low FSH as mine WAS 12 and they knew that in the past I have had a 6.4 and a 10 but last month I had a reading of 12.3 and this month it was 16 well I nearly died , Its never been that high although cause we arnt tested every month how do we know!!!!I cannot go for it now till early September because I have 2 weeks in Spain 2nd August YIPEEEEE well needed I can tell you, but what they have said is that if it is high again then they want to rethink my position which the enevetable will be donor eggs wont it :( Wasnt ready for all that quite yet but I supose it has to be faced. For now I am going to have a holiday enjoy it fully and return stronger to face what is to come.

Good luck

Do you remember Helen G ? well she got a + and we are meeting up for the first time on Monday and Im really excieted.
Trace x

[Edited by Traci on 26-Jun-03 07:43]

Anyone doing a short protocol

Post by Helen GB »

Hi Jen

I have just done my first IVF at Queen Mary's Roehampton and it was short protocol. They seem to use this protocol a lot for "older" ladies and those with FSH issues as it is supposed to get better results. There is no true down reg period....I started stims and sniffing on Day 3 of cycle following base line scan. I was on 4 amps of menopur and 2 sniffs a day. 9 days later I had hsg shot and e/c 2 days later...so is short!
Unfortunately, even though I had 5 good size follicles all but 1 was empty and we just got 1 egg. This fertilised fine and was put back but last week we got a neg result.

If we do IVF again they have said they will try yet another protocol...no sniffing at all. Start stims at start of normal cycle and work WITH your natural production of FSH. Have injections straight into stomach at the hospital. This is most aggresive form of stimulation and should get more eggs.

HOWEVER, i found an article on web (which I have posted yesterday) about the very poor success rates in IVF for women with low ovarian reserve and aging eggs - apparently they become more fragile and the whole IVF process can be too much for them, so even if you get lots of eggs the success rate is so small. I think we will think very seriously before doing it again...we are self-funding as I have one son from previous marriage.

What is the cause of your infertility?

Hope your short protocol brings you success.
Love Helen

I do miss Katie I have to say, she's always so comforting. I've been told that EC will probable be end of next week so very short which is nice in a way - hopefully a change will bring us a nice big +ive result.

Lots of love
Jen xxxx
Hi Jen & all
I have had a failed fertilisation last March and done ICSI last May - got to the end of the 2ww with a -ive blood test. On both cycles I down regged with supercur for 3-4 weeks and then Gonal F for a week or so then the EC. Had a year out and have just been to see my consultant and he has advised that this time I contact him on day 2 of AF and start straight away boosting the eggs with Gonal F for a week and then straight to EC - all seems far too quick, glad it won't be so drawn out but doesn't seem enough time to get my body used to the idea.
So waiting for end of July af the we're offffffffff.

Good luck with all going on out there and will hopefully be joining you soon.

lisa xxx
Hi, im new to this site, my topic heading introduction was 'failed second attempt'.

Im also doing the short ICSI cycle.
I dont know a lot about IVF apart from the one I am doing.
I was on Menopur the first attempt taking injections on the second day of my cycle with 225 IU then approx. day 7 took also Cetrotide 0.25mg injection(leading follicle to be 14mm) until approx day 11 when final Menopur was taking and finished Cetrotide on day 12 when HCG is then taken. Egg collection on day 14 and embryo transfer on day 17. Pregnancy test on day 14 from tfr. (8 eggs collected, 7 injected, 5 fertilised, 2 replaced, none frozen, Grade 1 & Grade 1-2)
Period started on day 11.
Second attempt (2 months later) same drugs, but wasnt responding to the same dosage aswell, so on day 9 increased to Menopur 450 IU (6 amps) which worked but cycle took a little longer approx 2 days more than 1st cycle. Egg collection day 16 when 16 follicles were collected, 12 were eggs and 10 were injected, 8 fertilised and 2 replace (grade 1-2 & 2),not as good as last time and none suitable for freezing) . Period started on day 12.

I do have a few questions flying around like, why havent my eggs been suitable for freezing on both occasions, and why less eggs to follicles on the second attempt.
Throught out all of this I am still working (need to for the cash) but taking days off for hospital appointments and scanning every other day appointments are made as early as possible to go back to work after.
The 2 week wait after tfr I am back to work, hoping to take my mind away from it for a while, but it isnt easy.
How does everyone else cope through out the cycle?

I hope I havent waffled onto much, I did say I was new to the site.

Thank you
TJ

[Edited by TJ on 28-Jun-03 21:53]

Hi guys, nice to hear from you Woppa and Traci.

I was on a short protocol last time and expect to start again on Friday, if AF co-operates! I started on day 2 with Puregon and then also something else (Oxybutin?) on day 5 to stop me from ovulating, EC on day 11 and ET day 13. Collected only 4 eggs but all fertilised, so had two put back and two frozen. Had a weak positive result that then produced a proper period 4 days later. Although I felt a little bloated, I had no other side effects. My consultant said that it produced better results for us more mature ladies.

The scanning/injecting/blood testing is v trying, along with the emotional turmoil......and then there's the 2WW. Oh glee, I can't wait! Good luck, Nicola.

Hi Jen & Helen, wondered how you were...
I am on day 3 of injections for 3rd ISCI attempt at Queen Mary's - short protocol- 6 amps Menopur and no sniffing this time. Mon and Weds next week I get the injections in my stomach so am hoping this produces more follicles than last time as I only had 3. Also on the bright side, they very kindly decided to fund this attempt even though I am 38 on Tuesday. EC due Friday 11th or Mon 14th so very short timescale. I'll keep you posted...
Love, Kat x
Hi Girls

Kat - best of luck with your treatment. Hope it all goes smooth sailing for you - have I you confused with Helen or did you have to cancel treatment cos DH had an accident, hope he's well now if it was you.
Debb - sorry your treatment was cancelled hopefully the short protocol will work for you, best of luck.
TJ - can't really answer your questions, it just seems different every time and for everyone. I think they will only freeze really good quality embies so lots of people don't get them to freeze, we've never had enough to freeze and sometimes not all the follicles have eggs in them and then you'll find some follicles with 2 eggs in them. Just remember you only need one egg to make one embie to make one baby so don't be disheartened. Stay positive and I'll be thinking of you.
Nicola - fingers crossed that AF arrives promptly and you can get started.
I have found the short protocol easier as it's a lot faster - not sure why I was put on short instead of long though. We had EC yesterday (day 15 of period, started drugs on day 2) and got the most eggs this time. 9 eggs, 8 suitable for ICSI and 6 fertilized. The Clinic will ring again to tomorrow to let us know about ET. They have said that if the quality of embies is really good they want to hold out until Thurs but if they're not brilliant they will do ET on Tues.

Bit of a waffle girls - sorry about that but thinking of you all.

Lots of love
Jen xxxx

Hi Jen, yes it was me who had to cancel - DH broke his neck in mountain bike accident in Feb - thankfully not nearly as bad as it could have been though he is not back at work yet. He feels really guilty about the last time as we were so near to EC but at least we are back having another go now. EC should be Friday 11th or Monday 14th, fingers crossed. Also am hoping that DH's lack of work stress may help with sperm quality - you never know...
Best of luck with your ET - keep us posted
love Kat x

Hi again Jen

We did chat before...just about the time Kat's DH had his accident and I think you were taking a break before changing clinics...I was just starting tests etc at QM's.. Had first IVF on short protocol...only got 5 follies and only 1 egg. We have postponed our follow up consultation until end August after my lap but Katie inferred that as I was a poor responder they would probably recommend same protocol Kat now doing for me next time. However, as we are self funding, we may ask about IUI with stims as if I'm only getting 1 egg it seems a better option..DH has brill swimmers so it all depends on wether I have endo or not.

Good luck and keep in touch
Helen
