SCAN AND EMBIE TRANSFER DATES DON'T MATCH

Hiya ladies,

Just posting back to say that I got another scan yesterday and the radiographer saw one definate sac with 'blob' inside it. The other sac that was quite clearly seen on Friday has disappeared, unfortunatley. Anyway, according to my scan yesterday, the sac size is of a 5 week pregnancy, not 8 weeks. I should be 8 weeks today according to my embie transfer (7th December). I have the whole gyn/obs department at my hospital bamboozled. No-one can give me an explanation as to what's going on other than the fact that I have a normal early pregnancy and everything looks well. The radiographer has apparently come across this before with IVF patients, the scan shows an earlier pregnancy than should be according to transfer dates. She and the doctors don't know why this is, 'It's nature and we don't have all the answers as to what goes on in the first couple of weeks' is all they can tell me.

I hope everyone who reads this manages to get their heads round this, I've tried to keep it as simple as I can. I'd be really interested to hear if anyone has experienced this before. I can't be the only one out there that this has happened to.

Please post if anyone knows of similar and if they managed to get a reasonable explanation from medical staff.

sorry to hear that one of your sacs didnt make it but you can take comfort in the fact that everything looks fine with the other. i know you must be tired of this rollercoaster but you've got the strength to get through this.

you've been in my thoughts and i got to thinking about natural pregnancies and date changes. what i mean is sometimes couples who concieve naturally are convinced of one date but the doc disagrees saying that the pregnancy is at an earlier stage. i know a couple who only last week this happened to. nobody really bats an eyelid when this occurs as it's put down to inaccurate date keeping by the couple but obviously when its ivf that 'excuse' goes out the window.

maybe slower development in the first trimester happens more often than we think because, as your doc acknowledged, science doesn't have all the answers, and what is considered 'strange' in ivf is viewed as 'wrong dates' in natural conception.

anyway, the good news is that your doc says everything is going well and i hope that gives you some peace of mind. please try not to worry and keep positive! you're going to have your bundle of joy, maybe just a couple of weeks later than expected!

Thank you for sharing your knowledge on this. I don't know what's going on and I don't really care as long as embie stays put. Just another puzzle in this great big bag of surprises called IVF. The thing that really pisses me off is that the doctor at the clinic wanted me to have a D&C last week, just because she didn't see what she expected. It doesn't bear thinking about and I'm definatley going to report or follow that one up in the next few weeks. People who've just been through IVF don't want to hear the word D&C.

Anyway, I know things aren't going well for you just now, but keep your chin up. It will get better and I believe that all things happen for a reason, we just sometimes don't know what it is at the time. You've got your next cycle to look forward to. That in itself is exciting, even if there's a certain amount of fear as well.

You're in my thoughts every day. I think about some of you every day when I think about all the events that have happened to all of us over the past few weeks.

Well, I'm not going to get all sad and morbid now, but just keeping thinking about what's around the corner.

i am bamboozled too! let me get this right....you should be 8wks preg ( as from transfer) but you lost one embie ... and the scan says you have 1 viable preg at 5wks! wow!

I would just focus on the fact you are PREGNANT (no ectopic) and everything at this stage on the screen looks good.
What was the hcg level? Is it still doubling? it must be or they wouldn't have lsigned you off...and when do you go for your next scan at the new hospital?

Hiya Jen,

Yes that's about right and no-one knows what happened. My hcg levels aren't doubling, but they think that was because of the other embie coming away/disappearing. They are increasing though and they just don't know but hope they will double from here. Got other scan on Tuesday to hopefully find heartbeat. Don't get me wrong, this is fantastic news, but just totally weird!! Like I said earlier, radiographer has seen this before in IVF patients, so I can't be the only one out there. She thought that other possibility was I conceived naturally, but I don't think so as cycle isn't exactly back to normal, have not bleed and the one tube I have left is totally blocked.

Never mind, one embie hanging on is fantastic.

I'm so excited for all you lovely ladies who are starting new cycles soon. Thinking of you all and can't wait to hear all the new cycle news.
