ID TWINS?!?! - BLASTOCYST DIVIDED!!!!

Post by CARINABOO »

Hi Everyone,

I just had my 12wk scan and am in shock as we found out we are having very rare and very high risk identical twins. Apparently our 1 implanted 6 days blastocyst split at around day 9.

At this stage the body has finished building its structure and has completed 1 placenta and 1 sac and doesnt even have a chance to build a membrane between the twins.

This is big news for us. The doctor spent 1hr just trying to determine if they were conjoined (thank god they were not)

The major problem is that the cords are entangled and they are in a high risk position for the cord to be restricted/cut off.

CAN ANYONE tell me if they know abou this?!?!?? IS IT HEARD OF IN IVF? IS IT A RISK OF IVF??
PLEASE - I need to know the bad too so dont hold back. I have read really bad stuff on the net so you cant shock me, i am just trying to understand what we are up against, thats all.

The technical terms are Monochorionic (one placenta) and Monoamniotic (one sac) with complications of no membrane and entangled cord.

p.s. - sorry if you have read this on the pregnant after treatment forum, I am just desparate for feedback!

First of all congratulations on your twins. Secondly, I am sorry to hear of the bad time that you are going through. I have never heard of this, nor can I answer you questions but I am certain that it is nothing to do with the IVF.

I truly hope your pregnancy goes well. The postive thing is that it has been spotted early and the hospital can keep a close eye on you.

Take good care of yourself, i hope you get some answers to your questions.

Lots of love, Sophie xxxxxx

Carinaboo,
Congratulations on the twins! Sorry to hear you are having a high risk pregnancy. I'm not a dr., but I do have an advanced degree, so maybe I can give you an educated guess-type of answer. My understanding is that identical twins are a random event in gestation. It is not genetic, and I would highly doubt it is related at all to the fact that you did IVF. The cords wrapping does present a risk of one or both babies being cut off of their blood supply. I'm not sure how high of a risk it really is. So, it's very probable that your pregnancy will be a success, although stressful. If I was in your position, I would be very persistent about getting regular ultrasounds to check the status of your babies, and once you feel quickening or movement, I would keep track of that movement pretty closely. Good luck with everything. I REALLY, REALLY hope things work out for you and you have those two beautiful, HEALTHY babies in your arms soon.

Carinaboo - Congratulations! I hope everything works out - I don't know anything for advice...but just wanted to let you know I am sending loads of PMA your way.

Did you go to Sydney IVF? We are about to start tmt at Sydney IVF, and my Doc there told me (as kelly said), that twins are completely random, and not genetic, but she did tell me that IVF pregnancies have a higher chance of producing identical twins (i think she said something like 1%, and around 3% with IVF). That is one reason why they prefer to only transfer 1 blasto, because there is a chance of triplets if you transfer 2 & 1 splits.

When is your next scan? I will keep all my fingers crossed for you....
