IVF for No 2

Post by bina »

Hi everyone,
I used to come on the site quie a bit in 2004 when we were unbelievably lucky to conceive on our 1st IVF attempt. Since our little girl was born I've been too busy to log in really.
But we have just started another cycle of IVF, hoping we might be able to have a brother or sister for Lucy. I joined the Jan/Feb buddies on the general forum, but somehow I feel a bit of a 'cheat', because we already have one amazing miracle at home. It feels quite greedy to be trying again, especially when so many people go through a lot worse experiences than we did (and have to try a lot more often...) So in a way it doesn't seem fair at all hoping we might be so lucky again - on the other hand I feel so strongly about having more than one child that I desperately want this treatment to work!
So hope you don't mind me posting on here, just in case there's someone else going through a similar thing?
I've just done the downregging and started stims yesterday. So imagine my EC will be either Friday 3rd or Monday 6th, if we get that far....
Oh, even now the whole thing is just such an emotional rollercoaster....
Anywone out there going thorugh it too?
Hope all babies, toddlers and kiddies are well - as are mums+dads?
Very best wishes,
bina

Bina, I totally understand. We were first time lucky with DD and then had 6 tries that via 1 cancelled tmt, 2 fails, 1 m/c and 1 ectopic all ended in a -ve. I felt bad for talking about it on the main board but my wish for a 2nd child was in fact stronger than my wish for a 1st as I knew just how good it all was.

DO NOT feel guilty. I know how it feels but the last person I had this 'conversation' with on here was Susie who'd been 1st time lucky and she was 2nd time lucky too! That's a great precedent!!

Good luck with your Jan/Feb cycle.

I know exactly how you're feeling, Bina, except that I already have two children so at times feel even more guilty because I know how hard people like Debra have been trying for a second baby. But as I see it, if we didn't have fertility problems we wouldn't suffer any guilt for wanting more children so why should we feel like that when we've already been through the heartache of thinking that we'd never have children?

We're not going through treatment at the moment but are waiting for a referral to come through before we go again so it shouldn't be too long.

Good luck with it all.

Thank you Debra and Jules,
I hadn't actually thought of it from the 'normal' perspective ie someone without fertility problems wanting a second or third child - and you're of course totally right! So why should we feel guilty for wanting a sibling for our first born? It's so true!
Debra, my goodness, you've been through the mill! I admire your persistence in trying, not sure I'd have the stamina (and DH definitely wouldn't! He hates IVF, not our outcome of course, but the process and how it affects me/us)...so sorry it didn't work out. But it sounds like you've made your peace with it? How and when did you know it was time to stop?
We agreed before we started this cycle that it would be the only attempt we'd go for and just accept that we'll 'only' - which is truly amazing as it is - have one child. However, I do not know what I will feel and want if we get a BFN, so I'm not saying anything for sure.
I just keep thinking that nobody could possibly be so lucky to hit the jackpot first time AGAIN....so Susie's story does sound amazing - fingers crossed big time! But somehow it would just be too good to be true, surely!
Jules, hope you get your referral soon! Let us know when you start!
Thanks again to both of you for your empathetic replies - much much appreciated! My parents are coming over on Sunday so they're available to look after Lucy whilst I go through EC and ET the week after (got the timing slightly wrong, so they're here for much longer that intended....)
All the best and love to your little ones!
Best wishes,

HI Bina,
Same here (almost)! I have a wonderful 3 year old girl and I am on my Gonal F for a sibling for her. I am actually doing this for her because i think how importnt it is to have somebody to share life events with (look at our journey!). She deserves the world and I will go through all this again for her.
My egg collection is around the same time.
I hope my body recognize being pregnant, that's all i can wish...
But I must say that this journey is sooo much easier knowing she is home waiting for me.
Good luck and God bless.

Good Luck to you Bina.

After much soul searching and wishing we would never have to go down that road again, we have an appointment with our clinic on Monday.

I'm getting cold feet a little though...

Know what you all mean about joining the other board again - I feel like it would be cheeky as I never have time to post any more.

Hi everyone,
Thanks so much for your words of wisdom and support! Nobody really understands unless you go through it yourself, do they?

Zed - how did your appointment go? Are you going ahead? Have you had all the tests done again in preparation? Let us know! It's still a tricky journey, so fingers crossed whichever way you decide to go.

Susan - how lovely of you to remember! Thank you so much! Hope you are doing well!

Laura - good luck to you too! How far are you now? Yes, I agree it was easier this time, I almost have little time to think about it all, as our toddler keeps me busy enough! Also, knowing what's ahead in terms of side effects made it a lot easier (also for DH...) Yes, of course one of the reasons to go through IVF again is to have a sibling for Lucy so she can share things with someone....

Well, had EC on Wednesday; they got 6, which I was quite worried about, because it was less than last time (got 9 last time) and my consultant had siad he was hoping to get more than 9....anyway, 5 fertilized with 4 4-cell embies and 1 2-cell emby. Then had ET on Friday when they put back the best two 4-cell embies. Now it's back to the awful 2ww! I have been so superstitios and keep doing the same things I did last time, so I don't have to regret having done anything 'wrong' in case it doesn't work!

Oh well, still 10 days to go until prgnancy blood test - time is standing still again...! Laura, hope you are doing well! Good luck and lots of love to all,

Bina, well done on a successful round. Did you get any frosties?

We can swap tips on how to manage a 2ww with a toddler  SOOOO darn difficult. The not picking up, lifting into car seats, getting plenty of rest stuff are just dreams....

How are you managing? DF works evening every other week so I have real problems when he's at work. MIL came round the first 2 nights after ET to help, DF was then at home and will be until Thursday, when he goes back. I'm on my own then. I'll keep carrying her to a minimum and see if I can persuade her to get into the car seat alone but that doesn't normally work....wish me luck!

Debra,
So when's your test date? Mine is 22nd Feb, which can't be soon enough.

Sounds like you've got some good support there though to hlep with the 2ww? Do you lift your daughter at all? How do you manage?
Well, I'll only have had 3 days or rest and then it's back to normal re picking up the little one (she weighs about 9.5 kilos), getting her into the highchair, into the car seat etc. My mum was here from Germany until Saturday (day 1 after ET-she had been here for 2 weeks, because we thought it would all happen a lot earlier, but AF was late, i responded slowly to stims, etc), then over the weekend DH has been doing all the lifting (literally!) and tomorrow he'll be taking her to nursery and picking her up, feed her and take to bed. But then he really has to catch up with his job in Reading (we live in London), so I'll be taking her and picking her up Tue+Wed and then it'll all me, as I only work three days a week. I just really really hope that the first 3 days are the ones that matter.....any tips on how to reduce the pressure on that precious tummy? I was thinking of moving the changing mat onto the floor and just do it all on the floor (if the little one lets me, nappy change is a bit of a fight these days).
Any advice welcome!
Good luck of course and all the very best with lots and lots of babydust!

hello there
Hope you dont mind me joining the thread
I have one beautiful baby from 2nd time lucky (understatement!) ICSI in 2004
Undergoing FET at the moment - praying that just one of our 4 frosties will defrost. The success rates look really low so I'm not that hopeful. But praying I too will be on the 2WW in about a weeks time.
I too feel greedy trying for another - but I just have to!

How long do they recommend that you dont lift etc-I can't remember from last time.
My one year old does walk or crawl so I'll have to lift - if I get that far!

TAke care all

Hi Caz and welcome. In theory the whole re. lifting 2ww but Zita et al. doesn't seem to deal with people with kids already, for obvious reasons. I got a +ve when my DD was turning 2 so still needed lifting, help, carseat. carrying etc. (we've lots of steep outside steps) and it was OK.

Bina, I test the day before you but I'll only get my clinic's blood test result on 22nd. I'll hpt if I need to.

I've always used the floor for changing so there's not much more than lifting to avoid. I don't think, except for trying to keep it to a minimum, there's much you can do with a baby already.

Re. the days that matter, I think for an EC last Wed, that would be today and tomorrow - roughly. Again, you can only do what you can in the circumstances.

Best of luck to us all!

Hi again,
Still 8 days to go....waiting is driving me mad!
Caz22, welcome here! You're in the right place! when did you cycle in 2004? I did in March/April (long protocol), so maybe we've come across each other beofre? Good luck with the defrosting - hope you'll get a couple of lovely embies to transfer! Keep us posted!
Debra, so we'll know 'officially' the same day! (I won't do a HPT, because didn't do last time and it worked, so want to stick with it). But do let us know the result of your home test!
Well, I tried to really only lift Lucy when I absolutely have to (even persuaded her to climb up and downstairs by herself), but there are of course occasions when I have to pick her up. I felt OK all day Monday, but today I really felt sooooooooo not pregnant! Somehow really 'slim', not as bloated, so it probably hasn't worked. Even though DH says that I said exactly the same last time........I keep trying to look for signs, but at the end of the day there's no telling for me. I'm just really worried I picked up Lucy too much, even though I couldn't have cut it down any more. But I hate the thought of looking back after a BFN and regretting anything I did during the 2ww. I keep wanting to make sure I don't regret anything....!
Anyway, HAPPY Valentine's Day. Hope you all had a lovely day and evening! Let love cnquer it all, eh?
Best,

Hello Girls,

Sorry I negleted this posting but would like to catch up and wish you all a big BFP :D !!
I was amazed at how much more imput we need at my age...
Only 6 folicls at 375 gonal f, and got only 7 eggs.
Only 4 fertilized and this was added to my last 3 frosties. Out of the 7, only 2 got to blasto. One from my 34 year old cycle and one from now.
I will be testing onfriday the 17th.

I had some mild nausea and a bit of sore books, like a tingling feeling just like my other ivf cycle, but today I am back to feeling nothing... Back to my 'fried eggs' breasts... so I am not feeling too positive... Nausea was certaily due to DH cooking
My little one, which just like Debra'sg little one, we also call her DD, is lovely and in her inocence she loves playing with her dolly as her 'baby sister'. Some friends are on the next geeration already and she coos over the babies...
I hope I can give her a sibling, I trully hope so.

I will keep posting here and wishing you girls all the success and a lovely next addition to the family.
God bless and good luck to everyone on treatment.
Love
Laura
