Marybeth,
If this is the hour-long glucose test, you CAN eat the morning of the test. The truth is, the drink they gave me (I am in Israel, so maybe it's a bit different) was just super sweet. So it's annoying, but not overly nasty. It can make you feel a bit dizzy because of the high sugar concentration, so I was told not to go running around too much during the hour-long wait. It's really not that bad. They also gave me the option of mixing it with lemon juice to counteract the sweetness, but I just got it down without. I think the follow-up 3 hour test (for those who 'fail' the hour long) is supposed to be done on an empty stomach, but not the hour long. Good luck! Oh also, you asked what bothers me when I put in my lenses; it just feels like there are eye lashes trapped inside, it's that kind of discomfort. So I haven't been wearing them. I hope that doesn't happen to you, although it is nothing to worry about if it does (refer to what Tina wrote me).

Tina,
Thanks for the info regarding contact lens wear. A friend of mine at work told me her mom also had trouble wearing her lenses during her pregnancy. It's a good thing I got new glasses a few months ago! The old ones were not the right prescription. Anyway, you are sooo lucky you're not experiencing constipation. It's yucky!

Rebecca,
Good luck with your glucose test results. Let us know when you got your 'normal range' results :)

I'm feeling well today, if a bit sleepy. But, I drank some coffee a few minutes ago(I've been allowing myself a cup almost every day since my 2nd trimester) and that is doing the trick. I'm excited about my Jerusalem trip tomorrow. I could definitely use a break, as work can be a bit stressful (lots of report writing, phone conferences with parents, teachers, etc.), and I could do with some pampering. These 3 months are OUR time, ladies, let's take advantage, I say! Another positive is that after next week, I am down to three days a week at work. I wasn't really given a choice, and the truth is it's only logical, since I can't start treating a bunch of new clients and leave them hanging when I go on maternity leave (I'm a speech therapist). That wouldn't be fair. We could use as much money as possible right now, but I think the phasing out of work is best, as it can get physical at times (lifting the little two year old kids, sitting on the floor with them), and the parents are starting to notice me getting winded quite quickly. It's embarrassing when that happens  , but I guess they understand. So I will take the opportunity to rest rest rest. I know that 'rest' will be in short supply come august, so I will take this opportunity.

That's about it for now. Be well, mommas.

Marybeth,

In regards to either the 1-hour or 3-hour glucose test, my doctor's instructions were ABSOLUTELY NO FOOD AFTER 10PM. WATER IS OKAY. My tests were started at 8am and 830am respectively. It was really difficult. Baby would be bumping around when I got up. So I talked to him/her that I couldn't eat until after the test was done. It got even more active when I drank the sugar syrup. (It actually tasted like a sweet flat carbonated drink.) It wasn't common feeling the want to gag or throw up since I hadn't eaten since 7pm the night before.

During the test, I was able to sip water but not gulp nor move around too much. They didn't want my body to use up the glucose quickly.

Please check w/ your doctor on their instructions.

Karen

I think I will call my doc's office tomorrow because I can't remember what they said about not eating before - I don't recall them telling me I couldn't. Who knows - it was SO long ago! :)

Does anyone else have a problem with their hands falling sleep at night? It is making me crazy. I wake up from it constantly as they start to hurt and tingle. Very weird.

I went to the gym after work - OMG - so much better! I guess the walking was putting too much pressure on my back, so I switched to the elliptical machine at the gym. No pain! I was even able to do weights and everything. I think I am going to stick with that as Texas weather is already starting to heat up and I can't walk outdoors much longer!! For anyone who is working out, stick to machines. Amazing differnce. As for my weight gain...ugghhhh...I think I am up over 20 pounds now. I just must be meant to gain weight in this pregancy. Oh well. Hope Noah is enjoying his new home cause the sight of me naked still scares me. Ha!

Hi all,

Marybeth,
Hmm, I guess some glucose tests are different. I was given a piece of paper stating specifically that I need not fast the morning of the hour long test. Maybe the drink they give here is different.

Tina,
I created a thread titled "strange symptom- weak/achey arms in morning" at the beginning of my pregnancy. At the very start of my pregnancy, my arms felt like lead weights in the morning, and they were achey, like a charlie horse feeling. It went on for a while and eventually stopped for me. However, my arms in general are a lot weaker in pregnancy. When I thought about it, it made sense, since our bodies are working harder now, and the major organs 'need' whatever nutrients, blood etc. we have in our body more than our limbs do, hence the arm weakness. That's my theory anyway, I could be wrong, but it's just what makes sense to me. BTW, I ADMIRE your level of fitness! Weight lifting?? It's hard for me to lift the laundry at this point! I'd like to be a bit more fit going into delivery, and your exercise reports are definitely inspiring!

Speaking of exercise, there is a group starting up near my (new) house with the same concept as 'The Biggest Loser', except we do NOT need to stand there in spandex (showing stretch marks and cellulite), nor must we step up on the giant scale. It's a weight loss contest, and I am DEFINITELY planning on joining once my baby is born. We will each ante up some cash each month, and at intervals, whoever lost the biggest percentage of weight will win the cash! That's enough motivation for me :).

So one of my best friends (in NY) just gave birth to a baby girl. One of my other best friends (they were 2 of my bridesmaids) gave birth to a boy (her 4th boy) about 1.5 months ago. I see them once a year, and we are arranging a play date already! Okay, a lame play date, as my little guy will contribute by sucking on a pacifier and burping, but still, a play date nonetheless  . An exciting thought.

That's about it for now. We leave for Jerusalem in a few hours. Have a great weekend ladies!

TinaO: I too am impressed with your dedication to fitness.....my work seems to be enough workout for me as I am walking around and moving clothes all day! I can't even think of doing anything else when I get home! You go with your fit self!!!

I have not had the probs with my arms and hands falling asleep...are you doing anything different when you sleep? Sleeping in a different position? I am assuming this is happening when you sleep...is it happenig when you are awake? if so, I would probably ask your doctor.

Shari: Have fun this weekend!!!

I will also call my doc before my appointment to make sure I am allowed to eat before the test! Thanks for everyones feedback!!!

Hope everyone has a great weekend!

I think you all are giving me too much credit for my exercise routine - it isn't stopping the weight gain - CLEARLY! I gained another pound just today. I think I am going to set the scale on fire and be done with it. I have just always exercised and trained so much last year when I completed my first marathon, so it is just so hard to stop and quit cold turkey. It is one of those things that helps me deal with the pregnancy and feel better. I would go crazy if I didn't.

Well, we made a BIG decision yesterday. I left work early and my husband and I toured a few daycare facilities. Whew - tough decision. I did not grow up in daycare and had a stay-at-home mom who was there for us all the time, so....putting my kid there is rough. However, I think we made a good decision yesterday. I don't know if any of you have heard of the Goddard School, but I know they are big on the East coast. Anyway, it is much more of a school and a learning environment with every teacher there having at least a bachelor's degree, so it isn't like the babies or kids sit around staring at 4 walls. There are set schedules that include play time, naps, snacks, etc - but they also incorporate having the teachers sing songs and read stories to encourage language acquisition, and they pass balls and play games to develop motor skills. Sign Language is introduced in the infant rooms and infants learn to express their thoughts or needs without regard to their language ability. As they grow, they move into other classrooms where there are Learning Centers for imaginary play, blocks and puzzles, creative art and lots of books.
The teachers emphasize social growth with stories and songs incorporated into each day to encourage language skills. Toddlers practice self-help skills including hand washing, putting on their coats, picking up their toys and sharing with their friends. They also work with the children on potty training skills. The school is smaller and there are more teachers to each child. They were ranked the #1 childcare franchise in the U.S. and the one here is run by a couple who are there on-sight and have their own child there. My roommate from grad school who lives in Milwaukee is moving back here this summer with her husband and she had her father go check it out because he has a PhD in Psychiatry. Anyway, he loved it and they signed up both of their kids. She has a son that was born in January, so he and Noah will be in the same classoom for at least the first few months before her son moves onto the next level. So, I am feeling pretty good about it overall. As the kids get older, they teach them Spanish, computers, music, science, etc. and every day you get a report of what they taught your child that day and how your child did. It is certainly not cheap, but it came out to about $250 more per month than the standard nice daycare here, so we just felt it was a commitment we had to make. Having my friend's kids there helps as we can look at opportunities to carpool some. The Goddard School is only about 10-15 min from my house. So, there you have it. Tough decision, but we made it and put him on the waiting list for October. Has anyone else made their decision yet?? I wish you luck and if you have a Goddard School in your area, it is worth checking out I believe.

Ok ladies, I am off to run some errands. Noah's room is now painted - my husband did it and it came out cute! Once the curtains are hung next week, I think I will begin to be able to really see it all start coming together. How fun!

Have a wonderful weekend!

Hi everyone..just quickly checking in

Tina - it sounds like you have carpal tunnel syndrome - this is common in pregnancy & causes pins and needles/numbness in the hands during the night. I've had carpal tunnel for years (not pregnancy related, obviously) and I too am waking up with numbness. Ask your dr. if wrist splints would help. They usually do the trick for me. We too have almost made our decision RE daycare. We put a deposit down for the Goddard School, too. I liked it - it's very structured and seems safe and secure. You know what they are doing every minute. We will probably be sending our son there about a month after the baby's born (he has a nanny now), and then the new baby will go there at 3-4 months. It is THE hardest decision, so scary. I felt like I was going to puke when I mailed the deposit check.

Glad to hear everyone else is well. Shari - enjoy Jerusalem! Hope all those glucose tests come out OK. Mine was fine. I didn't have to fast at all, either, just show up & drink that gross drink.

hi again...

I also meant to add that I am really in the home stretch now & I am really getting excited! DP and I start childbirth classes on May 29. I am taking a 2-hour breastfeeding class too in mid-June. The baby's furniture was delivered today, and our addition is almost done. My next OB appt. is on May 28, then it's every two weeks until week 36, and then every week. It is getting SO CLOSE!!!!

Hi Everyone!
Tina & Seltzer -what a small world it is sometimes. I have a Goddard School about 3 miles from my house. It does have a great reputation. The daycare that I chose is actually in my neighborhood within walking distance and is very similar to the Goddard. Just as highly rated with basically the same program & qualifications for staff, and unfortunately the same high $ tag. The closer proximity tipped the scales for me -I love the fact that I can walk to it.
I had to stay in daycare as a child & it was horrible. We were basically in a big open room, all ages, it smelled like urine, & being in Texas the teachers all had paddles in their hands at all times. I truly hated it. BUT the daycares that I toured here recently have been light years away from my own experience, the difference between night & day. I had always hoped to be a stay-at-home mom for at least for a couple/3 years BUT life rarely turns out as you plan it. I also thought I'd have about 3 kids by now. I am so very glad that I've been fortunate enough to get pregnant this time & count my blessings, so it's not like I'm sitting around bitter. I truly think things turn out as they are meant to -I've had a great time with my husband these past 10 childless years & the whole infertility problem has brought us very close. A partner who will go through 7 years & approx $30,000 of infertility treatments that at times make you a crazy person is a real keeper!
Anyway, I'm also starting to feel the homestretch coming in. We've gotten the nursery painted & furniture set up -I just need to decorate. I've registered at babiesRus & my sister is sending out shower evites today. If any of you are having trouble choosing between all the different baby paraphenalia out there, I know I was, I HIGHLY recommend the book Baby Bargains. Can't remember if I've already recommended that or not. The first time I walked into BabiesRus I felt so overwhelmed that I just walked out, so MANY different strollers/car seats/stuff to choose from. That book really helped me.
The MD office did not call me back about the GTT, so I'm hoping that is very good news that I don't have to go back for the 3 hour/4blood draw fasting test. Karen, I'm hoping you got good news about the latest GTT?? My next appt is on 5/28 since I'm now in the 2 week club too.
Marybeth, hope you are hanging in there with the 2 babies. I have such a newfound respect for twin mommies now. I feel huge with just the one.
Shari, I hope you had a wonderful weekend in Jeruselem. You're not the first prego that I've read about on this message board that is moving around your due date. Moving can be so stressful anyway, so please continue to take good care of yourself.
DancinNancy -hope you are doing well & continuing to dance

I need to get going now. I'm feeling ambitious today so we are going to attempt to go hiking at a local park. The weather is a little cooler than normal, so this may be my last chance to enjoy a good hike until after the baby. I'm not tolerating the heat very well these days.
Take Care,
Rebecca

Seltzer: Glad to hear your spirits are high! It sounds like things are coming along for you!! Did you guys decide to add the addition due to the new arrival or was it something you had going on before hand? We added a bathroom to our has last year, and I remember how stressful that was and it was only one room!!

Rebecca: Sounds like you too are in good spirits! I think we are all so excited to be in the home stretch! I am soooo proud of all of us!!!!

I too was overwhelmed @ babiesRus but took my best friend who is a 2x mom with me..she helped me navigate my way around what I really needed and what was more fluff than helpful...
You are right, I think everything happens for a reason in our lives, even if it is not what we had envisioned or planned for. Sometimes we get the things we want, not how we want them and sometimes we get things we don't want, and realize how much they enrich our lives after they are there. anyway......
My first shower is today and I am getting excited!! I am going to bring my 4d ultrasound for everyone to see how healthy and handsome my boys are!!

I am feeling really BIG!! The boys are still pretty active and my stomach often takes on some strange shapes as they move around....we are listening to music twice a day and I think they like it...I hope they do anyway. I made a nursery music mix on my i-pod yesterday.....so I can pipe some soothing tunes into their room!

I went to a baby store yesterday and found this artist that will do custom artwork....I gave them all of my info. and hopefully she will be calling me soon. I have this neat idea of what I want over the changing table, but I am not artistic enough to pull it off. Hopefully she will not charge an arm and a leg..then I guess I will have to come up with a plan b!

belly rubs!!

Hello!!!

Well I had my first shower yesterday!!! It was sooo beautiful and so much fun!! Everyone was more than generouse and we racked up!!!!!!

When I drove up with all our goodies my dh looked at everything and said "we need a bigger house!!!"...however, after I got everything organized and put away it is fine!!

it is funny though how some family members can be so catty and think they know everything...my SIL for instance....told my best friend at the shower..."marybeth registered for so much stuff...she is NEVER going to use 1/2 of it"....she and MIL also did not buy things from my registry but bought things elsewhere that they felt were more appropriate......ends up they did not look at my registry very closely because I registered for ,exactly what they ended up getting me!!!! Anyway...it is just frustrating when some people (family members) think they know so much more and can do such a better job!!! I know I have A LOT to learn and will listen to advice, but give me a break!!!!!

Sorry to rant....other than SIL, the shower was soooo lovely!!!

Can't wait to hear about everyone else's upcoming showers!!!

Hello Ladies,

Well, my weekend in Jerusalem was VERY relaxing. The cool thing was that President Bush + lots of white house staff were leaving the hotel just as we were checking in ( ). Never stayed at a hotel that was president-worthy! Anyway, it caused about an hours' delay in our check-in, but after that, the service was amazing. They had laid out muffins and fresh fruit in our room upon arrival. In short, it was nice to feel pampered for the weekend. The hotel itself (King David) is the oldest luxury hotel in Israel, and is somewhat of a landmark. It was in operation about 15 years before Israel became a state. It has an old mansion/palace feel to it. Many celebrities and famous politicians have stayed there through the years, and all their signatures were displayed on a runway which ran the length of the lobby. Everyone from the Dalai Lama to the Kennedys to Candace Bergen. Pretty cool. Of course, we were only able to afford one night there (if that), but I figured that if we're gonna get to experience it, NOW is the time. I'm glad we did.

Anyway, back to the grind and reality :) . I begin childbirth classes/lamaze this coming sunday. I found a really nice woman who runs the class from her apartment in english (a certified childbirth instructor), and there is only one other couple in the class, so it should be nice and intimate. My husband's english is only so-so, so it should be interesting and also funny, since he always manages to make me laugh with his attempts at sounding American, which he wants to do so badly :). I will be doing a lot of quick translating which we have both grown accustomed to through the years.

Marybeth-
Sounds like you had a good time at your shower. There will always be dumb comments made (usually from in-laws, the know-it-alls of society), but I'm glad it was a joyous occasion overall. How are you BTW? I have such respect for you carrying twins; getting out of bed is a struggle for me, bellywise, I can only imagine what it's like for you. Judging from your posts, it sounds like you are doing a good job, good for you!

Okay, I must run now. Gotta get ready for work. Be well, mommas!

Hi everyone! Sounds like everyone is doing great!

Well, just had our sono yesterday and it appears Noah has a big HEAD! His head is measuring 29 weeks and a few days. Hmmmm....think he will be smart like his mommy? :) He also has some sturdy legs on him, too, so perhaps he will end up a football player. His legs were measuring further along as well. He is measuring in the 68% percentile. My husband is 6'0, my brother is 6'4, and my dad was 6'3, so even though I am so short and petite, height runs in the family. I was hoping I would not pass on my 5'2 status to Noah and it looks like that might not be the case. My doc said we will continue to watch things and see how large he is measuring at the next appt in 4 weeks. He was 2 lbs, 7 ounces. Wow! Amazing how quickly they grow! But I have to admit that the thought of having a big baby at my size is very scary. But other that that, our little guy is PERFECT. They said the head size was nothing to worry about as often times the body catches up, and they checked him and all was well. My low lying placenta also resolved itself! Yesterday was a good day! I asked my doc about the hand falling asleep thing and it sounds like it is a circulation thing as the only time it happens is when I roll onto my back...which appears to be constantly! I wake up all through the night due to the hand thing. Oh well!

Marybeth - I would fast before my appt for the glucose testing if I were you. I did not and then the lab people stated they recommend that you do and that it could cause elevated levels. I get my results back tomorrow, so hopefully mine will be ok. I am glad your shower was fun!! Wasn't it exciting getting all that fun stuff and it makes it so real??? Sorry about the catty family members. Some people just don't think! I have a story I will share at the end of this post that really hurt my feelings.

Shari - Your weekend sounded wonderful. What a cool hotel!! :) That is so neat. I am so happy you had such a nice time. You will have to tell us about your birth classes. They won't even let me start them here until like July...which is weird to me! :?

Rebecca - Congrats on finding a daycare! It is such a TOUGH decision and growing up with a stay-at-home mom makes it so weird to put my child in one. But you gotta do what you gotta do and with the economy the way it is, everything is getting tougher. Our electric company said prices will be up 30% this summer due to fuel prices. Uggghhhh. Oh - and I LOVE Baby Bargains - that book has helped me a lot!!

Seltzer - Sounds like you are getting excited!! I can't believe we have all made it into the home stretch!! SO exciting! It has flown by, hasn't it??? How did the baby furniture look??? It is such fun putting the room together. Our curtains are going in on Friday, but the dresser and chair won't be in for at least another 4 weeks!

Karen - Hope you are well!

Ok, so my story that really pissed me off this weekend: A friend of mine that lives in the neighborhood who is also pregnant (7 1/2 months)stopped by on Sunday and wanted to see Noah's room. Well, I don't see her very often anymore and her first reaction when she saw me was, "Oh my gosh - you have gotten so big! You are as big as me!!!". Ok, for starters, I am NOT even close to as big as her. She is a much bigger girl and probably 6-7 inches taller than me. Secondly, EVERY time I see her or her husband, they always make comments about how I am "really showing" and it just irritates me. She flippin told me I was showing at 7 weeks and I was just bloated after dinner! I make it obvious that I don't like their comments and she doesn't STOP! So on Sunday, I make it obvious again about her comments and she KEEPS GOING! She says something else about, "Wow - I mean, you just really popped out there. I can't believe it.". I said to her, "You would think another pregnant woman would know that continuing to make comments like that is really rude and how every time I see her, she always has to act like I have gotten so big". But she just doesn't listen!! She will be at my shower in a few weeks and I really want to say something before the shower to her so that she doesn't start doing that at the shower. Hi Shari, glad you had a good time in Jerulsalem for your luxury/romantic weekend! I also like your new ticker.
Marybeth, I can relate to you in-law complaints about the registry. I spent a few hours registering, going back & forth with Baby Bargains & recall lists. I've got A LOT of stuff on the registry. I mean, why not? I had friends & MIL that kept asking When is the babyshower? When are you going to register?
Then my mom calls me after looking at it & says, "But I want to get you something special. What should I get you?"
I said Mom, just pick out something from the registry.
Then she said, "But then it won't be a surprise!"
"Well then just pick me out something you think I'd like."
"Great, what would you like?"
"Something from my registry!"

One bummer -my MD office has been trying to get in touch with me about my GT test results. So far we are playing phone tag. My written instructions say they will only call if the results are abnormal & you need to go back for the 3 hour fasting/4 blood draw test. My poor veins -they really got used up during my IVF cycles & I'm really dreading 4 blood draws in 3 hrs. I figure I'll end up looking like a bruised pin cushion.
Anyway,
Hope everyone is well
Rebecca
