Sciatica

Post by brit10 »

I'm only 10 weeks along with twins, but I've been having sciatic pain for about the last 3 weeks. The pain is pretty severe on most days. My ob said there was nothing I could do about it....somehow I just don't believe that. (For numerous reasons, we are looking for a new ob!)

Anyone have any suggestions?

Brit,

I have been haviing the same pain for the last few days. My OB told us to place a heating pad in the area where the pain orginates for about 10-15 minutes. She also told me to do some minor streches (almost like small longes). These seem to help, but by evening I am pretty sore so I allow myself a warm bubble bath and a small cup of tea. This helps me relax enough to go to bed.

Good Luck!

Go to a good massage therapist and tell them to check and see if your Piriformis muscle in your rear end is to tight and pinching your sciatic nerve. Make sure you ask the therapist if they work with pregnant women and if they know how to release a piriformis during pregnancy.

This muscle is great cause for much sciatic pain...

I'm glad you brought this up! I'm 19 weeks tommorrow with twins and I have had a horrible time overnight with the same pain for more than a month. I cry everytime I have to change sides in the night the pain is so intense. Last weekend, the pain followed me into the daylight hours and I couldn't ease it for anything. Tylenol doesn't help at all. The only thing that I found gives just a bit of relief is the heating pad but of course you can't stay on it all night (I've tried, it won't work).
If you are able to find relief, please share! Walking gets more painful by the day...

Hey girlies

I had the same problem, although I was not too sure it was sciatica. It was hurting my lower back (top of mu butt) on both side. It started at 7 weeks pregnancy. I thought it had to do with pregnancy because I never had it before. But I do not undertsand why, it couldnt not be because of the weight as I did not put any weight on...

It was worth lying down at night, especially when I was on my back and wanted to move to either side. I did cry few times as well!

I lost my baby 2 weeks ago, and the pain is still there but it seems to go away slowly now, so I guess it was baby related...

Sorry I dont have any tips to make it better... I know that i would not go to the chiropractor because I was scared it would harm the baby, and I was waiting my 2nd trimester to see one.

I agree with danielle, if you can find someone who knows how to handle pregnant women, go for it! this pain is just too intense not to do anything about it

good luck to all

I read that the extra progesterone makes the joints relax, allowing things to relax in the pelvic region and put pressure on the nerve that causes the pain. I agree, Tylenol doesn't do a thing, but warm baths ease it for a little while. Just resting seems to help me too...until I have to roll over. There are times that the pain is so bad I can't put any weight on my left leg.

I've also been having terrible gas pain and constipation pressure and that only makes the pain in my rear that much worse. I've vowed to drink more water starting today and my ob said I could take Mylicon for the gas.

It seems like every day there is something new to experience - and I'm not enjoying these surprises!

i'v had sciatica with all of my pregnancies, including this one... i go the chiropractor and get acupuncture... it does help.... it has taken some of the shooting leg pain away... i get it so bad that there are time i almost lose my balance because of the shooting pain that start in the middle of my bum and travels down the leg.. Make sure that you sleep with a pillow or something between your knees and feet and lay on your side...

i would like to say that it goes away after birth... my first pregnancy it went away, but the next pregnancy it stayed, and i had steroid shots in my spine and much physical therapy.... I wish you all luck and think about chiropractor....
