Baby Aspirin really prevent miscarriages?

Post by Michela_2476 »

Hello all,

I am starting an IVF cycle in JAN 07 and I've been reading about baby aspirin. I've had 2 miscarriages and 1 ectopic and I look hopeful on getting pregnate on my Ivf cycle, but then I start to worry about miscarriage, so does baby aspirin work?, should I start taking it now?
I do take folic acid and vitamin C, lots of water and exercise.... anything else??

Thanks and god bless,

Michelle

From what I understand, baby aspirin can be helpful with certain types of clotting issues, but my RE seems to use it with all patients. That seems to be a controversy, though, as a lot of REs don't use it with all patients. You might talk with your doctor, he/she would know best.

Best of luck with your first IVF! I hope you have success!

Hi Michelle,

I have a best friend who tried to get pregnant for 4 years then suddenly fell and miscarried about 4 / 5 times in a row, she was then told to take baby asprin as soon as she fell again and to keep taking the asprin for many ( not sure how many - check with your doc) months into the pregnancy. She did this and now has 2 beautiful babies, both natural conception and both with asprin. Apparently it thins your blood and yes helps prevent clotting.

Now, I have used 2 different hospitals for ivf the first didn't do asprin the second did, I haven't fallen pregnant yet due to tubal damage so I don't know on a personal note if it works. I must warn you though , that when I was taking the asprin ( 1/2 a day) I was also taking pre-natal multi vitamins rather than just folic acid and my nurse told me to stop taking them and just use folic acid , apparently one of the vitamins works against the asprin and they both void each other out. I notice you take folic but felt I should put it down as somebody else might read it and not know. The bottom line is to speak to your individual doc. but I would be in favour of asprin.

Best of luck x

It really depends on the woman. If you have a clotting disorder, often seen in women with repeated early miscarriages, then baby aspirin can make a difference. It thins the blood and helps prevent clots. For that same reason, if you have a tendency towards bleeding, definitely don't take it, as aspirin will cause you to bleed more.

It's really best to talk to your doctor and see what he thinks is right for you.

Good luck!

Hey Michelle,

sorry to hear about your miscarriages and ectopic...

On my first IVF attempt, I was given baby aspirin to help the implantation, but it did not work
On my 3rd attempt, I was not given any, But I got a BFP!
Sadly, I lost my baby at 12 weeks. I had a D&C 2 weeks ago, and a follow up appointment in 2 weeks. I dont know if they can see from the D&C what was the problem. If blood clots, or genetics, but I will ask

I want to go ahead with another cycle in Feb, and I will ask my doc about baby aspirin again. I know that she says it has not be proven to be effective, but if she tells me that it cannot harm me or the baby. (and If I am lucky to get a BFP) I will go ahead with it.

I dont know why, but I have the feeling that my baby died because of a blod clot stopping the blood going to the baby. At 11weeks 2 days, my baby was alive and well, at 12 weeks he was dead. Also After the D&C, I passed a huge egg size hard blod clot and I believe (maybe wrongly) that it could have been why...

We can stay in touch, I will ask my gyne when I see her on the 21st.
