Has anyone beein diagnosed with OHSS (ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome) during the two week wait? I've been on antibiotics (Augmentin) for a sinus/bronchial infection and the side effects can be severe upset stomach, nausea, etc. I thought this is what I had but my stomach is now bloated almost up to my rib cage, it's very tender, I'm nauseaous, and I'm having shortness of breath. My pharmacist told me to call my RE as it sounded like OHSS. The on-call RE tonight said it does sound like that and wants me to call my RE tomorrow for an appointment and/or ultrasound, and they may or may not have to drain the cysts. I had the ET on Tuesday 2/27 and my pregnancy test is on Saturday 3/10.
Just wondering if anyone else has gone through this? Anyone get a BFP and have OHSS? Anyone have to have them drained? Any input would be great. I'm in pain!
Hi -
I had OHSS after transfer. Mine was not severe compared to some people's. I was very bloated and had shortness of breath, especially when walking up just one flight of stairs. It developed a week after transfer.
The RE "officially" diagnosed it by doing blood work. Once diagnosed, I had to stay to get an I.V. They also told me to eat lots of protein and drink salty liquids (like chicken broth and V8 juice). This helped immensely. It may seem counter-productive to drink liquids, but the sodium helps to correct the electrolyte imbalance you are experiencing.
BTW - Most ladies who develop OHSS after transfer get BFPs!!!!! It can be a serious complication but most likely means you are pregnant!
Thanks for your reply. That's good to hear about the BFP - I'll keep my fingers crossed. I am extremely uncomfortable - almost waddling becauase my abdomen is so sore. I can't stand chicken broth but I love V8 so I'm starting with that right now. I couldn't get that link to work but I'll try it again.
I joined this board today because I was in search of someone that was going through hyperstimulation too. I am dying here! Not really, but I'm incredibly uncomfortable too. We just went through IVF and got a BFP last week. Of course, we're thrilled, thrilled, thrilled! But, man! This hyperstimulation is a beast.
I gained 8 inches in my waist in a matter of days. I couldn't even stand fully upright because my belly was stretched to capacity. I work at a job where I wear tailored suits and let me tell you, those babies are not even close to fitting!
Thankfully, after 2 or 3 weeks of severe symptoms, I am starting to reduce in bloating. But I still feel some very strong ovarian pain, like cramping. I'm just wondering how long this is going to last. I want to start focusing on the new baby and forgetting about this pain! Ladies, any ideas?
hi i also had ohss after EC i was so bloated i honestly looked five months pregnant had shortness of breath and pain too .the water really helped i had to drink 3 litres a day after two days of doing this the bloating went down still got shortness of breath a little but now im worrying i wont have a positive as ive been told ohss gets worse if your pregnant and mines got better.

Hang in there, Chvonne! I think I'll take your advice and start drinking tons more. If it helps, I'll take it! When will you find out whether you're pregnant?
Can anyone give me a time frame on how long they had OHSS and any other tips on getting over it?
Congrats, Heidi, on your BFP too. My OHSS lasted almost two weeks. It was two weeks this past Wednesday (3 days before my pregnancy test) that I started feeling symptoms and by about Monday or Tuesday of this week I felt pretty normal. This Wednesday night I had kind of a big dinner and that really bloated me and I thought the symptoms were coming back but Thursday morning I was fine. Every so often, especially in the afternoon, I can feel a little bloated and my stomach gets hard, but the nausea is gone and I can breathe normally again, thankfully. It was VERY uncomfortable for a solid 11-12 days.
My RE says it can take anywhere from 2-5 weeks, and it can just disappear one day, which is pretty much what happened to me. I could feel it getting better, and then one day I felt normal. I had my first ultrasound today. Two sacks were evident but only one heartbeat could be seen, but I'm just under six weeks which is a little early, so he's not sure if it's twins or not. But I'm at least thrilled about one solid heartbeat and I have another U/S in two weeks so we'll see how the second one looks.
Also, I was told that eating lots of protein in addition to drinking alot of clear liquids is very helpful. It makes the kidneys work more/harder, and the kidneys are what gets rid of the extra fluid from the OHSS. I'm not a big meat eater and with the nausea it was tough to eat anything. He said I could get protein powder to make shakes with, which I did, and I think that helped. I had snacks of cheese and ate chicken and eggs whenever I could. I've also been told (not by my RE) that salty drinks like chicken broth and V8 are helpful, but he said the protein in my case was the best (I guess there are varying degree of it).
Chvonne - don't worry about getting a negative yet. I've heard that it can get bad and then get better and you can still be pregnant, as in my case. I'll say a prayer for you.
Thanks so much for all the info. I've been drinking protein shakes but wasn't sure if it was safe. But RE says it's ok, so I'll keep going. You're lucky it's only 2 weeks for you. I'm three and counting. My doctor said I'll reach a peak and then start to taper. I've started to taper but I sure wish it would just go away in an instant as you said. My ovaries feel absolutely massive still (and very painful on occasion) in my abdomen. At least my upper abdomen is decreasing in size.
This whole thing OHSS thing is really crappy if you ask me! I mean, awesome that I'm pregnant and I know this is a symptom of that, but it just sucks to feel bad for so long. I think I must have it pretty bad. I'll keeping eating and drinking protein and drinking fluids. *Sigh. (I know I sound like an ingrate and a whiner. I'm just trying to get through this.)
thanks for the support only three more sleeps till test day i suppose ive still got it slightley as im still quite bloated although that heavy feeling is gone so i hope thats a good sign the water definitley helps
