1st IVF cycle resulted in a BFN-can anyone out there relate?

Post by srlegaspi »

Hi. I recently just went through IVF for the first time. My result ended in a BFN. I was wondering if anyone had the same experience and if they have, what is their next step.

Hi
I am sorry you have recently been through this mad rollercoaster called IVF and even sorrier you got a BFN, I have been exactly where you are twice and it is real pants.... I am not sure what you are exactly asking whether it is with regards to jumping straight back into it or not... I personally think we are all different, although emotionally and physically I would have a little break, let your ovaries get over their trauma but even more importantly the pair of you need to get over your trauma...people underestimate the impact an IVF cycle has on us I was in a real bad place after my BFN's emotionally, physically, psychologically and financially! so I had a break and 3rd time lucky hey presto! my belief is that is due to me being more prepared, much more positive and calmer...when you feel you can cope with this major challenge then pick yourself up, relax and invoke some positivity...you will get there when the time is right and even more importantly BELIEF, believe in yourself and your consultant.

I hope this has helped even a tiny bit, you are not alone and we are here for you, please keep smiling and do not let it get you down....keep
smiling

All the best, and heres to next time xx

My first IVF in Sept 2006 ended in a negative. Out of 16 eggs, 9 fertilized. They put 3 in me and we were gonna freeze the other 6. Not one of the 9 made it..... I felt devastated.... didn't even have any left to freeze and try again. Not sure what's next as we really don't have the money + 10K in debt from the first try. My doc suggests donor eggs due to my age. Just don't know what we'll do. Good luck to you and sorry it didn't work for you.

I am sorry to hear of your bfn. they suck. As you can tell from my signature, i have had 3 bfns, so unfortunately, i can relate. Keep your chin up, though. I don't know your situation, but there are many women on this board who have gotten preg on their #2 cycle. What will happen next will depend a lot on what your underlying problems are, how this drug protocol worked, etc. My RE always has a consult a few days after BFN to discuss the next plan. Make sure you get all your questions
answered and feel comfortable with the plan.

Again, i am sorry for your bfn. Hang in there. Wishing you all the best for your next try.

Thanks...I feel better. It just really sucks as we didn't have any eggs to freeze either. We have the money to do it one more time w/o going into debt but that is it. I think I will wait a few months and do some acupunture with the infertility diet and see what happens. I am 37 years old so we will try only until I reach 40. If it doesn't happen by then I don't think we will have kids.

Thanks for everyone's support.

Hi srlegaspi,

Sorry to hear about your BFN. My situation is very similar to yours. I'm 37 (male infertility factor but not serious) with the 1st IVF cycle failed (7 top grade eggs, done 3 ETs but all didn't work). Of course I am very disappointed but apart from that, what else can we do? I feel so passive on the whole thing. You can hardly take control on it.

Fortunately, I can afford for the second round. I have talked to the doctor and she suggested me to skip one AF and start a fresh cycle in April. If everything is fine, I wil have EC and ET again in mid May.

In the mean time, I will go to see the Chinese heralist for 2 months to get myself prepared. My doctor also suggested me to take aspirin next time before ET to "strengthen" my uterus. She had prescribed aspirin to me during my 3rd ET last time but I got stomach ache (don't know if it is related to aspirin). Anyway, I will try it again. One more thing, my doctor suggested me to receive acupuncture half an hour before and after ET. Don't know if it helps.

Anyway, I will try my best to do whatever I can and hope it will work next time. Fingers crossed.

What is your plan? Have you talked to your doctor?

Hi Michelle!

I haven't talked to the doctor. We have our follow up appt after we return from vacation. We are going to Cozumel for 8 days and I really need this trip. We have had it planned for a year and it couldn't be better timing.

I am going to try for 2 months on my own with this diet and the acupuncture.

My infertility is "unexplained". I had an etopic pregnancy so they think I have one bad tube but besides that, my DH is OK, and I am OK. I still can't believe it is so hard to have a baby. This has been an emotional roller coaster for me. I wish I was like 30 and not 37 and that way I wouldn't feel like I was running out of time.

Yeah, it not taking really shocked us. They did a Day 5 transfer (blastocyst) with top grade embryos....but I was sick. I had a horrible cold and such a bad cough. Everything was wonderful up until transfer day. I responded really well to all the meds and the shots really didn't bother me. They got out 16 eggs at the ET and then 9 fertilized top grade. In the end, there were 2 really good ones on Day 5 so he didn't transfer 3. I really think he thought it would take. I was just so sick with the cold that after the transfer I just had a really bad feeling about everything. Then they called and said none developed to freeze and at that moment I thought that if they didn't last to freeze then maybe the 2 good ones didn't take.....so I constantly worried. After that, I was probably a little scared with everything so I took an HPT (oh the dreaded pee stick...I hate those things)!!!!! It was negative so I didn't have much hope. There was a little hope because of all the things I was reading on the net about people being prego with the blood test even after the HPT was negative. Unfortunately, I did not have that turn out!!! :(

I think if the diet and stuff doesn't work, we may try again in June.

Are you scared to try again???

My insurance does not cover a dime either so we are paying everything out of pocket.

I am sorry to hear about your BFN but I can totally relate. My last cycle was a bust and I got very depressed. My husband took me to Mexico for a week on a cruise. We just got back and I do feel better - although the fabulous food and tequilla I drank probably also helped, lol!

My doctor wanted me to try again immediately, but I felt I needed the month break. The drugs are just so hard on my body and I wanted to feel "normal" for just a little while. We will start stims again around April 19th. I am excited to try again. At my age, I think this will be the last try with my own eggs even though I made great embryos last round. If this doesn't work, I will discuss the possibility of donor eggs or adoption.

Shantell - I can relate to you and I totally understand your disappointment. We also have unexplained infertility and the dr. keeps telling us there is no reason why we shouldn't get pregnant. But it's not happening! I too wish I was 30 and much younger. We have done numerous IUI and our first IVF was in Nov. 06. We had 18 eggs and 11 fertilized and 3 embroyos were put in. I had nothing to freeze. I did the HPT too because I was so anxious and it came out negative. I was so upset and depressed. Than the dreaded phone call from the nurse that it was a BFN. I immediately decided we were going to do it again and now I'm in my 2ww period, again 3 embroyos were put in. I think the vacation will do you good and at least get your mind off of things, although I know in the back of your mind your still thinking about all this.

I'm so tired of being patient and anxious and just all the emotions that come with what I call a nightmare.

Can you or someone explain the infertility diet? I would love to hear about that. I've given up caffeine but I'm a huge chocoholic. Maybe if I had some guidelines it would help to follow them. Thanks! Angie

Hi! You can go to the website:

www.infertilitydiet.net

Or, you can buy the book. I have heard two success stories so far.

Good luck with this cycle!!! Let me know how it goes!

Thanks, I'll definately check it out. I heard a news report about a woman who was finally able to conceive by changing her diet. She lost some weight and was eating healthier, more green leafy veggies and salads. They said her dr. had put her on this diet but it didn't give any resources to look up. At this point, I'm open to trying anything
