Hi all, This may be a really stupid question but here goes anyway......
We have just worked out that DH will be away on business when our first IUI is scheduled in April. How long before insemination must he give the sperm sample? He has suggested freezing it but I would imagine it has to be fresh. Please could anyone with IUI experience let me know the answer.
Thank you very much,
Jane

Hi Jane37,
Im sorry i don't have any experience with this - however my clinic did say (Before we had to use a donor) that hubby would give a fresh sample there and then in the clinic and they would do the IUI straight away.
Your clinic should be able to tell you this. Fingers crossed you can arrange something aye:) Would be a shame to miss a cycle.

Thanks Polly,
DH is not happy about giving his sample at the clinic, wants to do it at home like his sperm test, have a funny feeling he'll have to do it at the clinic. It will be hard enough worrying about everything else without worrying about whether he can 'perform' too

Hi jane, how are things for you?
Ive so been down that track with Hubby. he out right refused to do a test at the clinic at all when they were testing his sperm levels.. Both times we did it at home and i had to race it to the lab. Bit different with your situation though since you actually need to use it. Must be hard for a bloke aye - especially since everyone knows what you are doing in the little room:( Still if we have to have our legs in the air im sure they can cope with their bit. Easier said than done im sure.
I hope things are working out for you. When are you expecting to Ovulate and have your IUI? A very exciting time for you aye.

Hi Polly,
I have a laparoscopy booked for Thursday this week and have already signed papers for doing the IUI next month if all goes well. If an IUI isn't possible then we'll start with IVF. I personally am not sure whether an IUI would work as I have a blocked tube on the left and the right was unblocked in November. Unfortunately since then I've only ovulated on the left! The laparoscopy is to see what the situation is, I had an ovarian cyst removed 18 months ago from the right side so it is possible that the right ovary is damaged.
It looks like we're going to need some kind of help unless they miraculously unblock my left tube this week Anyway this cycle we're out but I'm hoping for a miracle I just can't deal with DH's stress as well, as you say it's not much compared to what we're having to do
I also read your no sperm post, sometimes it;s very difficult to remain positive but I tell myself every day that I am lucky with DH, my family and friends. Hope all will work out for you too, I think the quote on your profile says it all.

Hi Jane,
That is fantastic you have your Laparoscopy this Thurs - not sure how far behind German is from NZ - that might be our Saturday by then:) Will be thinking of you over the next few days anyway. Fantastic news you can try an IUI next month! ya for you, very exciting.
Not sogood about your tubes, but hey, you are heading in the right direction thats for sure and if you can do IVF thats even better - the odds are so much higher. At least your onto it and it sounds like your specialist is very proactive on getting you checked out.
Good to hear you are remaining as positve as you can. You are a lucky lady, things are underway for you, just remember that - some woman on here are waiting ages just to start treatment so when you thinking of happy things - that is one that is going your way:) I totally understand about DH stress - even though my hubby is being amazing about the DI thing and there is not one sign of stress at all (mind you he doesn't have to do what your hubby has to do) - ive let him buy a new boat to keep him occupied and his mind off things. Gives him something that for him is "Bigger" to think about and focus on - he is a mad waterskiier. Also it will be something for us to do as a family if and when we do have our children - kind of a bonding thing for him with the kids.
Anyway - all the best for your appt this week. - here's to the next stage for you both:)

Hi Polly,
Just had all the pre laparoscopy checks for tomorrow, had all my questions answered and I just want to get it out the way now Thanks for all your good wishes.
I am very lucky living in Germany because when something needs doing it is done quickly. I'm originally from the UK and have heard that people there have to wait months for appointments. We have to pay for our health insurance here so I'm definitely getting my money's worth!! If we go for IVF we have to get the insurance company's permission and then we can start, we've already applied for the IUI permission just need to see what tomorrow brings
Enjoy the boat. I grew up near the sea but am very landlocked here I think it is good to try and focus on other things as well. We moved house last year and I am doing lots of garden therapy
Hope all is ok with you.
Take care,
Jane

Hi Polly,
I'm so excited They unblocked both my tubes yesterday, I was so not expecting that! Now IUIs are an option too.
Feeling a bit sore but it was so worth it to do the laparoscopy.
Hope all is well with you.
Have a good weekend,
Jane

Hi Polly,
yes - onwards and upwards!
I'm still getting my head round this as the doctor wasn't exactly optimistic before the operation. Not sure when we'll start IUIs, we're out next month because DH is in the States for the crucial week. A couple of months to chill out I'm trying to be patient!
Hope all is ok with you.

Hi jane,
When you work out how to be patient, please let me know your tips!
Such a bummer your hubby is away aye, but im sure its for a reason and maybe some more time just to chill out is what is needed.
All the best.
Im doing my first IUI in May so im very much looking forward to that. You do have the added bonus of being able to use your husbands Sperm, i have to use a donor (Still can't believe it even though ive had months to get use to it!). Seems unreal at times.
Thinking of you heaps during this waiting time - i sure know what that is like.

Hi Polly,
I don't have any tips - today I'm not really feeling patient. I'm extremely mad with DH's boss for sending him away when I'm ovulating!! Very inconsiderate I'd say He has also suggested DH does a business trip in May, again around ovulation so DH is trying to work on an excuse why he can't go, if all else fails he'll tell him the truth. The bizarre thing is that DH almost never travels for his job. Is someone trying to tell us something I wonder
We saw the doctor this morning and will have our IUI in May too, probably around the end of the month. DH had blood taken this morning and I have to book a PAP smear but then we're all set for next month.
Maybe we'll have our IUI's the same time It must be very hard to get your head around the donor sperm situation and I know that I'm lucky with DH. I'll be thinking of you too and let me know how it goes.
Be patient
Jane

Hi jane,
Yes it is very inconsiderate of your DH's boss to send him away - such a hard one though aye, you can hardly annouce to the world that he needs to be here to do is bizzo in a cup so you can get pregnant! Unbelieveable that might happen again in May - i hope you can work something out for that one. Would be good to be doing our IUI's around a similar time to share the highs and lows. I will be around the middle of the month so we won't be far off.
Ya for the garden aye- ive been out in mine quite a bit so thats good aye, a good thing to keep our minds busy (well for a short time). Ive just recently decorated my bassinet, just something to help look forward to the whole IUI process, my dreams of being a mum have been so dragged out and i just needed something nice to do to remind myself it is all worth it.
Take care.

Good news! DH told his boss that he can't go away in May because of personal reasons and his boss was fine
Had a major low this morning after I dropped DH off at the airport. I just about got home before having a major crying fit. Called a friend and talked to her, feel so much better now. I can't explain how I feel, I'm pleased that we are moving on with our TTC journey but I feel a kind of grief that it's not going to be as easy as jumping into bed with DH. Does that make sense? I feel so bad for him that we have to 'go into that little room for him to perform' but I'm trying not to feel responsible for a situation that I can't control. I'm also very aware that at least we can use his sperm and we don't have to go through donor insemination. My heart goes out to you and all the other couples in that position. There is so much bravery on this board and many people will never know how brave everyone is.
Garden therapy is great and I hope that very, very soon you will be using your bassinet.
Take care Polly and thank you for all your support,
Jane
