Successful after endometriosis?

Post by hopealways »

Hi,
I'm going for IVF in the next couple of months. I would like to know if there's any impact on the success rate after endometriosis treatment? Anyone successfully delivered babies? I had lap in Feb and is on zoladex (med to treat endometrisos post surgery). I'm all nervous about the IVF process and like to know more about the outcome to be mentally prepared.
Thanks!

Hi

I am an Endometriosis success story! I was diagnosed in 2003 with severe endo by laparoscopy and then had six months on Zoladex followed up a laparotomy where they opened me up and divided all the adhesions. We were told to try for six months naturally and nothing happened so they put me on clomid. Two months into this I developed a twisted endometrioma on my left ovary and had to stop the clomid. A couple of months later the endo was back even worse than before and the outlok wasn't good. I had another lap, followed by another six months of Zoladex, followed by another Laparotomy where they opened me up again to divide the adhesions. I have what's known as a "frozen pelvis" where all my pelvic organs are stuck together because of the endo. We tried IVF straight after the second surgery last Sept but unfortunately it was unsuccessful. However, we tried our 2nd attempt in January and hey presto, I'm now 12 weeks pregnant!

I was like you, so scared that the endo had put pay to all our hopes of becoming parents, but the truth is with IVF there is no less chance than a woman without it. Have faith, stay strong and your dream will come true.

Good luck!

Hi

Like you I have endometriosis and am now nearly 24 weeks pregnant after my 8th cycle.

My endo is severe, my tubes are also badly damaged which led to fluid seeping into the womb (forget the name for this).

Its my understanding that it depends where the endo is on how it effects the results of ivf. In my case the seeping fluid, I was told halved my chances.

For the last 2 cycles I have been given antibiotics for a week before the egg collection and a week after, they wanted to remove or clip my tubes but this wasn't an option due to the adhesions so antibiotics were seen as the next best thing. I also went straight from 3 months zoladex on to the down regulating drugs.

Discuss your concerns with your consultant, they should be able to advise if you are looking at reduced odds and if there is anything extra they want to do for you.

Really hope things work out for you.

Emma congratulations on your pregnancy.

Hi Emma, Wendy,

Thanks for sharing your success stories with me. They make me feel hopeful to undergo the IVF process. I had severe endometriosis too and lots of adhesions. They got removed (not all as they were badly stuck to the large intestines & might risk rupturing the intestines) at one go with laproscopy. The doc also found that I have large uterus?! He said they will have in some degree affect the IVF results. He advised to start IVF straight after the last dose of zoladex to avoid the endometriosis coming back. Now am still on zoladex and will start IVF process sometime in Jul/Aug.

Emma, why was your 2nd endometriosis be worse than the 1st? If this is a recurring problem, shouldn't it be less serious than the previous one? Is there any way we could prevent or slow down the endo?

Congratulations to both of you. I hope to join you both one day!

Alwayshopeful

As you probably know, there is no known cure for Endo, but I do know that not ovulating halts the growth of it. My consultant said that I am just one of those people in who it grows back very quickly, and I develop adhesions at the drop of a hat. Lucky me! So, straight from the Zoladex I had the surgery to divide everything up, and like you, then went straight for IVF, therefore, not really having any periods in between and therefore not 'feeding' the endo.

My acupuncturist said that she thought the reason the first IVF wasn't successful was because my body hadn't recovered fully from the surgery (don't forget I was opened up though, you are lucky in that you had keyhole) and so therefore had a lot of scar tissue etc.

After the first go I decided to go on the pill until the second go to try to keep the endo at bay as much as possible. It seemed to work as we got a positive result.

They say the best cure for endo is to have a baby, as often it can "flush" out your system. Its just getting there that's the hard bit. But persevere...I wish you all the luck in the world.
