High Blood Pressure

Post by ltaylor »

Hi!
I was wondering if there are others out there that have high blood pressure before getting pregnant? I have high blood pressure and take medicine to control it. I would love to hear everyone's story. Thanks!

Hi

Just to let you know I went through fertility treatment /IVF despite having to take tablets for high blood pressure for since age 26. My advice is to make sure you are prescribed a med that is safe for pregnancy. Some of the meds are quite dangerous so make sure it is safe first.

Prior to treatment -Clomid, then IVF I was told to go to my GP every 3-4 weeks for BP readings. This gave my consultant a full picture of what was happening. Also I would have my BP taken whenever I was seen at the hospital. I was also only seen by my consultant for the whole 5 years of treatment /pregnancy. Great continued care not having to go through history etc with different Dr's. So make sure you are happy with your Dr, we felt we could trust our Dr 100%.

My consultant wrote to the drug manufacturers and got so much info on all my meds (also have other problems) whilst he was doing this I was referred to a cardiologist for tests. During treatment I had my BP monitored and referred back to my GP for extra readings.

Then when I got pregnant I was monitored by a BP specialist. She is still looking after me because we are hoping to try again and it wil prevent us have to wait for referals etc.

The good thing I found was that I was monitored so closely. In the UK you usually get one scan during pregnancy -2 if you are lucky. I was scanned every 3 weeks. I was also under consultant care. The only real downside was having to take 8 (yes 8) bp tablets a day-but believe me it is worth it.

I consider myself really lucky to have had such excellent care. So make sure you have a consultant who you trust and will go out of his way to help you.

Good luck

Jackie

Jackie,

Thanks for all the info. I'm glad you were successful. I'm going to see a BP specialist next week.
