Progesterone Shots

Post by Swig »

My RE suggested yesterday that we switch to the IM progesterone instead of the prometrium and suppositories that we used with the failed IVF cycle. Problem is DH won't be in town every day to give them to me. Yes..he'll be here for the bulk of it but the time will come where I'll have to do them myself. Could you do it? I've had a few women so far say she gave them to herself in the thigh. Want to hear what your thoughts are.

TIA.

I have given myself many progesterone IM injections without a problem. You can do it, it is easy. Just pivot and use a mirror to help you visualize placement in the upper outer quadrant of your buttocks. My nurse also suggested sitting, crossing your legs and leaning away from the injection side. I find that standing up is easier. It is a little tricky to inject using your non-dominant hand, but I have gotten used to it. It also does not hurt any more to inject myself than when my husband does it. Good luck!

I have found that warming the vile before you darwl up the medication helps. It makes it go in a little easier/faster. Good luck...you can do it!

I also did my own PIO shots "back there" and was nervous at first but then it became easy to do.

Be sure you ask for progesterone in sesame oil instead of progesterone in peanut oil, which is thicker & therefore harder to push.
I am a chicken when it comes to the IM shots so I use EMLA cream 1 hour prior to the injection. It works so well that sometimes I can't even tell if my husbands given me the shot yet or not.
