Back For More - Remember me?

Post by samk »

Hello,

Some of you may remember me - I have had three attempts at ICSI the last failure in May. At the time we were so devastated that we couldn't comtemplate going again - but as they say time is a great healer so we thought we would go for a FET in August. The hospital discovered I had raised active natural killer cells which could be an explanation for the failures so we are hoping this time could be the one.
The slight snag is that DH was made redundant last month but we figured we can't put our whole life on hold.. don't know if we are being a bit overly optimistic there!

I am thrilled to see that since I was last on there have been some ++++ results -

Anyway I guess I am an August cycler - oooooh its weird to be on the roller coaster again!

Hi Sam,

I remember you, If I remember rightly we were on our 2WW together last time.(I think we may have tested on the same day!) Our situations were similar, Im 28 and have had 3 failed ICSIs - we are now on our 4th I start injecting tomorrow.
I remember that you were really upset so Im glad you are back - maybe we will be on our 2WW together again. My E/T date will be around the 6th Aug if all goes well.

How did you find out that you had raised active natural killer cells?
I think I must have the same, as the embryos that we have had put back have all been A grade - I am going to ring the clinic tomorrow to ask.

Anyway good luck I hope it will be 4th time lucky for us both.

keep in touch (and come and join Aug cycle buddies!)

Sharon G XXXXXXX

Hi Sharon

I remember you too! How have you been.

To answer your question after our third failure they did three tests on us

1) levels of active natural killer cells
2) Clotting ( to see if my blood had a tendency to overclot which could fill the capilleries of the embryo)
3) Chromosomal ( not sure of spelling!) incompatibility as between myself and dh.

2 and 3 were fine but they found I had raised active killer cells. This means my immune system does not recognise the embryo as an embryo but as a foreign body which needs to be destroyed. They are not 100% sure this is what was causing the problem but it could be, particularly as I had positive HPTs on each occasion that just faded away. The solution is just to take steriods from the day before ET.

I really would call the clinic to ask about this it can do no harm and you never know it might be the answer!

Let me know what they say

Hi Sam,

I rang my clinic today and asked the nurse if I could have a test for Raised Active Natural Killer Cells and she said that the research that they have carried out doesn't prove that steriods make any difference to the condition so I am feeling a little bit down. I mean surely if our embryos are grade A there must be something wrong for a healthy, young woman to have 3 failed ICSI attempts? I've convinced myself that I have the same as you and that I will be getting another negative in August!

Sorry to be a pain but can I ask you a few more questions..?
-What steriods are you going to take and is it only the clinic that can prescribe them do you know or can you go to your GP? Also which clinic are you at?

I just can not believe that I could have this condition and that my clinic are not even going to test me for it , I could even have the other two things that you were tested for..

I think I will ring and ask to speak to a doctor tomorrow because I just can't relax until I know I am doing all I can to get a positive result.

Hope that all is well at your end.

Regards, Sharon G xxxxxx
Hi everyone - its good to see you all back and not giving up! Hi Marteen as well!

Sharon - I'm at the Lister. The steriods are predenidslone ( or similar spelling!) . The Lister told me I could get them from my GP as they are not a fertility drug as such, but I am not bothering as they are cheap from the Lister pharamacy. There are side affects such as weight gain and insomnia but thats not too bad in the grand scheme of things.

I know that the issue with active natural killer cells is a recent one so I guess no one knows whether steroids help or not - but i don know from looking at the boards that there is a least one person here (Alison I think?) who had a 4th success after taking steroids.

What clinic are you at? Is it worth just having an appointment with another hospital just to discuss the situation? I know it would be around £150 but it might be worth it???

As for me I am waiting for my period to start to ring the clinic. As I have been out of the IVF whirl for a bit I really am not sure when it is due! A couple of weeks I think.
