SYNTHROID -PLEASE HELP!

Post by babysteps »

Hi,

Has anyone been prescribed Synthroid while TTC? My RE said my TSH was slightly elevated  it's a 4 and he wants it to be a 2 before we start the next round of shots...he prescribed me 50 mcg ....but my concern is, once I start taking Synthroid will it make my thyroid depend on it for the rest of my life?, Since technically it's in the normal range. I have never taken this medicine before and I'm wondering if I should have asked the RE to test me again just to be sure? On the other hand he comes highly respected and regarded and I don't want to question him. Can you tell I'm just a little freaked out!? Would love some of your opinions on this!!? I'm so nervous!

I'm a bit obessed about this so I've posted on the TTC 40 forum too!

Thanks so much!

hi babysteps,
Sounds like you are borderline or subclinical hypothyroid. This is really not a big deal and you could probably not treat, IF you weren't TTC. Even though your TSH may technically be in the normal range it is not optimized and quite frankly we just don't now how all these hormones interact. And hypothyroidism is related to infertility. So even though it's not likely to be the reason in your case. It makes good sense to optimize your hormone function and get everything lined up to give you the best chance of making a baby. Your dose is tiny and there's no real downside, other than trying to remember one more pill. It is important to realize though that once you get pregnant your thyroid function could get even more out of whack and it will be importnant ot check your TSH somewhat regularly during the pregnancy. I don't know what to tell you about afterwards. You sound either subclinical or maybe just caught early in your presentation so maybe you'll stay at this level and it'll be no big deal afterwards or you're TSH will go up and you'll have to adjust your dose again and may need it for the rest of your life. I think you'll just have to wait and see. Hypothyroidism is incredbly common in women. And you barely made the cut. Please don't worry about it. And good luck with everything. I'm going for my ET today and though i'm excited, I'm really nervous too. Positive thoughts!
Take care,
Bebe
