Weight Loss before IVF

Post by Raine917 »

Just wondering if I am the only one out there who has been in these shoes before...

My BMI is over 40 so I had a total of 25lbs to lose before starting was what I was told during my initial consult last month. I have dropped 8 so far ... It is frustrating. My hubby and I are blessed that our ins covers IVF with no hassles - my day 3 labs were a little whacked but nothing that would stop us from going forward - everything was normal but my estrogen level was at 196 instead of in the 50's... my ultrasound showed no uterine problems... (I have blocked tubes) and his swimmers are just fine...so the only thing holding us up is those 18 lousy pounds. I have never been as focused at dieting as I a now - and it is working - just slow... and it was sad when I saw the nurse yesterday after my bloodwork and sonogram and she said let's talk next steps - and I had to tell her there ar no next steps until I lose the rest of the pounds....

Has anyone been in myshoes and successfully taken off excess weight?

Lorraine

Me - 39 - blocked tubes
Hubby - 46 with perfectly noraml swimmers :)

Hi Lorraine - Did they give you any reason? Does it lessen the efficacy of the meds? Or make the EC and/or ET more difficult? It just seems surprising that you weren't given more of an explanation and that they are linking losing weight to IVF effectiveness.

weight loss before IVF

Post by nannybear »

Lorraine,
I have done 3 IVFs. The first two my BMI was over 40 and they failed. Between the 2nd and 3rd, I went on a low carb diet and lost alot of wieight. The 3rd IVF was successful and we have a 15 month old boy. My Dr and nurses believe it was due to the weight loss.(they call me their poster child) I have PCOS so the Atkins diet really works, also you can lose weight really fast in the first two weeks of this diet. Hope this helps you.

Hi Lorraine,

being overweight is not good really for trying to get pregnant, I'm alittle overweight too, my BMI is 34, I have been struggling with my dieting for a long time.

My friend was also quite overweight and with her first child it took her a long time to get pregnant. She lost 56 lbs and then got pregnant naturally the first month she tryed and it now 18 weeks.

So good luck and take care

I have had 2 failed IVF cycles. While my doctor attributes the failures to poor egg quality because of my age, she want me to lose 30lbs before our donor cycle. She didn't say why and I didn't think to ask. I just know that losing weight will be more healthy for me anyway. It is so hard to lose weight especially if you have been overweight most of your life but it is possible. Good luck! I'm right there with you!

Hi Lorraine
In Sept last year my BMI was 39.1. It is now 29.3. I spend my entire life dieting and would lose then put on again. I did an extreme diet which was total meal replacement. PM me and I will tell you the name if you like. My progesterone level was 29.4 back in Sept and it is now 45. My doc suggested we wait 6 months for IVF to see if I would get pregnant naturally (we already have a 7 year old). If I were 25 years old I would but I feel time isnt really on our side.
My doc said every pound lost makes a difference. You have the best incentive in the world to help motivate you but believe me I know how hard weight loss is.
The Atkins is also very effective and it means you can still eat normal food.
Good luck!
