anyone w/ High fsh numbers and success stories??

Post by kbat »

Will have to have another clomid challenge test during my next period. Last time, I had this was in 2005, and I was normal. Since then I have had two day 3 tests and both show my fsh at 11, which I guess is borderline since it should be at 10 or under 10. I was told that after day 10 if the fsh is above 15 I am basically wasting my time w/ anymore IVF procedure. I know they are trying to be realistic, but I am really discouraged before even having the test.

Anyone out there w/ positive stories?

Hi Kbat-

I'm pretty much in the same boat as you----high FSH.

Yes, I need to hear a success story too. My re told me not to try again---heck.....I only did IVF one time. Many ladies try more than once. He told me I needed donor egg. I have goten over the shock of that news (given to me 9/13).

Taking some time off to collect ours thoughts, save $ and determine next steps.

I've been trying to keep up in the DHEA threads. Heard some good things there.

JULIE

I will keep my fingers crossed for whatever you decide. I am surprised they won't try at least one more time since FSH is at 16--not like it's super high. I know they don't like to see it above 15, but I was trying to do some research. When I google clomid challenge test info comes up and some clinics will still do IVF up to 22 FSH. but I doubt my re will do it.

I know it's very discouraging. I am kind of at a point of what to do if it comes back high. I haven't officially taken the test, but I am just anticipating the worst. I was trying to be hopeful, but when you talk to the re, she doesn't seem too optimistic, it's difficult to remain positive. But I figure if I heard some success stories, then it would assist me in deciding what do next. MY re doesn't suggest anything like acupuncture, yoga, etc. so don't really know if that's helpful in my situation or if they just don't buy into the usefullness of it. I want to try at least once more if there's still a possibilit. but if it's not likely,I don't want to put myself through it again.

I think my insurance would cover 2 more tries, but not sure if they would if there's a high fsh... Always thought I would stop at 6 tries anyway. Just wondering why this test wasn't done again before I started IVF. Maybe I wouldn't feel any better about it, but perhaps I could have saved myself some stress, heartache, etc...

Good luck to you. I will let you know what my actual numbers show and what my re says in the end....

Keep the faith.

Good

I did my first IVF last year at the age of 37. My FSH was a 13. I received a BFP and gave birth to twin boys this past February. There were other girls who had high FSH #'s at my clinic who also became pregnant so don't give up hope. I didn't!!!

When I had my sucessful ivf in 2003, my FSH was 14.2 and I gave birth to a healthy baby girl.

Oddly enough, when I started round 2 of ivf in July of this year, my FSH came back at 12.8. I don't know if its typical or normal for fsh to fluctuate over time (I had always thought it just steadily increased) but mine went DOWN from 3 years ago. BTW both tests were done on day 2 of cycle.

If you google women with high fsh you will find a bunch of websites full of success stories. Good luck!

Thanks Rotobaby and Kabillion!!

Good to hear your success stories! Nothing is for sure right regardless of what docts tell us our chances are...... docotrs tell you your chances are X or Y....then, nature does her own thing. Sometimes in our favor--- sometimes not.

What is ironic about my deal is that my grandma got pg with my aunt when she was 43! My mom was in college and my grandma was pg...ha. My aunt is like my sister--only 2 years older than me. Weird how it so natually happened for her. You'd think I get those good egg producing genes, but I was told fertility is not part of our genetics---passed down from women to women, like other things we may get from our mothers or grandmothers are.

KBat- so when then are you geting your next b/w for FSH??

I guess your right about fertility not being heriderty. My grandmother had 10 kids--her first one at age almost 27 ((My uncle was born in April and her birthday is in May). She had her last one at almost age 46 (again my uncle was born in Jan & in May she turn 46).

My bloodwork is tied into my period. If I get my period exactly 28 days, the first day of my period should be Sept. 26.... I have b/w day 3--then take some tablets day 5-9 I believe, and then on day 10 go for my final fsh b/w. I am kind of nervous, because depending on what it says will determine whether or not my re will tell me to continue. Anything higher than 15 on day 10, she will most likely tell me NOT to proceed any furhter do to low ovarian reserve and the amount of stim drugs it'll take to stimulate what I have. My insurance normally approves 6 IVF, so that's kind of what we were expecting to do. I've had 4, so I am really hoping for 2 more bites of the apple.....I think that even if I've heard of others having good outcomes, she may try to talk me out of it. I think my main problem is just getting good quality eggs from what I produce. I have no problem only getting 2 or 3 eggs fertilized at a time--better than none. But either I haven't gotten pregnant or they didn't develop normally. Since the first 2 times they did a day 2 transfer I can only speculate that they did not develop normally like the last time... So, if there's something I can do to get the few eggs I have to be good quality, I don't necessarily mind getting only a few at a time. I am just keeping my fingers crossed they will let me try 2 more times. After 6 tries and my age, I would probably accept the outcome--just not sure I am ready to give up at this stage now that I know all the details going into the ivf cycle...

I would NOT let your doc talk you out of trying again. Many REs (as I discovered in 2003) will not even treat patients with fsh higher than 12. That is because women with high FSH have a harder time getting pregnant and they dont want to screw up their centers stats. But I am living proof that it is not impossible to get preggo with an fsh over 14, as evidenced by my wonderful daughter.

If your RE has a negative attitude, I would switch to someone else as imo mental state has a LOT to do with it. Good luck and loads of baby dust

Thanks for the tip... I was kind of thinking about what you said. Unforunately, there are only 2 clinics in RI--I just switched to this one from the other clinic. The other re was pretty much try 3 times only and move on. I can't travel out of state because it's difficult for my husband to get time off at the last minute. He's a lawyer, so lots of times he has stuff scheduled that he can't get out of the last minute.

I am looking into other options just in case though....

That's good to know.

Hi all...
I would like to share my story with you.....I started this whole process about 2 years ago...Went to one clinic and FSh was 8.2 and 10.2 a month later. One time they took my FSH and it was 18...They said there was NO way I would get pregnant. They tried one round of IUI and failed...So basically they told me there was nothing they could do. I would not get pregnant. I did not take no for an answer and moved to another clinic. I started IVF as he was not concerned at all with FSh levels...He was confident I would and could get pregnant. We got 16 eggs 11 fertilized and we tried the fresh cycle. We put in 2 and nothing. That next month we tried again with our remainging frozen ones....I am now 2 weeks from delivering a baby boy. I am doing an elective c-section on Oct 8th. I am very excited. So PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep trying...Go to another clinic something. Do not give up....It can and will happpen. We still have some in the freezer for another FET.
Best of Luck to all of you.........There is success out there ..I am proof.

Kbat-

My hubby is also a lawyer with a hectic schedule. Thankfully we live in Los Angeles and have MANY options. But due to traffic pattens it was still dificult in 2003 for him to make appts and the center I found was 45min- 2 hrs away (depending on traffic). Here is how we handled it: We froze his sperm and used the frozen sample. He only came to the first appt and I did the rest on my own! I probably looked like a single woman trying to get preggo as everyone else there was a couple, but it had to be done.

Of course it was a HUGE inconvenience for me, since as you know you make almost daily trips for U/S, bloodwork, etc PLUS I was driving in a complete other direction to the bank where we stored his frozen sample--which I then had to deliver to the clinic where I was being treated. I was working full time at the time and had to take a leave of absence from my job for this.

This time we were lucky enough to find a great center nearby. Not sure if your situation will allow for this madness, but it is food for thought. I do think you should be with an RE who you trust and feel comfortable with. Good luck!!!

rotobay--
I know how that LA traffic can be--crazy-- lived outside LA near Pasadena, and my dad still lives out there... I wouldn't necessarily mind going to Boston area, especially if I could do bloodwork and u/s here and have the results faxed. But, so far my husband seems to think the re knows what she is doing seems to thinkg that if it's not meant to be then it's ok w/ him. Also doesn't want to take any action until we know the results of the tests, which I can't say that I blame him. Just feel like things are slipping through my fingers and can't do anything about it. Just not willing to let go quite yet. My issue is usually what to do after the egg retrieval & finding someone who could drive me home. They don't allow you to drive afterwards. Even when I was at the 1st clinic, and once we thought my husband couldn't stay long enough to drive me home, we were just going to pay for a car service to take me home and I thought they were going to have a heart attack--they really didn't like the idea. Pretty much the way we do things is I do about 95% on my own--my husband pretty much shows up for the egg retreival part.

skidoo--THAT'S SUCH A GREAT STORY. CONGRATULATIONS!!!! It's great to hear about these stories....
