Anyone taking metformin or stopped since preggers?

Post by yarnista »

Just wanted to see if anyone here has taken metformin (for PCOS) during pregnancy or what your opinions about it are. My RE had me take it for the first trimester then when I went to my first OB appt. she had me stop it. A week later I landed in the ER with a lot of bleeding and a scare of miscarriage. I also lost 1 twin about 2 weeks earlier.
I'm doing much better now. I have been thinking alot about it and just wondering if the two might relate. From what I've researched on the internet the small studies that have been done have shown it decreases the rates of miscarriage and has not been show to harm the baby. I just want to be sure I'm doing all that I can to give this baby a good chance. Also when I stopped the metformin I was craving sugar like crazy.( so I have stashed the Halloween candy far away from my reach)
I'm going to bring it up with the OB tomorrow and kind of hope she would let me take it again.

Yarnista,

I am so sorry you lost one of your twins. I am on Metformin for PCOS (1500 mg a day)and I was told by my ER to stop taking it at 12 weeks. I think it is pretty standard to take it until the the end of the 1st trimester but it sounds like most Docs recommend stopping after that. I am scared to go off of it. What dose were you on? Did you taper off? Hopefully your sugar cravings will slow down...but some of that could be the baby : ) A couple of studies show that staying on Metformin decreases the chances of gestational diabetes but they are still researching the effects on the baby. Have you ever tried a low GI diet? It is great for PCOS. Good luck. Keep me posted on what your Dr says.

Take care,

Michelle

No she didn't tell me to taper off of it and I was taking 4 tablets a day of the XR. I was on a great diet by my naturopathic doc before the IVF cycle and lost 25lbs. I got off track a wee bit because my mother was here cooking for me and making desserts but now am getting back on track. I'm having a protein shake this morning!
Thanks for the advice. I'm planning on talking to the ob doc today about it all.

I was back to see the ob doctor today and she told me that she doesn't think that stopping the metformin caused any problems. I kind of still wonder about it a wee bit though. She told me I could stay home another 2 weeks and then see how I'm doing so I'm happy about that. My job can be very stressful sometimes so that was a big relief.

I was on Metformin also just once a day I believe. I weaned off of it but it wasn't until my 2nd trimester, I can't remember the week. Geez it seems like so long ago! But my fertility Dr. told me how long to take everything and my OB didn't object one bit. He said all those meds helped me to get pregnant, none were going to hurt the baby so he didn't want to argue with the man who got me prego! So I am still following his orders...only thing I am left taking that IVF Dr. prescribed is Heparin shots and baby aspirin.
It is hard to go back and examine all the "what if's", it will probably drive you crazy!
Hang in there, hope everything continues to go good from here on out.
