My 1st IVF cycle might be cancelled....

Post by boo1 »

I'm so upset. I have 2 folllicles that are trying to dominate the others. The doctor wants me to keep the meds going for the next two night, and check again Thursday. If I don't have several more nearly the same size, we're going to cancel this IVF and do an IUI Saturday. I know the stats on IUIs and they're not great.

It was hard to go to work this morning, I cried all the way here. There is still some hope that I have some follies that can catch up, but I'm worrying.

Anyone else been in my position and been able to do IVF after all? At my age, the doc doesn't want to go to surgery with 2.

Thanks,
laura

Hi boo1. I wish I had a positive success story for you, but i can tell you that I know how you feel. I had the same situation, and endend up with a cancelled cycle. We went through with the IUI but got a BFN. However, everyone is different. Your body could turn around and you could respond better by your next visit. If not, maybe the IUI will do the trick. I have had two cancelled cycles and I know the heartbreak that comes from it.
My best advice is to try to stay positive and as less stressed as possible (i know this is a hard task). I am convinced that stress made my situation worse. Keep a positive point of view; at least with an IUI you have hope. Hope is the best thing we IVF patients have to hold on to.
Keep the faith,

Hi boo 1. I just finished my first round of IVF. Sadly, it was a BFN, but I too was a poor responder and still managed to get through the cycle. My first u/s showed only 2 tiny follies. 2 days later, I still only had 2 measurable, but both were under 10 mm. By the 3rd u/s, my doctor asked me if I wanted to continue, because I had one dominating at 10mm and the other 3 still not measurable. I did not quit and he never gave up on me. I ended up stimming for 15 days before we scheduled the retrieval. On my last u/s, I had 1 measuring 18mm, 1 at 14mm, and a few others, all less than 10. There wasn't much hope to get more than 1 egg, but at ER they ended up getting 5. Only 1 was mature, but they waited a day to fertilize the others and 3 ended up growing enough to be transferred. It was an incredibly sad and frustrating time, and hats off to my doc for not quitting on me. I think it had a lot to do with the fact that I kept pushing and saying I didn't want to quit. I feel quite lucky that my doc stuck by me, because I have heard of many clinics that won't do ERs without at least 3 or 4 mature follies. I don't know what the point of my story is, other than to reassure you that things can change overnight, so don't give up hope yet. But, I have also accepted that everything happens for a reason and for whatever reason, my first cycle just wasn't my time. I have an appointment today to learn our next steps. But what I do know, and you've probably heard this before, is that whether or not your cycle continues, they learn SO much about you in a failed cycle. I look at my first cycle as a practice run, and now the doc knows what he needs to do to make things better on the next try. Hang in there and try to keep the faith. I'm praying for your follies to grow!

Tonight will be Day 10 of stimming. I have about 12 follicles or so, but two are much larger than the others and the doctor doesn't think it's a good idea to do surgery with just two at my age because he thinks the chances are too low. I pray that a few others will catch up by Thursday morning.

I'm trying to be positive, I had my crying spell. At the very least, he assured me that he knew a LOT more about how I respond to the meds and can adjust accordingly for the next cycle if it comes to that.

I'm trying to leave it in God's hands and not let it dominate my every though. Of course, it is anyway.

Thanks for the kind words. Any other input is appreciated!

I know how you feel. I was a poor responder to. after stim for 12days i only had 1-2 good looking follies and several small ones. The doc did not want to waste the good one was i was scheduled for ER. But guess what on the day i went in it was a different doc on call since it was a weekend. After reading my case she did not feel comfy with only one follie so wanted to cancel. I was so upset. hubby did not want to hear that either so we were given a choice of iui or cancel and after looking at how much we have poured down the drain(self pay with 3failes cycles already) my hubby said lets give iui a try. On my schedules test day it was BFN. so upset and gave up hope. well started having so much pain and thought i had cysts. so i made an appointment for that and also since AF had not arrive. well yesterday when i went for my appt guess what they did more blood work and my beta was 127.1. So my point is just coz you are a poor responder dont give up. use all options you have.
hope this helps.

boo1,
Hello, keep the faith, how well do I know about poor response...My last cycle was cancelled b/c I had about 4 follies at stim day 8. I was dx with DOR, against the dr. wishes DH and I decided to do another cycle, prayed and God gave us more than enough, we had 28 eggs. Keep the faith, and remember God's delay is not his denial. How do you go from DOR to producing 28 eggs....sounds like God to me. If he did it for me, he will do it for you. They told me the same thing to...

Hey! I went back to the RE and I have what appears to be enough mature follicles to proceed. I've been praying so much! I'm on more injectables tonight and maybe tomorrow night to see if we can't grow a few more biggies. But it appears to be a go at this point. I'm grateful to have the opportunity to continue, but I DO know that it is God's will.

I'm hanging in there!

Thanks for your kind words.

Prayers and sticky baby dust to everyone,

Thanks tennisgurl! :) I pray that you get your BFP!

Tonight will the the 12th day of stimming and I'm going back to the RE tomorrow morning to see if we want to do additional stimming or go ahead and go for it.
You had FOUR follies and ended up with 11 eggs? (If I read that correctly). I had four big ones this morning and hopefully more are still growing. Wow! I hope I'm so lucky!!! That gives me a LOT of hope!!!!

I'm having surgery Sunday for egg retrieval. Prayers will be greatly appreciated, as will good vibes and positive thoughts.

Wish me luck!

It's in God's hands, but I believe in the power of prayer, so the more the merrier!

Wishing everyone here a BFP soon, lots of prayers, hugs, and sticky baby dust,
Laura :)
