Embryo Transfer vs. Blastocyst Transfer

Post by rhonda112 »

Hello all...i am new to this but I am near the end of my third IVF cycle. We had the egg retrieval yesterday and depending on the number of quality embroy's tomorrow we may be able to have a 5-day blastocyst transfer. My question is...does anyone know what the benefit or difference is between the embroys transfer and blastocyst transfer? My doctor has wanted us to do the 5-day transfer since the first cycle. Unfortunatley our first two attempts failed and I wonder if the blastocyst might make the difference this time around. My doctor said that there is no real benefit but then why is he pushing the 5-day transfer so much. Is there more of a benefit?

Sorry if, i ramble on or if this doesnt make sense but I'm hopeing someone knows something I dont.

Thanks!
Rhonda

From what I understand there is no benefit to the embryo, but the benefit is that the embies that do make it to day 5 will be stronger and more likely to take inside the uterus. So the benefit perhaps is in not miscarriaging. Does that make sense? My new RE is going to do a day 5 transfer too.

rhonda112 - someone on the boards a while back posted this website and I found it to be very interesting, and it definitely helped me understand 3 day vs. 5 day transfers. Not sure that it will answer the question "which is better", but it certainly gives some good insight as to the differences. I did a 3 day transfer on my first IVF...I am going to ask for a 5 day on the next one. :)
