HCG injection during pregnancy, is it necessary?

Post by BBdusts »

Hi, I just went for my first blood test and its BFP with level of 138. The next step of the treatment, my RE required me to inject HCG (pregnyl 2,500I.U) twice a week. What is the purpose of the HCG injection? Do I need that to support my pregnancy?

I have no idea why any additional hCG would be of any value. You already have more than enough to sustain the corpus luteum (or corpra lutea).

I've never heard of this practice.

When I became pregnant with my son almost 15 years ago I found out at 4w 5d. At 5w I started bleeding lightly. The remedy was a good shot of HCG even though my Beta "seemed" high enough. I had always had a history of short cycles (23 days) so my OB assumed LPD. Anyway, I was then put on progesterone suppositories until week 15. My son was born 8lbs 10oz. THIS time around my Betas were very high (twins) but again my OB put me on prometrium as I was being weaned off the PIO shots at 11 weeks. Now I have read that progesterone can help stave off PTL. I believe it since I had a conical biopsy in 1996 and my cervix is holding at just over 40mm (nice and long) even with carrying really low and all the pressure.

What I am saying is that I think it can only help. Maybe the RE is using the HCG shots instead of extra progesterone because the RE just wants to boost you. In any event - congratulations and may you look forward to an exciting and healthy 8 more months!!!

HCG injections to prevent threatened miscarriages

Post by yan »

In China it is standard practice to inject HCG during pregnancy in cases where there has been early bleeding or other threatened miscarriage. However there was a study done I think in the UK, which compared placebo HCG injections and genuine HCG injections and the result was inconclusive. Where did you get the HCG injections, as I would like to get some for some reassurance following early bleeding, but have searched high and low on the internet and there is no mension of this as a treatment.
