My new re just started me on metformin. I'm currently taking 500mg a day, but will increase to 1500mg over the next couple of weeks. I have PCOS, but I'm not insulin resistant. WHat can I expect? I'm thinking it's going to make me sick with GI issues, but so far I feel okay. Can you drink alcohol on it? We are going to a big party Saturday night and I am worried about drinking wine. I heard you can not take it that day or the day before and it would be okay to drink. Has anyone ever done this?
Most importantly, did it help you with getting pregnant? I seem to have implantation issues and thought metformin might help. Any success stories out there using metformin? I'll do metformin and clomid next cycle and then an iui. I'm hoping metformin will be my miracle drug!!
Any info you can give me would be so appreciated! Thank you!

I took metformin on my 1st and 2nd IVF after my first RE gave me the insulin test. The one my RE prescribed made me nauseated, I had some food aversions and didn't feel well. When I went to my primary care doctor for a checkup I told them about it and they put me on the kind that is extended release so I didn't get so sick. It didn't help me get pregnant though. The year after I started it I started exercising and when my primary care tested me for insulin resistance, my levels were good and I no longer had to take it. If I recall correctly - I don't think you're supposed to drink alcohol on it. My pharmacy puts a sticker on the vial if you're supposed to avoid alcohol. Maybe your local pharmacist can help?

I know this is kind of a late response but I just wanted to add this for people looking back over posts!
I have been on Metformin for over a year now (Prescribed by family doctor though). I had actually asked my doctor if I should continue to take it during my IVF treatment and he made the comment that it would help me get pregnant but he left it at that..so I'm not sure in what way it helps. I can tell you though when I first started taking it I had an upset stomach quite a bit. I learned that eating sugary foods while taking Metformin can cause a lot of stomach upset also loose stool. Sorry if TMI lol.
I also wanted to add I'm looking at my bottle right now and the labels say 1. Take with food 2. Do not take alcoholic beverages when taking this medication & 3. Obtain medical advice before taking nonprescription drugs some may affect the action of this medication
I can't remember drinking while on Metformin so if there are side effects I'm can't say! But I'm sure the warning is there for a good reason.
Sorry - I'm posting late too, but I thought I'd throw my $0.02 also.
I've been on metformin for 3 years now for insulin resistance and PCOS. My RE upped my dose to 2000mg, and we're pregnant from our first IVF cycle. I've never been pregnant before though, so I'm not sure if it helped or not.
I've had very few GI issues with it, and I'm not a big drinker, but with the few drinks that I have had, I haven't noticed any issues.
Good luck on your journey!
